Non-binary colleague using disabled toilet

DefendingPan · 22/12/2024 10:14

Where I work there’s employee male and female toilets, customer male and female toilets and one customer disabled toilet.

This colleague is non-binary, is not disabled, and uses the disabled toilet/ baby change (with their own Radar key) because they “don’t feel comfortable) using either the male or female toilets.

I mentioned to my boss that I didn’t think this was appropriate and got accused of transphobia and threatened with discipline. I was made to feel like I was being offensive and discriminatory for bringing it up.

We have many elderly customers and many young families who all also need to use it.

Was I being unreasonable?

No not everyone CAN ‘wait a moment for the bathroom’. The reason non-disabled people aren’t supposed to used disabled toilets is so that they are generally more ready available for those who have disabilities.
I understand people wanting to be progressive and great for you. However, this can’t be at the cost of another protected characteristic.

Im the least progressive person i know.lol but this is a non issue. If a man with a dilly comes in the fillys bathroom then i will kick up a stink.lol

Use the toilet for the sex that they are. How is this confusing for you?

They are non binary. Whether you agree or not to that identification is irrelevant. They go to the gender neutral accessible toilet as that seems their best option. How weird people care.

CatLady476 · 22/12/2024 11:02

Oh FFS, leave them be... They aren't harming anyone (and before I get jumped on, I'm disabled).

Hoppinggreen · 22/12/2024 11:03

SapphireSeptember · 22/12/2024 11:00

Some people are confused about lots of things, that's still not a disability though.

It may be if its due to MH

FionaSkates · 22/12/2024 11:03

This person is just trying to go for a wee causing the least distress possible to the very critical world around them and you reported them to your manager?

@Hairyesterdaygonetoday It annoys me enough that the baby changing unit and the disabled toilet are often one and the same. (In my GP's it's the disabled loo, baby changing unit and the woman's loo all in one. 🤦🏻‍♀️) I have a baby, for clarification. Saying that disabled loos are 'gender neutral' so someone who's 'non-binary' and not disabled should be allowed to use it is stupid.

I agree. With a disabled parent and knowing the struggles they could have if they couldn't get to a toilet in a timely fashion, I hated having to use the disabled toilet to change a baby when I became a mother. If only it was just about a bit of frustration at having to wait.

I'd had a childhood of my parent finding the only accessible toilet (if there was one) being used as a store storecupboard and so on. Then things seemed to have been changing for the better for a while, but now I feel it's going backwards again.

Thehop · 22/12/2024 11:04

If they really think they have no sex then they are mentally ill and I'd have no issue with them using the disabled toilet.

My mum was in a wheelchair. We dealt with disability every day of her life. She was still ok with queuing for a piss.

I'm on crutches after a spinal cord injury and I have Crohn's disease - I can't wait for a toilet, so your point is? Not all disabilities are the same, you know.

Disabled/accessible toilets are the reason that I can leave my house and participate in life outside. I'm very grateful to have them.

EarthSight · 22/12/2024 11:04

You're not being unreasonable for questioning or objecting to this, and I think it's good if people are sticking up for people who are disabled, but you shouldn't have said anything to your manager. It just came across like you were trying to prevent them from doing something for your own satisfaction, rather that it coming from a genuine position of concern or care.

Sirzy · 22/12/2024 11:04

nellythe · 22/12/2024 11:00

Then what’s the point in radar keys? Yes, I know they’re available online. However the point is that they’re NOT free to use for all and sundry.

They are freely available. The system is so abused now it’s pointless. Anyone can go on Amazon and buy one

MonsieurBlobby · 22/12/2024 11:04

Unless they're spending hours in there I literally can't see the problem. If normal toilet use is causing a genuine problem for disabled customers then your workplace doesn't have enough facilities for everyone to use. The toilet is already multi-functional (accessible + baby change). Sounds like you're the one generating the attention OP, not your colleague.

DaringLion · 22/12/2024 11:05

Why are you poking your nose in who cares if they use the disabled loo

EarthSight · 22/12/2024 11:05

Thehop · 22/12/2024 11:04

Lol don't say this to your manager OP, or you'll get into trouble.

romdowa · 22/12/2024 11:06

Eyresandgraces · 22/12/2024 10:58

Your comment proves you don’t understand why disabled people need not only better but quicker access to a toilet.
if you’re not very mobile you’re much more likely to be incontinent. Walking strengthens the bladder muscles. This is why elderly people become incontinent because they don’t walk as far.
If you are immobile when you need the toilet you need it quickly in most cases.

But if there's another disabled person in the accessible toilet then a disabled person just has to wait. I've a disability and I've often come across another person in the loo. My need isn't greater than theirs and I just have to wait

EnidSpyton · 22/12/2024 11:06

Hairyesterdaygonetoday · 22/12/2024 10:58

I find this argument bizarre - that disabled toilets should always be kept unoccupied just incase a disabled person wants to use it, as they can't be expected to wait. Why ever not? The rest of us are expected to.

I hope to god this is a deliberate wind-up. Does any adult not understand that many disabilities cause bladder or bowel
weakness, or slowness and difficulty in getting onto the toilet?

Not a wind up at all.

Of course I understand this.

There are plenty of public places now where the only toilet available is an accessible toilet to save space.

Are you seriously suggesting that no one without a disability should therefore be able to use that public toilet? Or if there's a queue down the corridor in a public place for the ladies' loo, that no one should be using an accessible toilet to cut the queue down just in case someone with a disability shows up to use the accessible toilet?

Accessible toilets cannot be the exclusive preserve of people with disabilities, I'm afraid. It's just not practical given the shit provision of public loos in this country. This means sometimes, yes, people with disabilities might have to wait.

Thats what I said.
But obviously the intention was never for the bathrooms to be a free-for-all. I don’t know how so many people are trying to justify using bathrooms for those with disabilities.

I'm autistic and have had mental health issues in the past. Still wouldn't use a disabled loo unless it's one with a baby changing unit in it and I need to change my baby! So why do someone's gender feels trump someone's actual need to use a disabled loo?

Edit: I thought we weren't supposed to say gender feels were linked to mental health issues anymore anyway? Transphobe!

Soontobe60 · 22/12/2024 11:06

nonbinaryfinery · 22/12/2024 10:18

What would you have them do? Or is this just to stir the pot?

Use the toilet appropriate to their sex. Everyone who identifies as ‘non binary’ is either make or female.

Soontobe60 · 22/12/2024 11:08

Scabetty · 22/12/2024 11:02

Non binary isnt a sex. They are still male or female. Humans cannot identify out of their sex.

angrymenopausal · 22/12/2024 11:08

I them being in a single occupancy room where they will not encounter anyone of either gender but that has a picture of something on the door that distresses them, I'd say they have MH issue so using the disabled toilets is probably the best option for them.

It's madness. It's attention seeking and one day they'll look back on it and cringe. But just let them get on with it. Complaining about it just feeds into the ridiculousness.

WhimsicalGubbins76 · 22/12/2024 11:08

I’m not really sure why you feel this is any of your business? Why don’t you just focus on doing your job instead of trying to drag up something that’s long been settled by the general public.

Edenmum2 · 22/12/2024 11:09

OP you still haven't explained what your actual problem is and how it affects you

Sleepysleepycoffeecoffee · 22/12/2024 11:09

If all toilets are individual then why not just make them all for everyone, except the disabled one?

OurFlagMeansAfternoonTea · 22/12/2024 11:09

I'll be glad when this "non-binary" nonsense goes out of fashion. These people are ridiculous.
