Not to want to wash my hair over a sink with a bloody sieve?!

Ok first world problems, but DH, DS, DD and I are staying with my elderly aunt and uncle. They have a massive house with modern bathrooms but DA had just told me that I cannot wash my shoulder length hair in the shower as it will block the drains, “But it’s ok as you can wash it over the sink and catch all the hair in a sieve”! FFS!!!

If I try to do this the water will go everywhere (the basin is tiny), the shampoo and conditioner will go in my eyes if I bend forward, and if I try to kneel backwards it will give me severe neck pain (and water everywhere again).

I normally wash my hair every three days which should have been last night, and we don’t go home until tomorrow. And we’re in the middle of nowhere without a car, though I’m going to have to insist on a diversion on our day trip to buy some dry shampoo.

I’m really annoyed she didn’t tell me this before hand as at least I could have washed my hair just before coming. And what about my 11 year old who has really long thick hair? Mercifully she’s not due to wash hair until tomorrow, but if it had needed washing sooner we’d be stuffed.

😩

I would wash it in the shower. How can one or two hair washes possibly block a drain unless you are shaving your head in there. Old people (I am one myself) get fixations sometimes and you will not change them. I would be stuffed as I wash my hair everyday. My hairdresser has a lady who only washes her hair every couple of months. Yuk

Tbf I have long thick hair and the drain cover is completely blocked with a fistful of hair after I wash it. If I let it go down the drain it would definitely have an impact.

I would either improvise a drain cover for the shower, or ask if they have a trug to fill with deep water and use that instead of the sink.

Because the day before I was up until midnight ironing and packing, then I had to take my son for a hospital appointment in London the morning we travelled up here, then I went into the office in the afternoon, then straight to the station for a 6:30pm train 🤷‍♀️

But mainly because it never occurred to me that I wouldn’t be able to wash my hair here - if I’d known this I’d have washed it at midnight the night before!

I'd ditch the ironing

thenightsky · 01/08/2026 18:56

You could maybe wash your hair over the side of the bath and into that big bucket? Use a jug to tip it over your head, filling from the bath tap beside you. I've done this before and it works.

Sweetdreamsbeautifulnightmare · 01/08/2026 19:12

Erm just do it anyway!

maxslice · 01/08/2026 21:17

Wash your hair in the shower anyway and remove any hairs in the drain. One shampoo is not going to block the plumbing. Just don’t tell her.

CMMM · 01/08/2026 21:23

i lose alot of hair when I wash it because it's curly and doesn't shed daily with hair brushing. i carry a silicone drain protector and use to catch the hair. simple solution

MagicThanks · 01/08/2026 21:24

Just say ok and then wash your hair in the shower like normal. How will they ever know.

mumumental · 01/08/2026 22:11

I don’t think you should flout their rules and risk upsetting them. It’s not such a big deal.

why is saving water being tight?

It’s not. You’ve not met my mum ,she’s like this on all topics. If anything is probably more than £1 she will have to consider if it’s worth that.

so water gets saved and as a child rarely allowed to wash, food gets bought reduced and as a child there wasn’t enough most of the time, as a child I had to wear clothes probably two sizes too small all bought second hand or given to us.

she doesn’t have the internet never has or a mobile phone. I live away now and the only way I have to contact her is on her landline or write a letter. some people of the older post war era are like this.

My mum only allowed me to wash my hair once a fortnight. Seriously embarrassing when I was 13 and at secondary school with grease down to my shoulders. Sad

BauhausOfEliott · 01/08/2026 23:12

Presumably she isn’t going to stand in the bathroom and supervise you when you have your shower. Just wash it anyway. It’s not going to block the drain and she’s not going to know.

Yetone · 02/08/2026 00:40

OP, when asked just say that you don’t want to go next year. If pushed tell them it is because you don’t like washing your hair with a sieve or showering in a bucket.

Brucebogtrotter257 · 02/08/2026 03:55

Very odd, just wash as normal they'll never know. I also wouldn't want to stand in dirty water while showering. I'd ditch the bucket also and just partially fill it after the shower to make it look like you used it. Just a little bit of soap.

FFSItsTooHot · 02/08/2026 04:59

I would just wash my hair in the shower as normal, making sure that there's no hair in the plug hole afterwards. They're not going to be standing over you in the bathroom,so how will they know otherwise?

CatsnCoffee · 02/08/2026 05:06

Some older people won’t use showers to wash their hair. My DA is a very youthful 84, still runs her own business, very independent with a very busy social life. She has 2 showers in her house and showers daily, but on the evenings she washes her hair, she does that over the sink! She says she can’t wash her hair in the shower!
Any older Mumsnetters who can explain the fear/distrust/insecurity about hairwashing in the shower?

“OP, I've loved this whole thread. I hope that the relatives are good company or that you're in for a good inheritance out of this.”

Ha, thanks - I’m glad some good has come of it! But in answer to your questions - they’re ok company (but annoying in ways other than this), and my inheritance is small as their will leaves pretty much everything to charity, which is their prerogative. Hey ho!

What family isn't annoying, we don't love them for that they'll leave us in their wills, what a sad way to look at a relationship.

TheVeryAngryBanana · 02/08/2026 07:45

We're a bit tree-huggery and do the bucket thing, but I'd never inflict it on guests! That's madness. The garden doesn't care about a bit of hair either

IFancyABaconSarnie · 02/08/2026 07:54

I take it that your DA won’t be watching you have a shower. So take her rules with a pinch of salt and wash your hair as you normally would. Be sure to scoop out your strands of hair from the plug hole.

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 02/08/2026 10:25

Idstillratherbepaddleboarding · 01/08/2026 08:49

Well it is bizarre but I’m pretty sure neither you or your DD will suffer from not washing your hair for an extra day so I’d just tie it up and wait til you get home.

Quite!

They are rich, and have no mobility problems (they go on long walking holidays). But I get that the traps on the bath and shower are inaccessible.
I don’t understand why sink unblockers don’t work for them when they seem to work for everyone else.

Also, they must have lived in this house for 40 years, and this is the first time they’ve implemented these rules. I don’t get it as they had the bathrooms redone in the last 10 years but presumably this drain issue has only happened since then or they’d have tackled it as part of the bathroom works.

Sink unblockers don't work for me, never have. Even the commercial ones from a specialist supplier. I've just learned to live with slow draining water

CalmTheFuckDownMargaret · 02/08/2026 10:49

This reminds me of Japanese horror films like Ring where supernatural ladies with long black hair clog up plug holes in terrifying ways. Perhaps they’ve been watching too much stuff like this.

Mymindblown · 02/08/2026 11:21

Am I the only one who now desperately needs an update to hair wash gate? OP what did you do did you flout their rules? Did you manage to use the bucket without giving yourself concussion?

omghereistrouble · 02/08/2026 12:04

Don't some people have some daft ideas!

Bababear987 · 02/08/2026 12:43

Cant believe the amount of people telling you to just put up with greasy hair, i hate that feeling its so uncomfortable.

OP just wash it like a normal person. Tell them you probably wont be back next summer- say youve no holidays from work, tell them the kids have summer camps, or tell them the truth that you cant really abide by their rules as it makes you uncomfortable.

anon666 · 02/08/2026 12:47

Hahaha, dh showed me the grim hair/fluff residue in our shower and he's right, it's grim.

Whilst this is a savage workaround, I'd be tempted to comply if it's a short visit. Not sure I'd love doing hair over a sieve though. I'd probably go to the gym or local swimming pool.

For a longer stay, look into solutions - you can but very cheap hair catchers for plugs on amazon. We've got one. Once id seen how much hair, lint and stuff it caught, I would not be without one.
