To think parents should at least iron uniforms

I see some children on the way to school and they look so scruffy, I mean I might be being a bit mean but it’s important to me that my children look presentable, I can’t imagine sending my children into school with a mega creased jumper/cardigan it looks awful.

I don't iron at all. I was wondering if I should dig out my iron from wherever I banished it to for school uniform. I decided to buy non iron uniform instead and it really doesn't need ironing.
I used to iron DDs uniform but they looked like a wreak by the end of the day so always seemed a bit pointless.
By all means iron your kids uniform but stop being so judgemental. Some of us have enough shit going on without worrying about ironing uniforms.

Half an hour a day is lots of time 😂

I can definitely find many better uses of half an hour a day.

I'd rather go for a short run that iron. My kids benefit more from me doing that, than fucking around ironing clothes ie I'm happy.

In the poorest parts of India the children go to school immaculate. The girls have their hair in very neat and tidy plants with tied with ribbons. The parents have pride that their children can go to school.

They don't iron though.....

My parents grew up in Pakistan, my dad literally in the slums and they would be sent home if their hair was messy, shoes not shined etc

To this day they maintain their appearance well- dad still wears a full suit when flying!

But did he, or did he not have an ironing board in the slums is the question....? 🤔

SleepyRich · 20/09/2024 09:38

I don't iron anything, that goes for me too and I work in uniformed services!!!

Whilst my stuff looks like it should be ironed the kids uniforms look fine actually, once I've scrapped all the peanut butter from breakfast off...

are you a boomer?
I don't mean that derogatorily either but I haven't known anyone since the boomer generation that irons... my parents and the gen X friends certainly lamented and avoided it like plague and most my millennial friends don't own an iron.

Hmmm yeah this. ^ I am Gen X (just! Born in mid 1960s!) And I did used to iron tbh, til the 21st century. I discovered you don't NEED to iron most things, and that hanging them on the line to dry, and then hanging them up on a coathanger (or folding them neatly,) means no ironing is needed.

Anyone who is ironing stuff that doesn't need ironing is a bit batshit tbh. (And most stuff doesn't need ironing!) My mum (born early 1940s,) used to iron everything! Apart from shirts and trousers, and skirts and blouses, she ironed socks, knickers, hankies, pillow cases, ties, the lot. Nothing went un-ironed. Then again, she didn't have as much to occupy her as we do now (like spending 15-20 hours a week + on Mumsnet!) 😆She couldn't even drive, so couldn't tootle off out for little day trips on her own. She was pretty much stuck in the area she lived.

mamajong · 20/09/2024 09:40

Personally I have limited time and choose different priorities, each to their own. The younger kids have uniform that doesn't need ironing and the teens know they need to hang stuff immediately to avoid creases...if they don't, c'est la vie 🤷‍♀️

There are so many injustices in the world worth getting angry about, to me this is just a stealth 'aren't I a great person' thread, I hope you get the validation you seem to need

Iforgotagain · 20/09/2024 09:42

That's 3.5 hours a week though. If your iron for 30 minutes every day until old age that's an entire year of your life spent ironing!
Surely there are more enjoyable things you'd rather be doing?

housethatbuiltme · 20/09/2024 09:43

CharlotteBog · 20/09/2024 09:33

are you a boomer?

Boomers are aged between 60 and 78. It is unlikely (though not impossible) that OP is a boomer, especially if her kids are primary age, which I presume they are because if they're secondary then they can iron their own uniform.

A lot of people at the school gates at our school are grandparents as parents are working and easily boomer age.

My nana however use to sit at the bedroom window watch all the kids walk to school along our road and comment on it while pointing out her kids where always perfectly presented and listing off how kids 'should' look. She also hate boys with 'longer hair' as she termed it 'girly' and 'scruffy' etc...

OP said she 'sees' kids going to school and she couldn't imagine doing that with her kids (same as my nana ranted) she never said she was dropping her own primary aged kids at school gates.

She may well be my age or younger though and have inherited outdated views from older generations (the things we latch onto from parents/grandparents can be odd) which is possible but I wouldn't say its anywhere near the 'norm' for younger generations.

Bloody Nora. I am absolutely staggered at the amount of you who don't iron. I iron everything. Clothes, bedding, underwear. It's takes no time. Half an hour a day tops. The thought of putting my kids/dh/myself into creased clothes.... gross.

Meant to quote this post

Anyotherdude · 20/09/2024 09:44

To be fair, you’re not in charge, OP.
You can judge people you’re interviewing for a 6-figure job at Canary Wharf by their ironing standards if that’s your job and you like , but it’s not your job to judge school kids or their parents.
There’s a slight difference in expectations here, and it’s the Head Teacher’s decision whether to pursue education first, or to rush in where angels fear to tread on presentation…

100% this. ^ I think the majority of adults who are Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z have better things to do with their life than sit in the window, staring at the children walking to school. Then judging how they look (and how crap their mothers are - because let's face it, this is not an attack on fathers is it, as it's the women who are expected to do the grunt work,) and then posting a thread on Mumsnet about it!

I enjoy it. I switch off and put something on the tv and will happily iron. And I love getting into a bed that's freshly ironed and seeing my family go off for their day looking today byes my kids return looking like they've been dragged through a hedge but tomorrow they will look fresh again. And in all the drawers there is neatness so I can always find what I'm looking for. It's the gift that keeps on giving 😉

middleagedandinarage · 20/09/2024 09:51

*@RuggedHairyTortoise I agree, I think it's very smart. I was actually a bit disappointed in how informal my dd's school is in relation to uniform.!

OP's posts on there indicate she has young children.

Nope, not joking. Bloody love ironing. I've got two irons in case one packs up 😂

Oh I feel shitty now 🤣 I don’t judge their parenting by it at all and I work 24 hours a week so probably have the time. Everybody has a thing I suppose and mine is ironing 🤣

No, I think yours is judging.

People also comment on how good
my children smell. The nursery workers said they used to love sitting next to my son as he always smelt so good. I took pride in that but I know I am
ods

There are certainly some odd ones in this scenario but the it definitely not you, OP!

Half an hour a day is 30 minutes a week.

I’ll admit my cleaner does my ironing, but only tops, DH’s work shirts and DS’ school polos. The school trousers and jumpers really don’t need ironing.

No way on earth you’d catch me ironing underwear. I do a load of washing a day.

ithinkilikethislittlelife · 20/09/2024 10:01

I do a wash every single day (except Christmas Day). There is always ironing to be done. I even iron tea towels. I don't iron socks though. Not sure why 🤷🏻‍♀️

Each to their own. But judging other people is a bit shitty I think. (As the OP is doing.)

AmberFawn · 20/09/2024 10:05

Ironing is for mugs.

Oh I don't judge. I don't know anyone who irons like me. I am amazed though at the amount of people who don't iron at all. I thought most people chucked an iron over stuff but hey ho.

Nope they used an old piece of wood on the floor and covered it with a sheet to iron clothes- btw the iron wasn't our electric irons but a cast iron one that needed to be heated up in the fire they used for cooking
