To think parents should at least iron uniforms

I see some children on the way to school and they look so scruffy, I mean I might be being a bit mean but it’s important to me that my children look presentable, I can’t imagine sending my children into school with a mega creased jumper/cardigan it looks awful.

I just think that life's too short myself

2k2j · 20/09/2024 07:50

Yabu

Ironing is a waste of life.

I have an 18yo and a 16yo. And me and dh. Nobody irons anything. Haven’t done for about 20 years.

I do hang things carefully if they can’t be tumbled and I don’t buy things that crease badly. There are loads of easy care shirts on the market for kids and adults. Why anyone would make work for themselves by getting any other ones beats me.

SallyWD · 20/09/2024 07:51

I iron their shirts if particularly creased. Usually the jumpers, shirts and trousers don't need ironing. If they're more creased than usual, then I'll iron them.

Pyjamatimenow · 20/09/2024 07:44

I iron stuff but then I find it crumpled on the bed with dd lying on top of it before she’s even worn it

This is why I didn't bother.

And sitting in the car with seat belts on. And being covered with a cardi/jumper most of the year.

Rosaofthevalley · 20/09/2024 07:52

No thanks I don’t have the time, energy or inclination.

arinya · 20/09/2024 07:52

I dont iron and I don’t do any uniform washing mid week. I can’t be bothered with ironing but I don’t like her looking scruffy for school so I’ve always had plenty of uniform to make life easier. Secondary school age now so doesn’t get grubby anymore but still has 6 white blouses, two skirts, one blazer, 2 PE kits. I expect her to hang her skirts and blazer up every night so they don’t get creased.

Tagyoureit · 20/09/2024 07:53

I don't iron anything, hang it up, smooth out the creases whilst still damp and it doesn't need ironing. Kids come home, I check their uniform to see if I can get one more day out of it and hang it up.

I'll admit to be more judgey of white shirts gone grey because they've been washed with darks! My mother would turn in her grave if I sent my kids to school in whites gone grey!

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 20/09/2024 07:53

I don't iron much but school uniform needs to be. My mum didn't because she said no one did, they did, I got upset about it at primary school, my dad started ironing my uniforms every Sunday after that (he left for work at 5:30am so no time to do it in the mornings), I was so relieved. No one had said anything but I was really self conscious about looking scruffy, we already were quite poor so I didn't have the same things as my school friends.
DH or I iron DS' uniform every Sunday and hang it in his wardrobe for the week (him more often than me because he's better at ironing and will do it while I'm doing something else with a podcast he likes on)

That's what happens when you cripple the economy to the point where both parents are forced to work full time just to survive.

Surprise surprise, little Timmy doesn't get a pressed shirt for school. Life is too fucking busy for that Victorian wife shit.

We both work full time, we are graduates but climbing the career ladder requires more academic qualifications so we are also studying. Still manage to batch cook, iron, do house work, renovate and waste time in mums net. It's about priorities

RainintheDesert · 20/09/2024 07:53

When DD was at school I'd iron her blouses because otherwise they looked terrible but I hung up everything else in a certain way and...no creases!

Nobody has time for ironing. I'd judge neglect more on if the uniform was filthy/not getting washed over it not getting ironed.

Stressfordays · 20/09/2024 07:53

I don't see the point, as long as they're clean and presentable. Maybe if I was a SAHM of 1/2 kids I'd consider it but as a lone parent of 3 who works full time, I've got better things to be doing.

Zanatdy · 20/09/2024 07:53

I never ironed school uniform as I just hung the shirts on a hanger to dry and same for pinafore / skirts. Now DD is in 6th form some of her clothes do need ironing but I never ironed her uniform during the core school years. I don’t really care if someone is judging any creases as they will appear anyway as kids play etc.

SnapdragonToadflax · 20/09/2024 07:53

No thanks, I don't iron 😊 There are a million better ways to spend my time. Judge all you want, I don't care.

GigiAnnna · 20/09/2024 07:54

I don't iron a lot. Most stuff doesn't need ironing if it's been finished off in the dryer for 5 minutes and I mostly buy things that don't need ironing. But I agree that kids should be smart for school in clean smart clothes and brushed hair at least at the start of the day. If you wouldn't turn up to work dishevelled, then you shouldn't want your kids to.

ShinyPrettyThings87 · 20/09/2024 07:54

I'm that weirdo who likes ironing 🤣 I don't iron anything but school uniforms though! Loved ironing their little jumpers and now their shirts. They don't care about their trousers being ironed but I do them anyway. I even iron creases down the front, don'tcha know!

LittleBitAlexisLaLaLaLaLa · 20/09/2024 07:55

Your standards are your own, but like others on this thread I have never wasted my time ironing school uniform. Clean faces, appropriate clothes and mine are good to go.

Charlemagnee · 20/09/2024 07:56

Oh I feel shitty now 🤣 I don’t judge their parenting by it at all and I work 24 hours a week so probably have the time. Everybody has a thing I suppose and mine is ironing 🤣

I iron ds shirts but that's it.
Do you make a habit of judging children?

OrdsallChord · 20/09/2024 07:56

Lmao no.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 20/09/2024 07:56

It's important to you that your kids look presentable.

It's important to me to avoid judging people for stuff that I consider to be trivial and superficial.

We all have different values.

This is me 😅. I don’t iron anything else but I have a weird thing about the kids looking presentable for school.

I’m not judging children at all l, it just really bothers me when I see a really crumpled jumper, I think I am just odd

OP posts:
GuestFeatu · 20/09/2024 07:58

Yes you are odd. They are children. They don't need to have ironed shirts!

Rewis · 20/09/2024 07:58

My mother gave me an ironing board when I was 18 and moved to my own flat. It has been used maybe twice. Then realised that ironing sucks and never did it again.

CaptainCabinetsTrappedInCabinets · 20/09/2024 07:58

It's the ones with kids who look scruffy but mum has clearly spent a couple of hours pressing her own clothes, straightening her hair and putting makeup on thay make me judgy.
