This was retweeted by Adam Boulton this morning. The thread itself is pretty harrowing but clearly shows some of the issues around self ID.

All tweets from the woman in question in a thread.

How is it that as soon as a male person says "I'm a women", all common sense flies out of the window?

I assume that the rules of the refuge are in place to protect and that the staff are aware why these rules are in place. But it seems that validating transpeoples identities is more important than safety.

Do people really believe that validating male transpeople identities is essential at all costs? Or do people, even those who work in refuges, believe that the cost to vulnerable women a low price to pay?

SwearyG · 30/07/2018 13:56

The responses to Matthew d'Ancona so far are depressing.

happydappy2 · 30/07/2018 14:01

For some inexplicable reason-or could it be all the finance behind the trans movement-the likes of Jennifer Pritzker/George Soros/Martine Rothblatt (Jennifer & Martine used to be men but now identify as women & have strong links to pharma companies.) Corporations are scared of the potential implications of being seen to discriminate against a trans person.... so yes-all sense goes out the window

ZuttZeVootEeVro · 30/07/2018 14:05

It seems to be the typical responses:

Are you sure it happened?
It would never happen here.
The EA keeps women safe
As a gay man my opinion is..
It happens so infrequently.

Ereshkigal · 30/07/2018 16:49

I am not trans but I am the g in lgbt so I have some modest locus.

Why?

foxyliz26 · 30/07/2018 17:47

Shocking !

a Jewish couple known to my mother was refused admission to an inn , and the woman was pregnant ,

they had to stay in a stable , where her baby was born apparently

thankfully some rich benefactors in the form of 3 wise men came to their aid, the local shepherds also helped out apparently !

FermatsTheorem · 30/07/2018 18:27

Not sure I'm getting your bizarre analogy here. Who's meant to be the Virgin Mary in this story, the traumatised woman with PTSD from repeated sexual assaults by men who is now being required to share sleeping accommodation with a male-bodied, substance abusing person, or the substance-abusing transwoman?

BadassUnicorn · 30/07/2018 20:05

It's shocking this woman is being put through this and the ones in charge of the refuge are not taking her seriously. It's placing her in danger right now, and will no doubt re-traumatize her.

SophoclesTheFox · 30/07/2018 20:28

Nice empathy, there foxy. Really nice.

Agrona · 30/07/2018 22:32

Self Id in action.

But this never happens (until it does)..

Another Canadian shelter:

nationalpost.com/news/canada/kristi-hanna-human-rights-complaint-transgender-woman-toronto-shelter

She said shelter staff told her: “We’re all about inclusion and it’s unfortunate that you feel this way… Deal with it or leave.”
