To think parents should at least iron uniforms

I see some children on the way to school and they look so scruffy, I mean I might be being a bit mean but it’s important to me that my children look presentable, I can’t imagine sending my children into school with a mega creased jumper/cardigan it looks awful.

I agree that it doesn't look nice. But it's their kids, their lives.

I'm incredibly busy but can spare a few minutes to iron once a week.

CleverLemonCat · 20/09/2024 21:11

I worked full time and taught my ds how to iron when he was 12, told him that if he wanted to go to school looking as though he had been dragged through a hedge then it was up to him. He never ironed and I just gritted my teeth and let him get on with it!

Makingchocolatecake · 20/09/2024 21:07

I don't even iron my own work clothes because the creases drop out on the journey there

housethatbuiltme · 20/09/2024 20:53

When I was in junior school there was a girl in my class who came in with a horrible burn on her arm. She had been standing on a stool while ironing and fell off and the iron landed on her. Ironing was her 'chore', we where only 7 at the time. I remember being pretty horrified by it at the time but back then no one seemed to care.

My mam use to iron on a towel on the floor (we did not own an ironing board) if she did iron but she hated it and would avoid it, she never wanted us anywhere near the iron.

Half an hour a day is 30 minutes a week.

I’ll admit my cleaner does my ironing, but only tops, DH’s work shirts and DS’ school polos. The school trousers and jumpers really don’t need ironing.

No way on earth you’d catch me ironing underwear. I do a load of washing a day.

I think you need to work on your Maths!
Personally, I used to love ironing, and I worked full time with no cleaner, especially clothes dried outside, I more than once set the ironing board up outside if it was hot, but usually it was a Sunday evening watching something mindless on TV.

LyndaSnellsSniff · 20/09/2024 20:32

The view from my classroom window is of our all weather pitch. Most days there are about a dozen discarded school jumpers scattered across it. After lunch, many of the children have yoghurt splattered down their fronts. They get whiteboard pen all over their sleeves. They fall over in muddy puddles.

They're children being children and worrying about unironed uniform is utterly futile.

Mymanyellow · 20/09/2024 08:08

Oh does that actually work? Was going to get some for bedding.

Yes,I use it on my work shirts
I wash and dry them, then when I want to wear one,I spray the shirt (or whatever) and hang it up while I go for my shower
Come back downstairs and it's dry and crease free
Just be careful if your spraying while standing on tiled or laminate flooring-ive slipped a few times (I never learn)

Fuuuuuuck thaaaaaat

😂

MissUltraViolet · 20/09/2024 16:06

My DD wears a blazer over her shirts that they are not allowed to remove (unless it's red hot) so ironing them is pointless.

I spray my washing with crease releaser when it's hanging up drying on the line or airer, works really well. Screw ironing, already not enough hours in the day.

user1497787065 · 20/09/2024 15:44

I always ironed uniform and agree that all clothing looks better when ironed but MN is always anti ironing.

dizzydizzydizzy · 20/09/2024 15:28

YABU. It shouldn't be the top of anyone's priority list.

Some days just getting out of the door on time is an achievement.

TheKeatingFive · 20/09/2024 15:04

When I was a TA around 12 years ago I remember a discussion in the staffroom and it was quite an eye opener as to how many teachers said ' they can tell which parents care or not and what their house looks like' by the state of their uniform.

TBF, I don't think your average mumsnetter is very concerned about this kind of judgement these days.

Twentypastfour · 20/09/2024 15:03

I would iron it if it needed ironing but it doesn’t. I don’t tumble dry and everything is hung up straight away on the line and then on hangers inside and nothing has ever looked remotely scruffy. Most children’s clothes these days are non iron (or low iron) aren’t they?

Of course some children look scruffy going into school (and 95% of them look scruffy coming out! - but after a day of eating, playing sport outside, using marker pens, painting etc then who can blame them) but that’s things like unclean clothes, untucked polo shirts or buttoned shirts etc isn’t it rather than ironing?

