To think parents should at least iron uniforms

I see some children on the way to school and they look so scruffy, I mean I might be being a bit mean but it’s important to me that my children look presentable, I can’t imagine sending my children into school with a mega creased jumper/cardigan it looks awful.

It's called my mum actually gives a shit about me so I can chuck my shit on the floor even amongst the wet towels because she will sort it and make sure I have clean clothes for the next day because she's a legend

Or...I have zero respect for my mum, I'm only bothered about me, because I'm a teenager, doesn't matter anyway because my local slave will fix it for me.

Yes because it shows I am being lighthearted

Judgey McJudgerson..
I think you should mind your own business and concentrate on your own kids.
You have no idea what is happening in people's houses or why they do or don't iron.

I also have a weird thing about teeth brushing, if I left it to my husband they would never brush their teeth. I sometimes do it myself to
make sure they are done properly. They will thank me when they are older. I also apply factor 50 on every single day 🤣😩

Making sure your child has brushed their teeth and wearing sun screen is a part of basic parenting. Although, if they are a teenager, you may want to stop doing it for them.

Odd that you conflate it with ironing jumpers, which is not.

Charlemagnee · 20/09/2024 09:03

I don’t mean a few creases. I mean full on crumples like it has been just scrunched on the floor all night

I'm more bothered by the fact we're expected to send them in full uniform yet they're painting every day and not allowed to use aprons (only for water play apparently). I didn't expect to have so many stained and ruined shirts in week 2 of school. They even have a bloody mud kitchen to play with in the yard.

That’s crazy! They want to do all this child-centred stuff but don’t want the children to wear practical clothes for doing it in! How do they reconcile the two?

partiallydeflatedbutoptimistic · 20/09/2024 09:05

@FlippyFloppyShoe yup that too

Apollo365 · 20/09/2024 09:05

Used to iron everything until this came up in a whats app chat and everyone told me I was insane. Now I have three kids in school I wouldn’t dream of even trying.

It probably has been scrunched on the floor all night.

Most people don't re-iron school uniform that's already been worn.

Most primary school children don't have a full set of clean uniform every day (waits for OP to judge that as well ...)

Timble · 20/09/2024 09:05

I feel like a massive weirdo now !! I iron all of our clothes. I’ve tried hanging things up but they never drop all of the creases. I don’t mind ironing to be honest, I stick a film on the tv and watch that while ironing. I am working part time though so I have time to do it.

Charlemagnee · 20/09/2024 09:07

I feel like a weirdo too 🤣

God no. DS has I think 3 pairs of shorts and 4 pairs of trousers. It was too hot for trousers today so he re-wore yesterday's shorts.

MayaPinion · 20/09/2024 09:07

Never ironed a uniform. Kids didn’t care. Their friends and teachers didn’t care. I never noticed whether their friends or teachers had ironed clothes. It has just never crossed my mind. Both kids got excellent grades. One has just started college and one has just started at a top RG university. They don’t iron either. It’s just not a thing in our world.

boymama82 · 20/09/2024 09:07

Our ironing board was brought out last week and my boys who are 3 and 4 said 'wow what's that' 🤣🤣🤣 our clothes go in the dryer so they're not creased 👍

2magpie · 20/09/2024 09:07

I iron the school uniforms and some of the kids t shirts but thats all. I dont judge people who dont do that. Its my choice to iron them, it's their choice not to! 🙂

Looneytune253 · 20/09/2024 09:07

I've always said the only thing I iron is uniforms but these days with only one child in their last couple of years in school I have adopted the 'check if it really needs ironing' approach. If we hang everything nicely after washing the answer is usually no.

CombatLingerie · 20/09/2024 09:08

@MumblesParty I was the same when a single parent. I also agree with you @DarkandStormyNightie I never turned up for my job in creased clothes it would have felt unprofessional and my DS liked to be smart for school. He did his own ironing and packed lunches from about the age of 10. I have to say I am retired now so I don’t iron anything anymore. I like ironed bedding so I send it to the laundry.

Kingsleadhat · 20/09/2024 09:08

One of my boys took up a martial art when he was seven and part of the discipline was to have sharply pressed kit. The first time I ironed it he looked at the iron and said "What's that, Mummy?" 😂

middleagedandinarage · 20/09/2024 09:09

Charlemagnee · 20/09/2024 07:56

This is me 😅. I don’t iron anything else but I have a weird thing about the kids looking presentable for school.

Same OP, i am by no means a perfect mum/housewife etc. But i also have a thing about kids being very well presented for school and iron their uniforms. I definitely am in the minority though, i don't think the school even care much. Even the way the head teacher dresses at my DD's school is very casual/no effort.

My middle one asked my mum what it was - I got a very pointed look.

My eldest said “Our mummy uses that for Hama beads, not shirts”

If the care instructions include ironing, I’m not buying it.

StarGirrrl77 · 20/09/2024 09:10

For what it's worth @Charlemagnee I'm with you! I used to iron pretty much everything in the days when I had time, now I just do the essentials, and I absolutely think school uniform is one of those essential things. Kids look so much better in ironed school clothes, and it takes me about 10 minutes on a Sunday night to get it done. I never understand the ironing bashers!
