Not to want to wash my hair over a sink with a bloody sieve?!

To put you out of your misery: I washed my hair in the shower last night using the sodding bucket system (with a wet tea towel underneath to prevent bucket slippage, as DA didn’t have a bath mat). Still infinitely better for me than trying to do it over the sink.

I don’t understand how/why it’s not occurred to DA and DU that with the buckets there’s no need for the sink/sieve directive as no water, and therefore no hair, would be going down the plug hole.

On the plus side, they have lovely soft water so it left my hair much nicer than when I wash it at home :-) though this still doesn’t make up for Bucketgate.

I’m too conflict-averse to tell DA we won’t be visiting again, particularly as there’s no easy or cheap way to see them if we don’t go up to stay. They probably have a limited number of years’ hosting left in them anyway, though if the batshittery escalates much beyond this I will have to draw a line.

Genuine question, not pretending l know the answer. Doesn’t calcium build up from hard water cause a similar problem?

Ah, that might shed some light on why their plug holes get blocked easily. We have very soft water where I live. Soft water doesn't dissolve/wash away soap, shampoo, shower gel anywhere near as effectively as hard water and soap scum etc can build up really quickly, and hair gets trapped in that.

However, it's incredibly easily remedied by just poking a bendy plug hole brush down the plug hole and wiggling it about a bit as soon as the water starts draining slowly. A bit of white vinegar down the plug hole now and again also shifts it. Bleach doesn't really work as well, I think because it's alkaline rather than acidic, perhaps.

Still, regardless of all that, these people are still bonkers.

But the OP doesn’t wash that part of her body every day and according to this thread, that’s normal.

That baffles me tbh. So many people on MN claim to only shower and wash their hair every few days.

I mean, good for you, but I am still utterly baffled by how not only batshit crazy this scenario is but also that some people don't see any / too much of an issue with it. It's weird to think I'm walking around a supermarket with people who think just not washing a part of the body, when it's dirty, is A-OK.

It's a shower, for Christ's sake, it's meant for washing in!

I wash mine every second day, maybe more in summer if I'm exercising a lot - if I don't, I get a sore, itchy scalp and it takes weeks to get it back under control. I'd also feel dirty and self-conscious. It's too much of an ask from a guest imo.

I cannot go a day without washing mine. If I left it 2 days, it would be slick with grease.

Washing hair (with whatever regularity is required) is basic hygiene. No one should be deprived of that.

And it's hardly difficult to clean the plug hole / shove some drain unblocker down it (£3 a bottle, you only need half, and it dissolved everything in its way).

DA is crazy.

Well it is bizarre but I’m pretty sure neither you or your DD will suffer from not washing your hair for an extra day so I’d just tie it up and wait til you get home.

Ok first world problems, but DH, DS, DD and I are staying with my elderly aunt and uncle. They have a massive house with modern bathrooms but DA had just told me that I cannot wash my shoulder length hair in the shower as it will block the drains, “But it’s ok as you can wash it over the sink and catch all the hair in a sieve”! FFS!!!

If I try to do this the water will go everywhere (the basin is tiny), the shampoo and conditioner will go in my eyes if I bend forward, and if I try to kneel backwards it will give me severe neck pain (and water everywhere again).

I normally wash my hair every three days which should have been last night, and we don’t go home until tomorrow. And we’re in the middle of nowhere without a car, though I’m going to have to insist on a diversion on our day trip to buy some dry shampoo.

I’m really annoyed she didn’t tell me this before hand as at least I could have washed my hair just before coming. And what about my 11 year old who has really long thick hair? Mercifully she’s not due to wash hair until tomorrow, but if it had needed washing sooner we’d be stuffed.
