this is a local company and this is their ‘Black Friday’ advert. WTF is it on about?!!! I’d hate to think the worst of them as they do lots of local events but…

To just NOT GET THIS?!

No it doesn’t from my quick read of it.

It’s not a race issue.

I didn’t check the methodology or potential biases but on the face of it, it looks like there is some evidence that white boys who claim free school meals are underperforming educationally when compared to all bar the Irish traveller community.

It isn’t a race issue because it’s just white boys (not white girls), it’s just white boys claiming free school meals (so not white boys who don’t claim free school meals).

So no, the disadvantage is certainly not to do with having white skin. It’s socio-economic disadvantage, rather than an innate visible difference that links in to historical othering, subjugation and oppression.

It is wrong, of course, and needs tackling, all children should have the same opportunity to reach their potential regardless, but it’s not a race issue.

If you think that being poor white trash doesn't have links to historical othering, subjugation and oppression then you need to look more deeply into working class history.
People are ignoring the intersectional nature of discrimination and oppression. Male privilege, for example. Until the 1970's women had no automatic right to open a bank account in their own name; black men could open bank accounts; white men could open bank accounts. A white woman's privilege means nothing when both she and her black sisters aren't allowed financial independence because of their sex.
There's no hierarchy of oppression with one form taking precedence over others, it's all shit.

@Dreamingofdreaming Do you know what an opinion is?

There is.
What's more, this isn't about white poor people.

I do which is why I won't be told to shut up for having one.

I agree with all of that. But a very visible difference that links to all of that is different. Unless you have lived in a body with brown skin you wouldn’t get it. I only have a little understanding from listening to my friend’s experiences.

Skin colour adds a level of privilege or disadvantage. We must keep fighting racism now more than ever. We can’t pretend it’s just the same as other forms of discrimination or disadvantage. It’s really not.

It really is. Try living in a visibly disabled body, especially where your intellectual disability is apparent. Historically you may have been institutionalised for life or just left to die; your may have your children removed at birth, that's if you're not forcibly sterilised; not educated; unemployable; pitied and infantilised; assaulted and spat on in the street for existing; aborted for having a cleft palate or Downs syndrome; called a liar, scrounger, sponger; left on planes and trains because you're invisible or people can't be bothered; I could go on.
Did you know an MP introduced a private members bill in 2021 to amend the Abortion Act? It was to restrict the timescales on abortions to exclude cleft lip, cleft palate and clubfoot as qualifying physical abnormalities for the purposes of medical termination of pregnancy under section 1(1)(d). Section 1(1)(d) permits full term abortions where there is disability. The bill didn't get anywhere.

user942557 · 28/11/2024 19:13

@Fgfgfg

It you're black and disabled then you're less privileged than your white counterpart. It's that simple.

user942557 · 28/11/2024 19:14

Why is white privilege so hard for white people to grasp

Actually there are fewer abortions amongst black women so if you're disabled and black you stand a better chance of being born.

I’m not denying or minimising other forms of discrimination and prejudice. I’m saying racism is unique. Because it is. The history is unique. The context is unique. Saying ‘but what about’ minimises what we really need to be fighting tooth and nail.

user942557 · 28/11/2024 19:38

@Fgfgfg Not being born isn't a disability 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Imaging having to live like that, go through all of that AND THEN be disadvantaged further because of your skin colour.

I want to bang my head off a wall because some people Just.Dont.Get.It.

You can sit here and list all of the ways other people are oppressed, or marginalised, or discriminated against but if you are not white, there is still an additional layer of oppression, marginalisation and discrimination.

My goodness, I am white and trying to explain this is driving me crazy. I don’t have to go through this day in, day out. I don’t have to explain over and over again, because I don’t experience such ignorance. Again, because of white privilege.

I agree but standing a higher chance of being born is certainly a privilege over not being born at all.

user942557 · 28/11/2024 19:55

Thanks @Error404pagenotfound

The thing is all of these things listed are not exclusive to white people therefore it's not comparable. There's little point listing things that are disadvantages when black people can experience them too.
Racism is exclusive. That's the point.

(Sorry I know I'm preaching to the choir)

R u fr?

You're now arguing that a seed has less privilege than a black person.

No please don’t apologise, I hadn’t thought of it that way so thank you.

Not reading a random link.

Let us know when you stop with the white fragility and accept your privilege.
