To ask what scares you /freaks you out that you would not consider common? Mine is a children’s book!

Earth star fungus.

I found some of these (didn't know what they were at the time) in a flower bed in the garden a couple of years ago. They frightened the bejasus out of me.

I'm sorry - I can't link, but google them. I found them disturbing and disgusting and freaked out (although my biologist friend told me off for being so dramatic). It's not just the bizarre appearance - the texture is ...ugh...like detached wobbly breasts with nipples, growing out of the ground. They looked sinister and gross to me. The ones in my garden were the size of a human female breast too. Horrible, horrible.

I hope they don't come back.

That has traumatized me! Wish I had not googled them! 🙈

I hate seeing tiny ducklings, I think it's because I saw a few instances of bad things happening to them when I was really young. I saw one get eaten by a fish, some getting hit by a car and one fall down a drain. They make me feel so anxious I have to walk away and not look at them.

I don't mind the older ducklings that are pretty much like mini adults, they don't seem so vulnerable.

Pipes. Not the Scottish instrument, but plumbing. If I go in a restaurant or public toilet and there’s a wall panel missing and you can see all the pipes I really don’t like it.

The chimpanzee called oliver who some people thought might be part human (it has been confirmed by dna he is not). I watched a documentary on him when I was younger and I couldnt sleep for weeks.

Also children who grew up as dogs. So disturbing. I cant even think about it.

Oh I think my son had that one. It did have a happy ending but I don't think it was one we revisited. Agree, far too sad for a children's book.

The one I am thinking of wasn't the Snow Kitten, it was a little black one in the book.

Clusters bother me more than holes, but both are just 😰

Oh yes..the corridor of heads. Absolutely terrifying. Also the institution she was locked up in.

Hi, i belive what you have is Bibliophobia, usually stems from a stress or fear from childhood reading material.

Does it remind you of human flesh? I struggle with ham because of it. Oddly only ham for me, I’m fine with steak and other chunks of meat.

Pylons dont bother me but they are quite WOTW-ish. I don't like it! 🤣

Which reminds me - I hated War of The Worlds. My Dad used to put it on in the car and I can't stand the music even as an adult.

Oh my gosh I just remembered another hate of mine - lugworm casts on beaches! That horrible squiggly mound where a worm has been, makes me physically gag. I don’t like worms in general to be honest (nor snakes) but that really makes me feel queasy and puts me off walking on the sand 🤢

I have a horror of oversized limbs, like massive hands. Kenny Everett used to do a sketch with a preacher with enormous pointy fingers - ugh makes me shudder and my hands then feel weird.

i also was scared of the vermicious kinds in Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator. The book I had made them look really slimy and disgusting.

Deep dark water - muffles a scream, just terrifying, something might grab my feet.

Fast flowing water- it makes me breathless. Also hold my breath crossing bridges as always convinced they will collapse - this can be problematic.
Also clowns and pylons.

and to follow up. In a random chat today, I found out our oldest son shares the same fear. They are not common where we live but during his recent work stint in Germany he met a few and is still horrified by them

I left one out! Robots. Any kind really, but mainly the 4 legged load carrying ones. I get the principal of them, they're able to carry loads over uneven ground, where a person or vehicle wouldn't be able to. But I find them disturbing to the point of having to look away if they appear on anything. And especially when they cover them in fur!
I was a bit unsettled when I first saw Robocop, back in the late 80s. The thought of encountering an ED209 in the street made my blood run cold. But back then I used to laugh, as I thought it would never happen. Obviously now, with technological advances, it could still become a reality!
I accidentally saw a video a while back of robots going berserk and watched in horror as they had total meltdowns. Had to turn off halfway through the second one! My hair was stood on end all over my body.
I swear, if the day comes when they are wandering the streets, I will never ever leave the house again!
I'm ok with the kind of robots that are used in car factories and such like, because that's machinery. But anything on legs, huge, human or animal like, just no!

I lived Hartley Hare. Even as a small child, I was very drawn to the camp side of things. I might even have had a small crush on him

This novel had exactly the same impact on me. I still have my copy and the sequel, "Marianne and Mark". Do you remember the TV series? I have a friend and we talk about those stones often! Terrifying. Thank heavens she drew a helicopter to save them!

A post here jogged my memory, my parents used to have the News of the World newspaper. I must have been about 10 yrs old & the pic on the front was a dog (maybe german shep) with a poodle's head grafted onto it's neck.. obviously at that age & no internet, no research done, but I feel sure it was from Russia..
