'Why I resigned from the Scottish Greens' - Andy Wightman

Here's a glimpse at the internal political machinations of the Scottish Greens.

From what Wightman is saying here, it sounds like women in the party who had spoken against a 'sex work' positive policy were accused of being 'transphobes'. Just one instance of how accusations of 'transphobia' are being used with what seems to be no justification at all to smear and silence party members and politicians.

It's a pretty shocking read.

'I have never understood why one has to subscribe to queer theory and gender identity theory in order to improve the lives of trans people. But that’s the bar that has been set in the SGP.'

Thank you

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 07/08/2021 17:16

Thanks
He always comes across as such a thoughtful person - I remember being so shocked when he didn't vote for JL's 6 words amendment - that a party would run him out whilst seemingly wanting the woman hating PH tells me everything I need to know.

MSPs are representatives of the people, not delegates of political parties. I wish this was the case

Really interesting read. How toxic and muddled the Greens have become and what a loss to the party he is. This bit stood out for me: 'Using accurate language has nothing to do with trans people's human rights' - yes, absolutely.

howonearthdidwegethere · 07/08/2021 18:02

And yet "feminist to her fingertips" Sturgeon is just days away from announcing that the SNP will go into a coalition with the Scottish Green Party.

She ain't no feminist. And the Greens are batshit crazy.

Chikenyhead · 07/08/2021 18:28

This is EXACTLY what SW have been positioning themselves for for years.

It is toxic misogyny on speed.

Bastards.

ArabellaScott · 07/08/2021 18:59

Yep, Gibbons.

'I have always been clear that the job of an MSP is threefold: to represent constituents on matters within the devolved competence of the Parliament, to hold the Scottish Government to account for their decisions, and to scrutinise legislation and make laws for the people of Scotland. MSPs are representatives of the people, not delegates of political parties.'

If Nicola Sturgeon is a feminist I'm a three-toed sloth.

I hadn't connected the name before, the Eilidh Martin that was a "complainant" against AW is this person wingsoverscotland.com/the-quiet-part-out-loud/

[Edited by MNHQ to add that link contains sexual content]

DontDoThatGeorge · 07/08/2021 23:26

Ah, the Greens. Having a normal one again.

If only they would stick usefully to green earth policies and not get involved with this misogynistic nonsense.

Keepitonthedownlow · 08/08/2021 00:03

So sad to have lost someone of Andy's calibre in the Scottish Parliament

Oh, GOD, I thought I'd seen the last of that person. I can't believe the Greens side with Martin over Wightman.

Sorry ChickenyFlowers
There was far worse on Twitter that was not included in that article

ArcheryAnnie · 08/08/2021 01:21

That's a very well-written, comprehensive takedown.

I also found it interesting how often he mentioned women resigning from the party.

ArabellaScott · 08/08/2021 13:01

Apologies to anyone who read the things on that link above and are upset by them. CW - sexual content inc age related stuff, from the co-convenor of the 'Rainbow Greens' group, iirc. Presumably still in place?

Another political party which is more interested in ideological purity than winning votes and making a difference. I despair.

ArabellaScott · 09/08/2021 13:22

Quite terrifying that they are about to be handed power in our govt.

BlackForestCake · 09/08/2021 14:32

Quite desperate too that Greens are going along with new oil fields and new roads, just so they can push their precious gender ideology through.

Really! That's a marked contrast with what Andy says about his background at the start of that blog post.

I think I should be apologising! Sorry - I'll report my post & ask MN to edit.
