That’s it’s.

OP posts:

It's never been off, if it drops below 17 it kicks in so it's been on a few times first thing. Was quite surprised it was on yesterday afternoon when we got in at about 3pm but this house seems to keep it's heat so it wasn't on long.

Spamatemyraisens · 18/10/2026 18:27

Nope but the fire is in so it's toasty in the sitting room at least.

Mariets · 18/10/2026 18:30

Mines been on ever since the hot spell ended. I hate being cold and having to wear lots of clothes and have throws over me so mines set to 21°.

cramptramp · 18/10/2026 18:31

Caved and put it on for an hour today. My hands were freezing so that prompted it.

Specialneedsnightmare · 18/10/2026 18:34

No it's currently 20 degrees indoors. I won't consider heating until it goes below 18.

sherbetlemonade · 18/10/2026 18:38

We have an open-plan house so if anyone opens the back door for more than a few seconds the temperature indoors goes down very fast.

emmetgirl · 18/10/2026 18:44

Yes- in Cornwall

the80sweregreat · 18/10/2026 18:48

Yes, it’s too damp otherwise

professionalcommentreader · 18/10/2026 18:50

Not yet, still double figures in temp.

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 18/10/2026 18:56

It's on all year round, I rely on the thermostats to kick in when necessary - not when the calendar says it's Autumn.

Swissmeringue · 18/10/2026 18:58

It's never switched off, if the thermostat goes below 18 it comes on, I don't care what month it is.

Chipsahoy · 18/10/2026 18:59

Ours is on a thermostat. It comes on when it goes below the temperature we want. I’d say daily for a week or two now it’s been on in morning and evening. September was earliest I noticed it on. North east Scotland here and we hit below freezing last night.

Smokewhistle · 18/10/2026 19:04

Just put ours on for the first time since it was fitted in April. It’s only been delivering hot water over the summer. It’s all now controlled on a Vaillant App. I turned it on and couldn’t hear anything, had to go upstairs and open the cupboard. It’s much quieter than the one that was replaced. Hope this one lasts as long as the other one (20 years).

workingcocker · 18/10/2026 19:13

No heating yet, but the fire is lit.

Dehumidifier also on 2 or 3 times a week to keep the humidity lower so it’s easier to heat. we can also then afford to keep the windows closed a little more.

We have oil heating and it’s currently extremely expensive to fill the tank. We have about 1/5 of a tank so hoping it will drop at least a little before we need it.

AllaMova · 18/10/2026 19:15

We cracked today. One of our cats buried himself under the duvet this morning, so he must have been feeling the chill.

Sconefuddled · 18/10/2026 19:18

Nope will last til November - it’s about £650 (all in for gas and electricity) a month to keep mine warmish for 8hours a day so I leave it late and just heat the evenings. Enough to keep damp at bay and warm us up. Bloody victorians and their lack of insulation!

bearbeatcheesesticks · 18/10/2026 19:19

Mine's never turned "off" - it comes on depending on the thermostat. It kicked in this morning for the first time this autumn.

Gettingbysomehow · 18/10/2026 19:22

Its not cold enough in somerset although Im using the sofa blanket.
My old cat aged 16 starts making blanket nests when its cold and she hasnt started yet.

FelixDoublyDelicious · 18/10/2026 19:27

This competitive heating thing gets on my nerves
My husband is unwell and gets cold due to poor circulation
We have no choice
We go without to keep him warm as it's a priority

IwanttoWFH · 18/10/2026 19:27

Not yet. I’m trying to wait until 1st November! (But I will put it on if I get really cold). I am utilising the heated blanket on the sofa though. And I’ve had the electric blanket on the bed on for 20 mins or so before I go to sleep.

Anna20MFG · 18/10/2026 19:28

What temp do people set their thermostats to, for the heating to click on automatically? I see a range here from 18 to 21. I have no idea what's normal! I appreciate it varies a lot from person to person, but I am cold all the time unless it's a heatwave so hoping to get an idea of what most people consider a good balance of cost and comfort.

I've had it on for 45 mins in the mornings a few times, and twice now in the evening

What is competitive about it? Maybe if the price of keeping warm was not so high, many people would have their heating on sooner, rather than later. You should not have to be going without, in order to keep your unwell husband, from getting worse, due to the cost of heating.

gingeristhenewblack43 · 18/10/2026 19:32

My DD and I both have asthma triggered by cold damp air, so yeah the heating has been on.

We’ve had some lovely sunny October days which have been because of no cloud cover over night resulting in lower temps, so the heating has clicked on before we get up. Equally we’ve had some cloudy damp days so I have put the heating on manually to take the damp out of the air inside.

I don’t have a tumble drier so as the weather becomes more autumnal / wintery I dry clothes on the indoor airers with a dehumidifier.

What a blessing it must be to not have health conditions affected by cold damp air, and to be able to afford to run a tumble drier for 6-8 months of the year.

DingDongBerrily · 18/10/2026 19:32

Our log burner has been lit every evening for the past couple of weeks. No central heating on yet, so the only really warm room is the living room.
It's currently 24° in the living room! But only 15° in the rest of the house.

Throwntothewolves · 18/10/2026 19:36

Where do you live that you don't have your heating on yet?
It was frosty here this morning in central Scotland, so yes, we have our heating on.
