Request: Posters should need to have been registered for 30 days before being able to post on FWR

Hello @mnhq

The regular posted on FWR are becoming very concerned over the large amount of transphobic posts that have been appearing from new members. This has happened a lot over the past week, I.e. Since Mumsnet has hit the news for allowing gender critical discussion.

Most of these posts appear at night when there is less-moderation around.

After a brief discussion, it has been suggested that a good way to handle this issue would be by allowing only users who have been registered for a minimum of 30 days to post there, similar to the 'sex' board.

We would like to hear your thoughts/ feedback on this idea. Smile

OP posts:
MangoesAndMatchsticks · 21/04/2018 16:54

As someone posting on a new account due to recent events I agree. I don't think it would prevent it all, but it would certainly prevent a massive amount. I hope that this is something MNHQ can look into asap.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 21/04/2018 16:58

I agree

grandplans · 21/04/2018 17:01

Why shouldn't new members come join the conversation?

By transphobic do you just mean gender critical? If so then it's nothing like the sex topic - you're effectively asking MN to limit new members with certain views - or have I missed something?

grandplans · 21/04/2018 17:05

Oh OK I see what the issue is now - it wasn't clear from the OP.

You're worried the people are trolls? That they're trying to discredit MN, right?

Isn't restricting new posters throwing the baby out with the bathwater though? What about genuine new posters?

MsGameandWatching · 21/04/2018 17:09

I don't agree. I think what's happening at the moment is doing more to show that the MN discussion around Trans Issues is not just an ocean of bigotry as is being claimed. They keep coming trying to Take MN On and every time have been swatted away with logic and good sense. Keep at it I say.

CrochetBelle · 21/04/2018 17:14

I think it would make more sense that MN actually pay for round-the-clock staff, rather than having times of the day/week which are well advertised to be a free-for-all.

SinkGirl · 21/04/2018 17:31

Sorry for the stupid question but is FWR an acronym for a specific board? I’ve seen the discussions on other boards in the feminism section but can’t see a board with a title with those initials

MangoesAndMatchsticks · 21/04/2018 17:36

Sinkgirl Feminism/ Women's Rights. It's all one board.

grandplans · 21/04/2018 17:42

I agree with this. This is the solution.

I agree with the proposal.

I also understand it's frustrating for people who have de-reg'd but it's not a long term thing.

The idea of 24/7 moderation is great in principle but I think people are deluded about the cost of providing this.

MN has to be financially viable.

They are already taking a stand here that may impact ad revenue.

Asking for a further hit, so you don't have to wait to post on FWR is imho unfair.

Many people may not have seen the trolling of FWR last night.

It was nasty.

Something needs to happen.

A delay on de-reg'd users vs keeping the space free of trolls and maintaining civil debate? I think if you felt strongly about this issue you'd agree.

Saucery · 21/04/2018 17:51

They’d probably just move to Chat or AIBU. Agree that moderation is the key to stamping on this.

DarthArts · 21/04/2018 17:54

I'm not sure they would move elsewhere tbh.

They are aiming for a specific audience.

Troll posts would just die a death by volume of other issues on AIBU/Chat.

Batteriesallgone · 21/04/2018 17:56

Agree

SparklyMagpie · 21/04/2018 17:58

Also agree

Weezol · 21/04/2018 18:09

Crochet Exactly. I have said this on a couple of the data leak threads and also before the breach here:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/site_stuff/3223397-Hours-when-MN-read-moderation-reports

Mumsnet is now too big to be relying on their customers to self police and protect the brand. All of The Night Watch (who are much appreciated, thank you NWBrew) are volunteers with limited access and powers.

MN is now turning over several million pounds a year and it really is time they invested in some paid overnight staff. The money is there, at least as far as this The Financial Times report is concerned.

ftalphaville.ft.com/2017/06/13/2190074/mumsnet-a-bootstrapped-british-success/

I love MN and am very grateful it provides the space to discuss feminism, but it's time for HQ to get some proper protocols and protections in place.

Agree - same as the sex topic

Mner · 21/04/2018 19:34

I support this idea maybe combined with having to post a set number of posts elsewhere

ALittleAubergine · 21/04/2018 20:10

Wouldn't it just turn fwr in to an echo chamber? Except that the discussion would probably just move to aibu or chat and probably get a wider variety of views but also lots of trolling.

Problematique · 21/04/2018 20:14

Agree, and a minimum number of other posts before you can write on FWR.

Mner · 21/04/2018 20:22

There are so many opinions in FWR already and the wider mumsnet, I don't see how it could be an echo chamber

DarthArts · 21/04/2018 20:28

The number of people that would qualify to post on FWR would hardly mean it's an echo chamber.

BrashCandicoot · 21/04/2018 22:46

I agree in principle that applying a similar rule as they have for posting in the sex topic is a good idea, my concern would be that it's "Mumsnet" as a whole that's being painted as a wretched hive of villainy, so they'll just post their transphobic screen grab attempts in chat/aibu and just continue that way. With the added "bonus" of risking the MNers who avoid FWR for their own reasons getting annoyed...

RivkaMumsnet · 21/04/2018 22:48

Hi there,

Thanks for all your thoughts about this on the thread so far, and also to everyone who has been in touch with us privately.

We've let the powers that be know about the proposal and will update as soon as we can.

In the meantime, we hope the discussion can continue.