HeliotropePJs · 20/09/2024 15:00

Kids' clothes (including school clothes) should not require ironing. The idea of uniforms sounds good (eliminates brand snobbery, simplifies choosing clothes for the day, etc), but it brings its own set of problems, and uniforms that crease easily are a poor choice. They may look nicer (more formal) when freshly ironed, but it's not practical for children and makes more needless work for already busy parents.

When it comes to my own clothes, if it has to be ironed, I don't buy it!

cuu · 20/09/2024 14:58

I reckon ironing was like a status symbol for men to show they had a wife at home. Now people work loads more there's no ironing

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 20/09/2024 14:54

Maray1967 · 20/09/2024 13:47

Same here. In fact I iron practically everything - it’s my tv time. It’s amused my SIL for years. But when I was doing school drop off I didn't think about whether anyone else did.

My secondary aged dd does her own as her school does have shirts that require ironing.

As a teenager she has more free time and more free brain capacity than a single parent working full time.

Primary school uniforms are generally non iron.

Crikey. I get that some of the posters here don't like ironing or do ironing, but is there any need to be so aggressive about it??! Piss off?! I'm not sure the OP's opinion on ironing should elicit so much rage!

It was a very judgy and ignorant post.

I don’t think I’ve ever responded “piss off” to someone on here before. I’ve set out very clearly in my post why I say this.

WeetabixWithButter · 20/09/2024 14:45

I iron all the dcs uniform. I find it looks too creased of not. Despite it being taken directly out machine , shook out and hung on the line. I'm clearly doing something wrong.

When I was a TA around 12 years ago I remember a discussion in the staffroom and it was quite an eye opener as to how many teachers said ' they can tell which parents care or not and what their house looks like' by the state of their uniform. This was a bog standard state school in a fairly deprived area.
Now whether that was how they truly saw it or just being bitchy. It's just always stuck with me.

ithinkilikethislittlelife · 20/09/2024 09:50

I enjoy it. I switch off and put something on the tv and will happily iron. And I love getting into a bed that's freshly ironed and seeing my family go off for their day looking today byes my kids return looking like they've been dragged through a hedge but tomorrow they will look fresh again. And in all the drawers there is neatness so I can always find what I'm looking for. It's the gift that keeps on giving 😉

To be fair I did used to be like that, when my kids were young and I worked part time. I think it was a sort of nesting phase of my life which I have thankfully outgrown. Honestly at some point in your life after years of ironing it is highly likely you too will just say fuck it one day and you'll never iron again.

longestlurkerever · 20/09/2024 13:54

I think the point is that there's an opportunity cost to ironing. You could be using that time to do something else, more useful or more enjoyable. So you have to see some kind of value in it. Some people obviously do, as they like their children to be, or be viewed by others, as presentable. Other people just don't see that as important and don't massively care if others judge them as "gross" their own bizarre reasons . A few people have said they or their children have experienced feeling uncomfortable for not having ironed clothes and I don't doubt that but also don't think you can extrapolate to say that all other children with unironed clothes feel the same way. I can confidently say that mine don't. I've asked them. I've also commented when they've screwed ironed clothes into a ball and they've said that it's a massive waste of time me ironing them as they do not care. So I stopped.

SeptemberSunglasses · 20/09/2024 13:50

I wash uniform Friday evenings and hang up on a clothes airer ready for Monday, it gets wrinkly in the tumble dryer so cutting out the tumble dryer also cuts out the need to iron. In between I sponge yogurt and snot off my child in the mornings. Sorry.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 20/09/2024 07:48

Primary - no point
Secondary - I only do shirts, because they look awful otherwise. Takes 10 mins. Don't judge anyone who doesn't though.

People also comment on how good
my children smell. The nursery workers said they used to love sitting next to my son as he always smelt so good. I took pride in that but I know I am
ods

Why are people sniffing your children... they a kids not cocaine?

I hope you did reported these weirdos?

Sartre · 20/09/2024 13:01

As long as the kids are clean and cared for, I really don’t give a shit about their clothes being creased.
