There is some really good stuff on Twitter tonight.(14 Posts)
JK Rowling's tweet has opened up the flood gates for all sort of tweets, articles, ideas and quotes that I'm feeling really inspired and enjoying the chance to discover new information and writers that I have previously missed.
My favourite so far is this open letter:
"It’s the only type of body that gets you thrown on the funeral pyre when the husband dies. It’s the only type of body that gets your feet bound and your breasts ironed. It’s the only type made pregnant through rape and burned with acid, the only type expected to sit quietly and listen while we redefine it away, the only type men have spent millennia criticizing and critiquing and buying and selling until we suddenly decided we don’t even know what the fuck we meant this whole time."
Thanks- I'll read this now. If I can ask you to return the favour (I know it's not a favour 😀), would you watch this video that my friend Anna made of how brutally the police have been behaving in NYC?
Wow, awesome article. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks @BitOfFun, I had seen parts of Anna's story on Twitter but I am very glad to have heard her report. She is so impressive.
The speed of the breakdown of law and order in America is frightening.
I really liked JKR's tweets. Certain groups I am part of on fbook etc have gone straight down the transphobic route.
I would like to write to her and thank her! Don't worry, I won't!
‘*As long as pimps, priests, and politicians know what a female body is, I do too*.’
That article is fantastic PerspicaciaTick. The best I've read on that issue.
That's an incredible article, BitOfFun. It makes America sound like a third world dictatorship.
Did you also see on twitter yesterday that even transes are starting to turn on Mermaids too?
Thanks BoF, for that link. God, that's terrible - that there were women in the holding cell with her who'd been there for 7 days without access to phone calls or seeing a judge. And healthcare workers arrested for "burglary" while their patient pleaded for them not to be taken away. And a 12 year old boy!
This is why the whole "I'm not watching that because it's right/left wing" thing gives me the rage so badly. Yes, Rebel News is very right wing - but from the sound of it, Slatz was doing a good job of reporting - covering the way the looting was being used politically by a minority, the fact that the majority were peaceful.
So many great points.
"It seems you do know who has a female body, when it comes to deciding which perspective gets ignored.
Sex is such a mystery to you when women want shelters for themselves, meetings for themselves, words for themselves. Pardon me for asking, but is it equally mysterious when you log off Twitter and move over to Pornhub? The true nature of a female body is so complex when you lecture. Does it become simple again when you masturbate? Who does the laundry in your house? Were you somehow able to navigate an inchoate soup of X’s and Y’s to saddle your girlfriend with the dishes? Give yourself some credit — I think you know perfectly well what a female body is. "
"You know what a female body is, dude? It’s the only type of body that makes men like you ask such stupid questions."
I love it. It's the point I've made over and over again to Woke Irish Twitter Hell, that in our country, in living memory we had women routinely sacked from their jobs on marriage, made to undergo medieval procedures like symphyiosotomy, prevented from controlling their fertility, incarcerated in institutions for getting pregnant out of wedlock, forced to give their children for adoption and treated like pariahs if they stepped outside the boundaries of Catholic morality. In 1992, a 14 year old rape victim was prevented from leaving the country to get an abortion because of the 8th amendment. Everyone knows what a woman is, it isn't fucking complicated, and here they are pandering to a load of men again and putting them first. Craven fucking idiots. Sorry, having a bad day scrolling through social media, some people really should be ashamed of themselves.
I love this bit:
"They confuse — or, perhaps, intentionally conflate — imprecision with invalidity, social perception with social construction, and binarism with exclusivity. In other words, they trade in the all-too-familiar illogic that festers at the intersection of science and philosophy, where ontological cowardice appears as the highest form of nuance."
Specially the "perhaps intentionally conflate".
