With Man Friday's wonderful Hannah Clarke quoted:

The Times comments are always a cut above :)

Excellent article, states outright the issues.

enoughisenough12 · 29/07/2018 08:08

Good to read the comment from the head of the European Tourism Association about how 'culturally conservative' visitors will be negatively affected.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 29/07/2018 08:12

Ah yes, the consultation that no-one is aware of unless they follow the right people on Twitter...

happydappy2 · 29/07/2018 10:07

Brilliant article & great comments all against the idea. The hypocrisy of the man is clear for all.

Theinconstantgardener · 29/07/2018 10:29

Thats a top article. Have sent to a few friends with kids who are frequent visitors to London and think Im making a fuss about nothing, live and let live etc etc..

arranfan · 29/07/2018 10:43

While I read the article the comments went from 56 to 84 - people seem to be waking up, in more ways than one.

enoughisenough12 · 29/07/2018 10:47

There are some very good comments under that article. Can't wait to see what they say if the Times published the latest NUS officer debacle.

enoughisenough12 · 29/07/2018 10:54

And there you go - someone's mentioned it in the comments!

HawkeyeInConfusion · 29/07/2018 11:00

The comments are heartening.

scotsheather · 29/07/2018 11:01

I can't read it all as its behind a paywall but please correct if I'm wrong. Aren't trans people already allowed to do so making the title itself misleading as those who object are trying to change what is happening already, not prevent it. Happening already doesn't make it right or wrong as countless scenarios show, it just makes you wonder the overall accuracy of the report.

Wanderabout · 29/07/2018 11:10

Why are City of London having a consultation if this would make no difference then scotsheather ?

Andrew Gilligan again.

Comments are really good.

EmpressOfSpartacus · 29/07/2018 11:16

It's a sharetoken link, scotsheather, so it should take you through the paywall.

scotsheather · 29/07/2018 11:25

Read my post again Wanderabout. It is about this article itself, not the wider consultation. Its not the case toilets are 'about to open to', they pretty well are already and those not following the debate may not realise this.

Clicky link got me through the paywall.

enoughisenough12 · 29/07/2018 11:49

scotsheather
The City of London (or the particular mason involved with this consultation) is obviously of the opinion that there is something they wish to change - presumably to enable all the 'self identifiers'. I understand that the headline may be 'misleading' but the whole trans issue is shot through with simplistic statements (TWAW) etc so I can forgive this one.

hackmum · 29/07/2018 11:55

I'm hugely heartened by the comments.

What made me laugh was this line:

"Trans women are women," Lord added.

It's like they've all had media training that insists they must shoehorn the phrase "trans women are women" into every single interview, in the belief that if you keep saying it, people will think it's true.

SarahAr · 29/07/2018 14:43

Another day, another transphobic article in the (Sunday) Times.

The headline reads "Ladies’ loos at City landmarks may open to trans women".

And further down

"The move would mean a woman who was born a man and still had male genitalia could use the facilities because she now identified as a woman."

Funnily enough trans women, some with and some without their original genitalia,
have been using the ladies' loos at City landmarks for years. This has been for many reasons, not least that since 2008 it has been illegal to discriminate against trans people (more technically those with the protected characteristic of "gender reassignment") in the provision of services subject to very narrow exceptions.

And guess what. This has been on a self-id basis. There are no panty police outside the Barbican toilets. No showing birth certificates at the Golden Lane Leisure Centre before you are allowed in.

Move on; nothing to see here except transphobia.

ImPreCis · 29/07/2018 14:44

WHen a ‘consulation’ is as biased as this one clearly is, are the City of London not clearly paving the way to a legal challenge?

BoreOfWhabylon · 29/07/2018 14:46

Comments are v encouraging!

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 29/07/2018 14:50

In which case as existing law seems to be problematic WRT to women's rights that will hopefully be looked at very closely too. The argument of "you've already lost all of your rights, so don't kick up a fuss now" isn't a great look tbh...

OlennasWimple · 29/07/2018 14:50

Remember, you don't need to be logged in to "recommend" comments on the ST website

Mossandclover · 29/07/2018 14:55

Up to now transwomen have had to at least make a vague effort to follow female stereotypes to enter ladies toilets. With self id men won't even need to do that. Any man will be able to use female facilities whenever they feel like it however stereotypically male they present.

ZuttZeVootEeVro · 29/07/2018 14:59

panty police

Hmm
