Fingers crossed it will soon be BBQ season - and as part of their #LidlSurprises campaign, the team at Lidl would love to hear about your surprising BBQ successes.

Lidl say "With BBQ season hopefully upon us soon, we'd love to hear from Mumsnetters with fabulous ideas for how to make your BBQ a summer sensation! We're really excited to be working with Mumsnet to promote the range of BBQ items available in Lidl - everything from salads, to meats and dessert ideas - but we know you probably have a genius idea up your sleeve to make even the most basic foods into a BBQ treat. Surprise us!"

So what's surprisingly good on the BBQ? Could be a fairly everyday dish that's even better grilled in the open air, or something that you'd never have thought of barbecuing until you tried it - or just a particular combination of ingredients that seem to sing when cooked on the BBQ?

What reaction did you get from the hungry hordes? Why were you surprised it worked - and would you try it again? Tell us how long you cooked it for, and if it's a bit complicated please do share the recipe. Any photos are VERY welcome!

Add your surprisingly good BBQ food below - savoury or sweet - and you'll be entered into a prize draw where 5 MNers will win each £50 of Lidl vouchers.

Please note your comments may be included on Lidl's pages on MN, their social media channels, and possibly elsewhere, so please only post if you're comfortable with this.

Thanks & good luck,

I always grill watermelon on my BBQ. Guest always look at me like I'm nuts but when I serve the watermelon, feta and mint salad they all rave about it. It is delicious!

Banana, covered in golden syrup, wrapped in foil and left to cook on the bbq while the first course is eaten. Mmmmmm!

ShatnersBassoon Fri 12-Jun-15 19:11:13

I like barbecued pineapple.

lilyloo Fri 12-Jun-15 20:32:26

It has to be king prawns and chorizo on skewers , they always get demolished first in our house.

PenguinsAreAce Fri 12-Jun-15 20:33:53

Whole salmon cooked in foil. Mmmmmm.

For BBQs I always do baked mini new potatoes - either just with coarse sea salt or chilli flakes. Everyone loves them and they are so easy to do.

My other amazing thing is campfire cones - waffle ice cream cones stuffed with chocolate bits, marshmallows, strawberries or whatever else you fancy. Wrap in foil and put on the grill when not too hot.

Veg marinated in balsamic and olive oil

Corn on the cob - get corn on the cob that still has the husk, trim off any of the silk from the end, soak the ears of corn in salted water for an hour or more, cook on the grill, husks on, turning every 5 minutes or so, for 20 minutes, the husk should be well browned. When the husk is cool enough to handle peel back the husks and the silk, tie it off at the end for a built in handle, butter up the corn and enjoy!

Halloumi sliced and grilled on BBQ served with roasted vegetables ( pepers, onions, courgettes, ect..) Asparagus in foil is another firm favorite in our house. Or beetroot in foil with thyme and garlic, add feta last 5 minutes.

The camping BBQ breakfast: Hollow out a small loaf of fresh crusty bread or tiger bread, fill with cheese, sliced tomatoes and crack a couple of eggs on top. BBQ some bacon on the side and once the eggs are cooked through you can cut and serve it all up. It's like a smoky breakfast pizza. Yummy!

Salsa and bits to eat whilst the BBQ is cooking. It's my favourite recipe and everyone always raves about it....

Add finely diced onion and green pepper to tin chopped tomatoes, then stir in juice of a lime, couple of dashes vinegar, a finely chopped chili and loads of freshly chopped coriander. Leave covered in fridge for a few hours or preferably overnight, enjoy with chips, crudités as and crackers. Also complements some BBQ food perfectly..

I reckon that the frozen mini corn on the cobs bbq better than fresh
Mackerel is awesome bbqd
Field mushrooms grilled with a slice of dolcellate on top
Halloumi to put on a mediteranean salad and sprinkled with pomegranate seeds
Beetroot roasted in foil on the coals
Squash roasted with thyme always goes down well with the kids as do cherry tomato kebabs - 4-5 toms on a stick. Bit od olive oil and seasoning then pop on the grill. Yum.

Peel a banana, slice in half lengthways and sandwich the two pieces with chocolate in the middle and cover in foil then warm on the BBQ for a gorgeous dessert

coffeeisnectar Fri 12-Jun-15 21:25:17

Camembert! Leave in the box and sit it on top for 20 minutes until it's soft and warm then dip chunks of carrots, cucumber or celery in.

ThePhoenixRising Fri 12-Jun-15 21:30:01

Slice a potato in half, sandwich a slice of onion in the potato and wrap tightly in foil then cook through on the BBQ. Surprisingly yum.

Beer can chicken!

Open can of beer or cider, take a generous slurp. Sit can on baking tray. Shove chicken down over the can so it's standing upright. Put on barbeque with the lid down and leave to roast. Google for cooking times (not going to be responsible for poisoning MNetters!). Rip apart and serve with crusty bread and salad.

Asparagus wrapped in Parma ham

Sparkles23 Fri 12-Jun-15 21:59:02

Barbecued pineapple is so yummy.

Also chicken marinated in coke (full fat obv!) I don't eat meat but this is always really popular, I think the coke makes it really tender or something!

Stick of chocolate (usually Flake) in a banana (slit lenthways) - wrap in foil - cook over dying out bbq. Delicious! Everyone thinks so except DH, who hates banana! Great on campfires too

flamingtoaster Fri 12-Jun-15 22:21:08

Bananas cut in half with chocolate in the middle, wrapped in foil. Can also be done with mango or apricots.

ShoeJunkie Fri 12-Jun-15 23:06:31

Vegetable kebabs - courgette, cherry tomatoes, button mushrooms and onions threaded onto skewers and brushed with a little olive oil - yum!

halestone Fri 12-Jun-15 23:07:43

I always put loads of King Prawns on foil with the edges turned up and drown them in Lemon juice. I leave them on the BBQ until cooked and they are demolished in minutes.

I also love Halloumi done on BBQ.

ladygoingGaga Fri 12-Jun-15 23:25:49

Another one for banana slit lengthways, then slice a mars bar and insert it, wrap in foil and cook, amazing!
Also new potatoes, with garlic, like tiny baked potatoes, lush.

I marinate chicken thighs in a mango sauce before cooking, the sweetness and chargrilled is fantastic.

Eton mess is a great BBQ dessert. Easy to prepare but impressive, popular and seasonal!
Curry pastes make good meat marinades.
