That’s it’s.

Excessive heating is just like setting fire to five pound notes. Who wouldn't want to avoid that if they had the choice ?

For me there are balance points between switching the heating on fully and having it off.

It has got colder in the last few days so now using the gas fire and heated throw on the bed. Much cheaper than whole house central heating, which I only really use when it gets very cold, mainly in Dec, Jan and Feb to mostly stop the pipes freezing.

Nobody has mentioned "excessive heating"?

TaterTots68 · 20/10/2026 11:22

I've got ours set to come on if it gets below 18°c in the day 12 at night - so it has come on a couple of times. I've had to put the duvet back on the bed (we just have a thin cover when it's warm). I'm not mentally prepared for cold and dark after such a lovely summer and early autumn.

For me, being warm and comfortable is one of the best uses of my money I can think of.

Same here, I value that above other things.

Sartre · 20/10/2026 12:06

Yes it’s on. It’s set to 20 so as soon as it gets that cold it’s on and it has been for at least a week.

Yes but mainly to dry our vast amount of washing on the radiators. Had a hot water bottle a couple of times too already. I prefer a hot water bottle.

I recommend a dehumidifier. Washing then dries quickly on a clothes maiden.

Ours comes on on its own when it's needed. We don't touch it ever so the decision is not made by us. We set it to what we're comfortable with 4 years ago and it does its thing. So it's been on a couple of mornings lately after cold nights but not later on, so far.

I came on to ask about this but I thought I was being dense! We rarely 'put the heating on'. We have the thermostat set and it kicks in when it drops below that.

What do people actually mean when they say they've put the heating on?

I mean occasionally we do override it but only if it's particularly cold outside and the house isn't warming up quick enough.

IclimbedSnowdon · 20/10/2026 12:50

Ours went on yesterday for the first time. Thermostat set at 20°C.

JustGoogleIt15 · 20/10/2026 12:56

LochKatrine · 20/10/2026 08:13

Can't you set the thermostat? I believe 18°c is recommended for health.

I could set the thermostat, yes.

I tend to turn it way down over summer, just in case it drops low enough at night to kick in. So for me turning it on is really just turning it up again.

DB and I are both retired, One thing we agreed on was that we're being warm in winter whatever it costs. Thanks to not needing heating for months I have a nice surplus stashed with Eon.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 20/10/2026 13:05

On my boiler there are options for the heating and hot water, Off/Timed/Once/On. In summer I use the Off option for the heating. When it gets a bit chilly (like it did last night) I change it to timed so the timer kicks in.

Yes I don't get it. I think some people must switch it off altogether and so have to switch it on again. I think my sister probably does because she talks about "putting the heating on". I'll have to ask her. As for me, as someone who's fairly new to central heating, I'm leaving well alone!

Thebigarsedbitch · 20/10/2026 13:22

We cracked at the end of last week and have had it on for an hour each evening to take the chill off, but it won't be used more frequently until mid November. Thank God for heated throws and hot water bottles!

YessicaHaircut · 20/10/2026 13:27

Yes, we had it on yesterday after school for the first time since about April. There was a cold wind and I had been standing in the school playground for a good 45 minutes at pick up time (they allow the children a bit of running around time at the end of school which is generally a good idea for DS!). And have been at home today so put it on for an hour when it dropped to 18 degrees indoors as that’s when I start to feel chilly.

Same. I test central heating in September and it stays on form then on but thermostat is turned down as house heats up nicely during the day anyway

Ah that makes sense. I'm probably going to irritate people by saying I think this might be something my DH does without me really realising. Not because it's a 'man's job' but because he is more inclined to be proactively managing things like this whereas I am more of a bystander! He was muttering about radiators the other day and doing a pre winter boiler/radiator check.

Get a tumble dryer, it's a game changer. The new ones aren't expensive to run, very energy efficient and you never have damp washing about the place.

@LochKatrine I don't want a tumble dryer. And there is no space for one in my house. I do have a dehumidifier though.

Just occasionally when needed....so just an hour here and there to take the chill off

This competitive heating thing gets on my nerves
My husband is unwell and gets cold due to poor circulation
We have no choice
We go without to keep him warm as it's a priority

Why read threads that get on your nerves? Also, it isn't competitive. Just light hearted and makes a change from combattive and heart wrenching stuff. Almost a joke thread since it comes every Autumn without fail. Btw no, haven't put it on. Always put it on some time in first half of November.

Large airing cupboard very useful.

Yesterday evening said 'fuck it' and turned it on. Now sitting here nice and toasty at 19c.

19 is far from toasty IMO. i'd be absolutely miserable.

we switch ours off altogether because sometimes in the early summer eg, the sun is out, the windows are open to air the house but there is still a cold air and the heating would come on. happened a couple of times this year...house started to heat up uncomfortably. OK i suppose if you never air your home.

How very rude of you! I can't see what's to be gained by making a pointless little jab like that.

I can't imagine where you live where there was any air cool enough to activate a heating system this summer. Our doors and windows were open permanently for about 3 months and I live in the far north of England where many people seem to think it's permanently winter. Our heating never came on once, as it never does in the summer, even an ordinary one. You must have some weird little micro climate in your area. Either that or there's something wrong with your heating system.

Well you should know about the boiler check in case you ever do become responsible for it. In most cases you will void the warranty for the boiler if you don't have an annual check. In nearly all cases, it's also a requirement for your house insurance.
