Quick guide: screenshots and screen recordings across devices

A guide to taking screenshots and screen recordings on different devices.

1. On iPhone and iPad

Screenshot

  • With Face ID: Press Side button + Volume Up.

  • With Home button: Press Home + Side/Top button.
    (Find screenshots in Photos > Albums > Screenshots.)

Screen recording

  • Go to Settings > Control Center > Screen Recording → add it.

  • Swipe down from the top-right (or up from bottom on older devices) → tap the Record button (circle).

  • Stop by tapping the red status bar.


2. On Android

(Steps vary slightly by manufacturer.)

Screenshot

  • Most devices: Press Power + Volume Down simultaneously.

  • Some models: Use Power + Home.

  • Check notification bar for quick access.

Screen recording

  • Swipe down from the top → look for Screen Record in Quick Settings.

  • Tap it, then confirm audio/visual preferences.
    (If not available, try free apps like AZ Screen Recorder.)


3. In browsers

Chrome, Edge, Brave (Desktop)

  • Screenshot extension: Use Ctrl + Shift + I (Developer Tools) → then press Ctrl + Shift + P, type “screenshot” → choose option.

  • Or install extensions like GoFullPage for full-page screenshots.

Firefox

  • Right-click on a page → select Take Screenshot.

  • Or press Ctrl + Shift + S (Windows) / Command + Shift + S (Mac).

  • Choose Save visible or Save full page.

Safari (Mac)

  • Use macOS screenshot shortcuts (see section above).

  • For full-page grabs: enable Develop > Show Web Inspector → then use Export as PDF.

4. On Windows

  • Full screen: Press PrtScn (copies to clipboard—paste with Ctrl + V).

  • Active window only: Press Alt + PrtScn.

  • Custom area: Press Windows + Shift + S → drag to select area.

  • Save automatically: Press Windows + PrtScn (saves in Pictures > Screenshots).

Screen recording

  • Press Windows + G to open Xbox Game Bar → click the Record button.
    (Note: Some apps and desktops may not allow recording.)


5. On macOS

Screenshot

  • Entire screen: Press Command + Shift + 3.

  • Selected area: Press Command + Shift + 4 → drag to select.

  • Window only: Press Command + Shift + 4, then hit Space, and click the window.

Screen recording

  • Command + Shift + 5 → choose Record Entire Screen or Record Selected Portion → click Record.

Stop with the control bar or Command + Control + Esc.
