Aridane · 03/05/2018 12:09

I'm starting a thread for those of us watching Season 2 and who want to discuss ahead of its screening in the UK.

So far I've watched the first 3 episodes.

God the 1st episode was grim.

@Praisebe was she the one who wasn’t singing/speaking during the weird circle thing with the wives in the middle and the handmaids outside?
Might have to skim watch it again....can’t cope with watching the whole thing.

Praisebe · 16/05/2018 08:59

It was Ofglen just double checked on YouTube

CadleCrap · 16/05/2018 09:50

Ffs, don’t be an Ofglen....first FGM the second tongue cut out.

I just watched BBC 2 documentary on the Chinook Girls in Nigeria.
It brought home to me that 'stories' in The Handmaids Tale are still happening today.
Forced marriage.
Brutality
Being infected with HIV and possibly AIDS.
Their babies infected too.
Mutilation.
Victims of bombings.
And there are still many kidnapped girls missing in Nigeria. Sad
They must not be forgotten.

Trippedupagain · 16/05/2018 10:47

I agree, eloisesparkle. I read an interview with Margaret Atwood where she said that she quite deliberately didn't put anything in her book that hadn't been done somewhere in the world already. I can't remember the exact wording because obviously some of it is fictional, but her general idea was to highlight our world rather than just invent a new one entirely.

Praisebe · 16/05/2018 11:29

I can't wait to see episode 5 tomorrow morning. It doesn't actually effect me i just find it interesting to follow im the same with sad documentaries and such

Praisebe · 16/05/2018 11:30

The way i see it ending ia June been reunited with Luke and Hannah after Gilead is overthrown and destroyed by the Canadian army but i don't think June and Luke's marriage could survive the fact she loved another man while in Gilead

Aridane · 16/05/2018 15:12

Just seen episode 5 - more grimness. Anyone else seen yet?

With the Colonies, is it just a place for punishment or are thenwomen actually doing something worthwhile? All we see are the women digging soil.

They’re cleaning up toxic waste in the book. I haven’t seen episode five yet. Off to look for it now.

Aridane · 16/05/2018 15:46

Hmm - doesn’t seem very effective with just a few shovels and no machinery

Battleax · 16/05/2018 15:52

I’d like to know where the colonies are exactly.

A quick google threw this up;

The documentary on the Chibok girls BlushBlushBlush

BG2015 · 16/05/2018 19:07

Just watched episode 5!

I'm so glad the June we know and admire is back!

Aridane · 16/05/2018 19:09

Though it seems to have taken a failed suicide attempt to get here there.

I thought she was miscarrying. What was that about?

Anyone else think Serena Joy is going to crack soon? As much as she desperately wants a baby, she is way too intelligent for all this fakery. She knows the baby isn't hers, or even her husband's, and her faith will never overcome her intellect to convince her that it is.

Now that "Offred" is broken, I think it will be Serena who shakes things up by being unable to accept the baby as her own.

Aridane · 16/05/2018 19:10

Serena is brittle to the point of breaking

OP posts:
BG2015 · 16/05/2018 20:14

I just can't believe all these intelligent 'wives' just let all of this happen. I'm not religious at all, so maybe I'm missing the point of the Gilead and what it stands for.

Aridane · 16/05/2018 20:29

How does any dictatorship happen?

OP posts:
BG2015 · 16/05/2018 20:49

Aridane my thoughts exactly.

Maybe Serena didn't realise what was actually going to happen.

But no print, no reading, no school?

Battleax · 16/05/2018 20:59

As much as she desperately wants a baby, she is way too intelligent for all this fakery. She knows the baby isn't hers, or even her husband's, and her faith will never overcome her intellect to convince her that it is.

We have double donor babies now, (which we didn’t have 30 odd years ago when Atwood conceived Gilead) and lots of parents are fine with that; It’s the deceit that will cause the issue not the genetics.

QuackPorridgeBacon · 16/05/2018 21:00

Praisebe See I’m usually the same. I can look at crime scene photos (black dahlia for example) and be fine, upset for them obviously but more curiosity than anything else. With THT I am also very curious and interested in what’s going to happen next, but I also have cried at parts and have gotten very angry at most scenes. I keep pausing it to rant at the other half about it. He’s seen one episode but I’ve managed to tell him everything that’s happened in detail and he could probably sit and watch it now and know enough to follow. I’m sure he enjoys my rants being the only male in the house and all Grin

TheBadgersMadeMeDoIt · 16/05/2018 21:16

Every episode has me sobbing now. Just seen episode 5 and was choked up for most of it. Something has to give soon, surely?

Praisebe · 16/05/2018 21:46

It's not even on Kodi yet Angry

MynameisJune · 16/05/2018 21:51

@praisebe I’m watching it on Terrerarium TV now, which is like Kodi.
