Mine, I’m a bit ashamed about that.

On the other hand, it only comes on between about 6:30 am and 8:30 am and then in the evening between about 5:30 pm and 9 pm. And even then only when the temperature goes low about 16 C. It’s on now, which surprises me a bit.

cartagenagina · 18/10/2026 19:39

Everyone I know!

Anabolicanna · 18/10/2026 19:39

First time today, just for an hour.

BoarBrush · 18/10/2026 19:46

Mines been on for weeks, southern Scotland has been shite for weeks. The frost was so hard this morning that it's killed all my dahlias and begonias overnight, as in yesterday they were all shades of pinks/purples/reds/orange and today all look brown and wilted like I've taken a flamethrower to them. Have just 4 plants left in both front and back garden.

CherryKerry · 18/10/2026 17:43

Yeah, for the last 2 months!

Yep same

MyAzureZebra · 18/10/2026 19:48

Nope, holding out until November at the earliest.

Marmite27 · 18/10/2026 19:49

No, but we have lit the log burner a few times.

Gloriousgardener11 · 18/10/2026 19:55

Not yet, I still remember the bloody heatwaves of this summer so I’m enjoying the chill for now!

GOODCAT · 18/10/2026 19:56

No but in the South of England. Getting closer to it being cold enough though. I was cold getting out of bed this morning and currently on sofa with a blanket, but warm enough like that at the moment.

MudandMoet · 18/10/2026 19:59

The wind today has been bloody freezing. I had to double jacket up today for feeding (farmers) so I’m not coming back in to a cold house. The heating is most definitely on and has been for a few weeks. We’re not as hardcore as most it seems!

Seawolves · 18/10/2026 20:00

Mine kicks in when the room temperature drops below 22°, it came on a couple of times in September but not yet this month.

Thecows · 18/10/2026 20:00

Yes, also don't get all the competition, I'm so hard that I'm still in a t shirt and sliders in 3 degrees lark ffs

GintyMcGinty · 18/10/2026 20:00

Never had it off - Scotland. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Its currently 6C. Will freeze over night and I had to defrost my car this morning.

RandomUsernameHere · 18/10/2026 20:02

Not yet, it’s a bit chilly at the moment looks like it’s going to get warmer next week.

AnewlifeintheCountry · 18/10/2026 20:04

Not yet but we have been lighting the log burner some evenings over the past week or so. It’s roaring away now and it’s lovely.

TeenLifeMum · 18/10/2026 20:05

No. In the south west and I’m not even wearing a coat on dog walks. I do have my heated blanket on right now and have a few times in the evening but I’m only wearing light pjs.

TheFairyCaravan · 18/10/2026 20:05

Not yet. I am almost finished crocheting a big, thick Aran blanket for DDIL for Christmas so I’ve been under that quite a bit. I think the heating will be going on this week looking at the weather forecast, tbh.

What temp do people set their thermostats to, for the heating to click on automatically? I see a range here from 18 to 21. I have no idea what's normal! I appreciate it varies a lot from person to person, but I am cold all the time unless it's a heatwave so hoping to get an idea of what most people consider a good balance of cost and comfort.

I've had it on for 45 mins in the mornings a few times, and twice now in the evening

I have mine at 17 when I’m on the sofa with pyjamas and blankets, or cleaning or whatever where I get warm. If I’m showering and getting ready to go out I put it up to 19.

ajandjjmum · 18/10/2026 20:07

DH finally gave in to my nagging today!

72Kit · 18/10/2026 20:09

If you're putting it on for the first time this week, it's worth bleeding the radiators and testing the carbon monoxide alarm while you're at it. And with the clocks going back next weekend, find the torches now, before you're hunting for them in the dark during the first storm power cut.

2catsandhappy · 18/10/2026 20:10

Not yet. Got my winter dressing gown on.

tarheelbaby · 18/10/2026 20:12

Started late last week? Min temp set to 16C and it's been jolly chilly in the mornings.
Now struggling with antique boiler which doesn't want to run ...

It's not about the date on the calendar for me although I know for many Brits it is.
(Absolute landmark moment when DFil offered to put on the heating one year in May for my DDs ...)

Worldwide2 · 18/10/2026 20:22

Me! Have had it on in the mornings and evenings just to give it a blast. Bloody lovely.

CrazyCatMam · 18/10/2026 20:28

I'm in NE Scotland. Mine's on all year. It clicks on / off depending on the thermostat. I set it to 15 in the summer months and then 17 in Autumn. If I feel chilly I crank it up to 20. It's an old house but it's been fully insulated and keeps the heat. It feels stuffy if it's too warm. We pay by monthly direct debit to spread the cost out through the year.

Currently in a cold, draughty holiday cottage with stone floors and even with the thermostat at 22 it's freezing!
