To think parents should at least iron uniforms

I see some children on the way to school and they look so scruffy, I mean I might be being a bit mean but it’s important to me that my children look presentable, I can’t imagine sending my children into school with a mega creased jumper/cardigan it looks awful.

I dont iron a thing
It's why crease release was invented
Couple of sprays,job done

Oh does that actually work? Was going to get some for bedding.

Amberpants · 20/09/2024 08:09

I don’t even own an iron, my child never looks scruffy though 🤔 don’t think I’ve ever seen a creased jumper or cardigan

Ineedaholidayyyy · 20/09/2024 08:09

I only iron the white polo's, I don't bother ironing the sweatshirts or trousers. You would probably judge me as a parent too for sending my child in with mud stains on his white polo shirts...which have been washed obviously but not everything comes out.

Thepeopleversuswork · 20/09/2024 08:09

If I wanted to judge anyone (I don’t because each to their own) I might be tempted to judge parents who prioritise ironing and having a pristine house rather than spending that time with their children and having a lived in relaxed home.

And this…

Judgment works both ways OP and you might find that others judge you for prioritising ironing over things like education and happiness.

WeAreWhereWeAre · 20/09/2024 08:10

I used to religiously iron everything on a Sunday afternoon. It took around two hours and I hated it. Yet every day they'd come back from school looking scruffy.

So I gave up. I just do 'wash and hang' now. Nothing gets ironed and I have a free two hours on a Sunday.

Harry12345 · 20/09/2024 08:10

I’m the exact same, my mum didn’t let me leave the house without clothes ironed, i can’t help but judge a little if I see a school shirt totally creased, it looks awful, but that’s the only thing I ever judge and I know it’s a me issue

W0tnow · 20/09/2024 08:11

I never did, but clothes were always clean and folded/hung neatly which meant they weren’t horribly creased? When you give them a good shake and smooth before hanging to dry they’re fine, surely? I think school uniform fabrics, when treated carefully, don’t need ironing.

Mymanyellow · 20/09/2024 08:12

I used to iron shirts. Trousers and skirts if needed
mine had blazers so didn’t iron those. I do iron but only things that I think need them. Still managed to make time for other things too.

Player5 · 20/09/2024 08:13

Mind your business. As long as kids are fed and clean I don't think it's an issue.

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 20/09/2024 08:16

I can’t imagine sending my children into school with a mega creased jumper/cardigan it looks awful.

I can't imagine judging a child (or their parent) for a creased jumper.

A shirt at secondary school I can understand ironing. But a sweatshirt type jumper?

TinyTeachr · 20/09/2024 08:16

Ironing jumpers????? The uniforms my kids have the jumpers are woolly, I dont think anyone irons them. I give shirts a quick press if they look creased, but they are normally fine if shaken out of the washing machine and dried on a hanger. Trousers I do more often as they do seem to made of something creasy.

Feel free to judge me. Sometimes it's it's choice between ironing and reading with the middle kids, or getting on the floor with the baby or helping eldest with homework. Sod the ironing in those circumstances. Happy and secure and a little creased is just fine.

Oh, and from the username you can see I'm a teacher. I don't often judge parents, but when I do it's nothing to do with uniform! Some children seem to attract mud and chaos no matter how carefully their parents check them as they leave the house. By the end of lunchtime half the boys are covered in mud, the little ones may have food on them..... so what!?!

Ruelzdontapply · 20/09/2024 08:16

I don't iron the uniform Its not normally creased after it's washed.

I can't actually remember the last time the iron was used.
Things that tend to crease get tumble dried and hung straight away.

Nomorecoconutboosts · 20/09/2024 08:17

And sorry OP if my reply was a bit sharp.
Probably hit a nerve (my issue not yours)
My uniform was filthy/unwashed growing up (boring complicated story).

You’ve recognised your ‘thing’ is ironing.
my ‘thing’ is laundry - just not the ironing part. I really love it, I’ll never tire of the luxury of a washing machine and the means of getting clothes dry and aired in a fresh environment.

fuckssaaaaake · 20/09/2024 08:17

lol

MSLRT · 20/09/2024 08:18

Most working mums have so little time (and let’s face it most of the day to day jobs fall to the women). They do the most needed jobs. Packed lunches, kid’s hair, cleaning teeth etc. please don’t judge them for not ironing.

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 20/09/2024 08:19

We both work full time, we are graduates but climbing the career ladder requires more academic qualifications so we are also studying. Still manage to batch cook, iron, do house work, renovate and waste time in mums net. It's about priorities

I agree about priorities. Ironing isn't one of mine though. I don't not do it because I don't have time, it takes 2 minutes to do a school shirt. I don't do it because I don't consider it important.

mitogoshigg · 20/09/2024 08:20

My kids managed to get through school without me breaking out the iron, they were rather successful. Also I'm rubbish at hair too. Mind your own business or offer to iron for people!

pinkroses79 · 20/09/2024 08:21

I never iron anything. My children's school uniform did not consist of a shirt though, so it was unnecessary.

JoJothegerbil · 20/09/2024 08:21

I don't have school age children any more, but when I did, no ironing was done. Still don't iron and I don't care what people think.

CharlotteBog · 20/09/2024 08:23

I am 20 years into uniform. I have had brief forays into the world of ironing. I honestly can't be arsed. The only thing that might look a bit creased is the polo or regular shirt, and they usually drop out.
Everything else is 3000% polyester.
Unless your kid is playing for the country I don't think PE kits need to be anything other than practical.
I did start ironing my son's 6th form smart/casual clothes but he asked me not to. It wasn't the done thing.
I don't think a parent has stopped being my friend because they've spotted un-ironed clothes on my children and I don't think those parents have stopped their children being friends with mine.
The teachers don't give a hoot. Of all the things they have to worry about, my child having a polo shirt collar that won't lie flat is pretty much near the bottom of the list.
One child has managed to graduate from uni despite the creases, the other is in year 11 and I can guarantee that me starting to iron his uniform will not help get him through this year.

Haroldwilson · 20/09/2024 08:23

Well the kids don't give a shit, the teachers don't give a shit, I don't give a shit. And I don't give a shit what other people think. So no.

Women of the world, stop ironing! Sit down with a book or other similarly enjoyable past time instead!

I wonder what the carbon emissions created by ironing are, each year?

mitogoshigg · 20/09/2024 08:24

Oh and mine were the ones in odd socks, mismatched clothing on weekends etc, i don't care i suppose what others think. I find it upsetting when I see perfectly dressed children being told not to get them dirty playing, let kids be kids

Mojodojocasahous · 20/09/2024 08:24

I don’t iron, I don’t wash either, that’s DH’s job. I think life is too short tbh.

Havingtoomuchfun · 20/09/2024 08:24

I'm a primary deputy head. My partner is a primary headteacher. He just asked why I was laughing. I read him the first post. He joined me in laughing.

You REALLY think we care if a school uniform is ironed? Seriously?!

Both my children went to school in unironed clothing. Partners son still goes to secondary school in unironed clothing.

Just when I thought Mumsnet couldn't bring out any more crazies, here they are 🤣

Exactly. I can't imagine having crease levels even enter my mind when seeing kids playing.
