To think parents should at least iron uniforms

I see some children on the way to school and they look so scruffy, I mean I might be being a bit mean but it’s important to me that my children look presentable, I can’t imagine sending my children into school with a mega creased jumper/cardigan it looks awful.

Why would what I do upset you. I Am in the minority 🤣

Because you are passing judgement, and implying that parents who don’t iron are doing things wrong.

Plants in their hair? Wow

I assume the poster meant 'neat and tidy plaits,' but plants is much better. 😆

Nah I don't iron anything. DDs uniform doesn't crease too much though she mostly wears pinafore dress and polo top

SunQueen24 · 20/09/2024 09:24

Next you’ll be telling me they ought to brush their teeth before they leave too!

ithinkilikethislittlelife · 20/09/2024 09:25

Bloody Nora. I am absolutely staggered at the amount of you who don't iron. I iron everything. Clothes, bedding, underwear. It's takes no time. Half an hour a day tops. The thought of putting my kids/dh/myself into creased clothes.... gross.

hookiewookie29 · 20/09/2024 09:25

My iron is only used for Hama beads.....

Toseland · 20/09/2024 09:26

I'm really busy so I only iron linen clothes and school uniform, nothing else.
I think it's important for a kid's self-esteem to go to school looking well presented - ironing a fresh shirt is a quick and simple way to look smarter.
It does matter and people do notice - I often have nice comments about my son's appearance.

crunchyleavesontheway · 20/09/2024 09:26

A friend had 2 DD same age as my kids and the eldest always looked tidy and presentable but the youngest looked like she had been dragged through a hedge before school. Fairly sure she got them ready the same but the younger kid was high energy and very busy and by the time they got to school she looked bedraggled 😂
I used to help in a school and I agree it's hard seeing the kids in dirty or crumpled uniform but quite often circumstances in their home life made uniform a very low priority.

ClairDeLaLune · 20/09/2024 09:26

I think it’s more important not to judge others. It makes you a far better human being than whether you do ironing or not.

Having said that I’m totally judging you OP.

You would have hated us. My kids polo shirts were alway covered in pen marks but they did it so often that I couldn’t keep buying new ones. The pen marks just wouldn’t come out no matter what I did 🤷‍♀️ I just told them that if they wanted to go to school looking like a tramp then that was up to them 😂

Nottodaty · 20/09/2024 09:27

I’ve never sat there judging the creases in other people children uniform. I would find something to do if I had that sort of time on my hands.

MoodEnhancer · 20/09/2024 09:27

Life’s too short for ironing. Money is better spent on things other than an ironing service.

Yup. My son comes out everyday with a messed up white polo top.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 20/09/2024 09:29

Having been the scruffy, crumpled kid, I always ironed my kids' shirts and anything else that looked less than perfect when it dried. Didn't matter to me that DD2 would emerge from the classroom at the end of the day looking like she'd gone for a few turns in a cement mixer as long as she went in looking and feeling neat.

housethatbuiltme · 20/09/2024 09:30

are you a boomer?

I don't mean that derogatorily either but I haven't known anyone since the boomer generation that irons... my parents and the gen X friends certainly lamented and avoided it like plague and most my millennial friends don't own an iron.

My Nana was a lot like you though (regularly said this), she was born in the 1920s and her sister was a professional presser (ironed and folded clothes for a living).

The view point is not only outdated but its pretty ignorant of those who struggle physically, mentally, time wise or financially. Having the time, money, energy and ability to iron clothes is quite a privilege and one many struggle with (and always have even back then they where just treat badly for it).

At least now those innocent kids from less privileged/able backgrounds aren't getting bullied by most for being 'scruffy' and looking 'awful' (are you really slagging off children?) because they dont have a pencil straight dart ironed into their school trousers.

Why is it gross? I agree you might not think it looks tidy, but it's not dirty.
Do you honestly think that people (I'd say maybe 99% of us) walking around with underwear that hasn't been ironed are gross?

Maaofatoddler · 20/09/2024 09:31

Charlemagnee · 20/09/2024 08:51

Yes for me it is important to be presentable and a clean ironed uniform, clean face etc makes me think that the parents have made the effort, obviously parents prioritise different things like I said I would never ever let anybody get into my car 🤣

I'm with you OP. DC still in nursery but I iron everything that I can. I do work full time but I make the time.

I never had an un-ironed shirt ever during my school as my mum made sure to have nice clean ones ironed everyday.

When they start school they will have iron shirts / jumper every day.

Flatulence · 20/09/2024 09:31

I don't really care what other kids look like and don't really notice but my kids starting each day looking presentable (including ironed uniforms and neat hair) is important to me... Not that they come home looking like that but I can try 🤣

Half an hour a day is a lot of time.

I'm out of the house for work at 7.45. Get back at 4. I cook dinner, have a tidy round. We read, then do spellings and times tables with the youngest. Then we have clubs on most evenings between 6-8.

Then it's home for a shower and bed.

Dh and I usually shower then head up at 9 for an hour of reading or watching tv before we go to sleep.

I don't have half an hour each day spare to bloody well iron 🤣

If I do have a free half an hour I'd rather go for a walk or do some exercise.

JustEatTheOneInTheBallPit · 20/09/2024 08:35

I actually think OP has a point and I will begin ironing uniforms immediately

I will have to stop washing them though.

That’s not as daft as it sounds. Ironing made more sense when people only had clean clothes about one a week! Now people change their clothes pretty much daily, ironing has become a much more time-consuming chore for those that still do it!

CharlotteBog · 20/09/2024 09:33

are you a boomer?

Boomers are aged between 60 and 78. It is unlikely (though not impossible) that OP is a boomer, especially if her kids are primary age, which I presume they are because if they're secondary then they can iron their own uniform.

Gettingcoldbutcosy · 20/09/2024 09:34

It's not 'gross' either.

All our clothes are washed and we shower daily.

It might not look as tidy but it's certainly not gross.

Half an hour a day is lots of time 😂

I can definitely find many better uses of half an hour a day.
