AIBU to be deeply concerned about the recent influx of 30k+ undocumented arrivals in Spain?

AIBU to feel really unsettled by the recent news coming out of Spain and Ceuta? Reports are showing that tens of thousands of undocumented migrants have crossed over in such a short window, completely overwhelming local infrastructure, reception centers, and security forces.

I know migration is always a sensitive and compassionate topic, but looking at these numbers practically, I don't see how any European border region can absorb 30,000 to 50,000 arrivals almost overnight without severe strain on public resources, local housing, and emergency services.

What worries me even more is the precedent it sets for the rest of Europe and the UK down the line. Surely there has to be a firm balance between humanitarian support and actual, enforceable border control?

Am I being completely unreasonable to view this as a serious policy and security crisis, or are others feeling equally concerned about where this leads?

Would love to hear honest thoughts on how this should actually be handled!

Not BU to be concerned.

Britain and other European countries should work together to protect the wider border (both physically/militarily and through the legal system). I disagree with the opinion that each individual country should deal with it themselves and should try to "share around" asylum seekers so "all countries take their fair share". Although I think Spain has brought this on themselves with some unforced errors that I hope other countries don't repeat.

Wasn't there a court judgment that's prompted this ? Somerhing in technicalities that people who arrive by sea can't be returned ?

They don't have to, if the French give them dingies and life-jackets

And how do they get to France?

randomchap · 31/07/2026 14:30

@ChirpyUmberBiscuit

Are you wanting to discuss this? You've gone quite quiet

Not many are going to swim the Channel.

So, OP. Didn't you get enough of a frothing reaction to yesterday's thread? There's not enough going on the UK so you pearl clutch on the behalf of the Spanish.

It's Spain's problem to deal with before these people get anywhere remotely near the UK.

ColdAsAWitches · 31/07/2026 14:27

OP, are you going to post that nearly half of them have already returned to Morocco, within 24 hours of arriving in Ceuta? Or does this inconvenient fact not allay your deep concern in any way?

Eyesopenwideawake · 31/07/2026 14:25

the majority going to come to our country because we give them such a free ride.

Don't be so ridiculous. Most of them will be back home by the end of the weekend.

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 31/07/2026 14:24

They are being sent back. I live in Spain. The vast majority of them will be returned to Morocco.

@Thisthreadhasbeendeleted ,

Regardless of the OP, why is it considered to be a bad thing to discuss what is front page news in both the UK and Europe?

It is a (mainly left wing) tactic to attack the discussing of something rather than discussing the thing itself.

This is headline news in both the UK and across Europe. It is both the first and second article in El Pais.

We have to be able to discuss this kind of issue without ad hominem attacks.

Fine to discuss it. And yes, I agree, it warrants discussion.

However, frothing at the mouth about fictional risks and outright lies is not a discussion. It's propaganda designed to encourage fear and hatred.

No doubt about that, however, I have doubts about just how genuine the OP is.
If they want to discuss the issue & convince others they're here for genuine discourse & debate, they need to work on their delivery.
What I wrote in my post wasn't use of any 'tactic', I was expressing doubt about the OP's intentions in starting the thread (topic irrelevant).

@Popstarrrrr ,

‘Colonisation tends to have longer term impacts as everyone is now realising’

That is such a deflection!

I’m assuming the people who swam/rafted to Ceuta had no interest in the colonisation of Ceuta, they wanted to get to the EU.

I am also assuming that they will apply for asylum. Otherwise why do the swim which is actually quite hazardous?

You would hardly swim there, say you were an economic migrant, and be forced to immediately turn around.

Even if they do apply for asylum, Moroccans have very, very little chance of getting it in spain.

Is this a repost? I swear the other one has literally the same title?

No, the other one was simply "worried". This one is "deeply concerned".

Thisthreadhasbeendeleted · 31/07/2026 14:14

This is so faux-pearl-clutchy it's impossible to hide how goady & shit-stirring it is.

@ChirpyUmberBiscuit you're fooling no-one.

It’s now documented to be about 49,000 and it is absolute fuck up for the UK as they are in the majority going to come to our country because we give them such a free ride. I Stress I don’t mind genuine asylum seekers, but these are economic immigrants and we are fucked. We need to cease almost all foreign aid because our country is going to the toilet.

Maybe have a look at a map. They’re really no nearer the uk than they were before they arrived in Ceuta.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 31/07/2026 13:50

Ceuta is looking unsustainable. I feel for the usual residents, it must have felt very frightening.

randomchap · 31/07/2026 13:49

@ChirpyUmberBiscuit

Did you genuinely believe it was mainland Spain and not a small enclave in Africa? Did you really think they swam across the med?

Or did you decide to leave out that detail to make it seem like it was mainland Spain.

What I'm asking is are you dumb enough to think they all swam across the med, or dishonest and wanting to push a false narrative?

Popstarrrrr · 31/07/2026 13:47

What's causing you to feel unsettled exactly? It doesn't really set a precedent for the rest of Europe given this is Spain occupying territory it failed to return to Morocco after independence. Colonisation tends to have longer term impacts as everyone is now realising.

AnnPerkins · 31/07/2026 13:41

sickflight87 · 31/07/2026 13:33

Absolutely this

They're not, they are stuck in Ceuta. They are reported to mostly be going back as the PP described above.

What a lot of nonsense.

Immigrants/asylum seeking do do get a 'free ride' in this country.

Stop believing right wing politicians and right wing media propaganda.

Also immigrants from Morocco are more likely to want to settle in France because the history between the two countries means they are likely to speak the language and have relatives living there and can find a strong Maghreban community established already.
