Did anyone listen to this, so I don't have to smile

(Or is everyone else hoping someone else will grin )

I caught some of it, thanks to OH. He had to close the windows as my swearing got too loud. I don't recommend it unless you need a reason to raise your blood pressure.

Melroses Sun 02-Aug-20 12:41:55

It will be interesting who they choose and how far down the hole they intend to go.

I had forgotten that Ms Moran was one of the guests on Woman's Hour, just after the GRA consultation had closed, alongside Michele Moore, who was really brilliant (so I forgot about poor old Layla).

They both denied knowing anything about large donations from the pharmaceutical firm that makes puberty blockers hmm.

Melroses Sun 02-Aug-20 12:46:33

It's good they were asked. So many things that don't get asked on these programmes.

The person who asked was a caller, a Scottish woman called Victoria; if you are on here, thank you. You clearly know far more about what self ID actually means than either of the 2 LibDem MPs who are pushing it.
They outright lied about what it meant.

Melroses Sun 02-Aug-20 13:08:59

Thank you Victoria. star

I will listen on catch up when it comes available, to hear her.

I think Ed Dave just told Iain Dale “you have failed”. No, Ed, you have - quite spectacularly.

It appears Layla doesn’t even understand what self-I’d is

Just reading this and noticed the very ironic mistype below!

"Mr Moran added that "the liberal approach to this is that every individual has the right to decide who they are, it's not up to society to do that, it's for the individual to do that.""

highame Sun 02-Aug-20 16:29:36

How do you know it was a mistype @DialSquare this could have been Laylas specific instruction and given the nature of her responses to self i-d I wouldn't be surprised 😁

TheRealMcKenna Sun 02-Aug-20 16:30:07

DialSquare priceless!

Very good point! As you say, it would explain a few things!

That wouldn't be surprising. I think the majority of the people promoting self-ID don't understand what it is.

Layla saying that you couldn't just wake up one morning and decide that you are going to identify as the opposite sex. That is the definition of self-ID. I'm completely mystified as to what she thinks it is.

If there is no requirement to obtain a medical diagnosis of gender dysphoria, or to 'live in the acquired gender' for a period of time, and all you have to do is sign that you intend to do so, what 'process' does she think there is going to be? What is to stop people just deciding to do this on a whim, or for the purpose of obtaining access to vulnerable women and children?

Melroses Sun 02-Aug-20 18:06:24

I missed them on Times Radio at 5-6pm too.

I'm trying to remember where I read it, but someone recently summed up the Lib Dem leadership contest as "Choosing the lesser of two feebles."

ThePurported Sun 02-Aug-20 18:24:10

I hope Ed Davey wins. These batshit policies were created by men for the benefit of men. Let him defend them.

Layla kept interrupting the caller and telling her that she didn't understand what self-ID means. When it's obvious that it's Layla who doesn't understand (or she does, but is intent on misrepresenting it). If she had let Victoria speak, she would have been able to explain to listeners (and the two MPs) exactly what it does mean. But they're doing their best to stop that information getting out to the wider public.

"Choosing the lesser of two feebles" was a brilliant headline in the Times about the dire choice facing Lib Dems grin

EdgeOfACoin Sun 02-Aug-20 20:20:02

Layla Moran was so patronising when addressing Victoria! And then she came out with some nonsense like 'why can't we just all be happy'. She clearly has no real understanding of any of the issues - she can't see beyond 'this poor person trapped in the wrong body'. I don't think she has the imagination to countenance how self-ID could be abused or why there are very good reasons why women might not want to share changing spaces with male-bodied people. Having listened to her before I know she thinks that changing rooms aren't really a problem because there are always individual cubicles available (not true in many places such as gyms). She also seems to think that self-id is the first step on the road to full surgical transition which in many cases is not true. There is just no excuse for that level of ignorance at this stage in the debate. Ed Davey is clearly equally as bad.

Iain Dale, thank goodness, did press the candidates on this issue a bit more. He couldn't spend a long time on this, but I'm glad he didn't let their fluffy answers pass without comment.

I listened. What drives me mad is the virtue signalling waffle that doesn't address the question or any of the details. Iain Dale, to be fair, was much better than many interviewers, but when Ed Davey says 'A woman is anyone who identifies as a woman' then the question I want to ask is 'So what do you mean by 'identifying as a woman?'. Women are individuals so how can you 'identify' as them all? Beyonce, Myra Hindley, Theresa May and Mother Teresa are all women. What links them is their shared biology, not a common set of personality characteristics! If being a woman isn't a simple matter of female biology, then what, exactly, IS a woman?

But it never gets to this. Layla gets to patronise callers asking questions that Layla cannot answer and Ed Davey gets to feel all very virtuous pronouncing on something that will never involve him personally.

Thank God they are down to 6 MPs.

Just bumping this to say thanks to PaleBlueMoonlight for finding this evidence of the leadership candidates completely misrepresenting what was said on the Iain Dale show. Links to the YouTube vids and a guide to what time they talked about it:

Agree. If they can't be bothered/don't have the intellectual capability to understand the need for legislation to have clear meaning, what other issues are too boring/difficult for them to understand?

No other party seems so lacking in basic competence (which is quite a statement to make at the moment.)

TheFleegleHasLanded Tue 25-Aug-20 17:32:15

Have now watched both segments.
In both videos Ed mentions the importance of Helen Belcher, an 'amazing campaigner' doing 'cross party work behind the scenes' and is full of praise for Penny Mordaunt.
Layla calls Liz Truss 'the so-called Equalities minister' confused

Lots of 'most oppressed', 'face the worst discrimination', "MSM keep asking us for the definition of women to trip us up'.
It's really quite astonishing watching two elected politicians speak with almost religious fervour about this, they are absolutely refusing to see why women have any issues with 'trans' rights; we just need educating!

merrymouse Tue 25-Aug-20 17:39:57

Lots of 'most oppressed', 'face the worst discrimination', "MSM keep asking us for the definition of women to trip us up'.

I just don't think they are capable of understanding or creating legislation.

The law is blind, and can only work with clear language and definitions. Rubbish in, rubbish out.

Based on this, assuming the EU is still one of their key issues, I don't believe they have the intellectual capability to understand what they are talking about.
