It was coming. You dont get good reality TV without people suffering.

This news however is awful. Bloody awful.

A groom dressed in a dark suit and a bride dressed in white walk hand in hand along a sunlit grassy path, surrounded by tall green trees. Bright sunlight filters through the leaves. A large green Channel 4 logo sits to the left.

Married at First Sight UK 'brides' say they were raped by onscreen husbands

Channel 4 was aware of one of the rape claims before broadcast, but the woman involved still featured in the show.

Yeah true

Will have to find something else to occupy my time now that reality tv is all but over 😭

Oh no, I'm so sorry those programmes aren't allowed to be manipulative and exploitative and unable to safeguard people on them from being raped and now you have nothing to watch because apparently your TV only shows shitty reality TV shows

Jesus Christ WTAF is wrong with you.

YooBlue · 18/05/2026 21:35

I am pretty sure that if I was an expert psychologist / therapist I would refuse to work on anything like MAFS on ethical grounds.

But then vets supervise abattoirs.

PleaseAccepyMyUserNames · 18/05/2026 21:27

It has really pissed me off, now I've watched the Panorama, that it has taken these ladies coming forward to start the wheels in motion.
My friend played me some catch up MAFS AUS once and I was genuinely horrified by

  • the blatant gaslighting of contestants
  • the aggression and violence
  • the vile misogyny that seemed to go unremarked and unchecked
  • the deliberate pairing of unsuitable couples
  • deliberate casting of seriously fucked up, disgusting individuals and the resultant abuse
  • the pandering to the 'experts' when they had a 'successful coupling' rate of <0.2% if my maths are correct (Seriously, those 'experts' are a bunch of self -serving souless you know whats).
And apparently this was all fine, just excellent TV,; it's just that now, 3 ladies are threatening C4 and CPL with lawyers and suddenly everyone sees the problem?!
Crispsandredwine · 18/05/2026 21:26

This show was always about shameful exploitation. I can’t believe anyone is surprised with the outcome.

This programme has changed totally from when it was first made. I remember watching the first couple of series probably 10-15 years ago and it was quite gentle, quite documentary style, lots about matching people up and the way they made their choices of pairings.

Then it seemed to morph into something a lot different, aimed at shocking, not interested in finding matches but finding conflict, stirring it up.

I remember this, it was almost more presented as seeing if the ‘experts’ got their pairings right. It was not about seeking fame and was more of a look to see if psychology and personality analysis could help find a life partner. I never watched it beyond the first series and I’m glad now!

Have you got them mixed up?

anyway back to original thread… just about to watch this. In some ways this is shocking and in others ways it was so obvious and I will admit to watching it and not realising that

No aha but i'm fine with noone agreeing on that one

I only watched the original UK format and a few Aus/US episodes.

I was always struck by how many women would say something along the lines of "well, we were intimate straight away, but we're married!".

There's no problem with being intimate straight away or waiting until marriage - but it struck me as odd that they were justifying it by saying that they were married so it was ok to do it.

Makes me wonder if that's a common line they were fed by producers.

Simply that Charlie was more liked and more in control of herself 🤷‍♀️.

Still i mean - none of them come off great!

What a ridiculous statement. C4 are not the arbiters of the validity of the allegations. Nor are the BBC. That’s the police’s job.

Of course.

Which is what C4 should have said. That the allegations must be investigated by the police and C4 will cooperate with the investigation.

Not emphasise that their position was that “allegations were wholly uncorroborated and disputed”.

Essentially sounding like a defence statement.

MillieTheMitten · 18/05/2026 21:02

I’ve not seen the UK MAFS, but given MAFS AUS is absolutely rife for abusive relationships so this comes as no surprise.

Helpfulhaddock · 18/05/2026 21:00

NotAnotherScarf · 18/05/2026 17:27

Not a bad thing. Big Brother was meant to be a one off social experiment. Then someone realises what they could do with it... Normal people for the first couple then complete arseholes who just wanted to get on TV to show how "wacky" they were.

Married at first sight....give me strength...I'm surprised the churches haven't risen up about the abuse of the sanctity of marriage

As for love island etc....complete choreographed.

I was thinking about this today. I think Big Brother set the scene for influencers etc.

People realised they could become rich and famous for showing their lives on screen, reality TV became popular, then the rise of social media meant you didn't need to win a "pick me" contest with Endemol or whoever, and viewers were already conditioned to watch "normal people"

Next thing you know we've got Mr Beast and Andrew Tate...

Imo they were both unhappy people but charlie manipulated the room better.

But i am alone in that, i accepted long ago 😄

So sad for these women.

For me it was the opposite

Eve wasn't good at manipulating the room and came off badly when she wasn't the bully

Are you saying Eve wasn’t a bully but Charlie was?

MrsSchadenfreude · 18/05/2026 20:47

MAFS was OK when they had normal people on it. When they were all fake tits, lips, hair extensions and Insta it was shite.

YooBlue · 18/05/2026 20:46

“Channel 4 had previously told Panorama that all the allegations were wholly uncorroborated and disputed.”

Shame on C4.

Gcn · 18/05/2026 20:45

And yet there's another thread on here about how at least they can watch the US version now (because obviously the rape and sexual assault could only take place on the UK version).

First time I'm honestly shocked and saddened by a group of anonymous posters

3678194b · 18/05/2026 20:44

Those poor women, what they have gone through sounds awful. I hope they get justice.

Yet over in the MafsUSA etc threads on this site, they are attacking anyone who says anything about these Mafs programs and franchises. Disgusting.

They are all the same format and same family, Channel 4 should remove all formats. Not continue to make money from airing them.

MaCheCazzo · 18/05/2026 20:42

I've never watched any of these shows and never would but what I most definitely would do, without hesitation, is judge someone who did.
If you just read the bare minimum about this stuff you'd surely know that without exception they are based on the use of mostly brainless women being exploited by disgusting men for the entertainment of witless gawpers.
I hope the whole bloody lot of them are cancelled and quickly. There's nothing wrong with reality tv but there's everything wrong with reality tv based on sex, women's looks and vulnerabilities and cock-happy men with not a braincell between them.

godmum56 · 18/05/2026 20:39

BauhausOfEliott · 18/05/2026 17:43

I mean, I think my first thought would be 'This is horrific, multiple women were raped and abused' rather than 'Oh no, what am I going to watch on telly now?'

This. I mean is anyone actually surprised?

Clemdfandango · 18/05/2026 20:34

The participants are strongly encouraged by the so-called 'experts' to have sex and if they don't it's considered that the 'marriage' is in trouble.

It's always bothered me that as the years have gone on, more and more emphasis has been put on their sex lives, regardless of how uncomfortable the participants felt. It actually used to give me the rage.

It was only a matter of time before something like this happened.

Disgusting.
