Request: Posters should need to have been registered for 30 days before being able to post on FWR

Hello @mnhq

The regular posted on FWR are becoming very concerned over the large amount of transphobic posts that have been appearing from new members. This has happened a lot over the past week, I.e. Since Mumsnet has hit the news for allowing gender critical discussion.

Most of these posts appear at night when there is less-moderation around.

After a brief discussion, it has been suggested that a good way to handle this issue would be by allowing only users who have been registered for a minimum of 30 days to post there, similar to the 'sex' board.

We would like to hear your thoughts/ feedback on this idea. Smile

The key to containing trolls is good, adequately staffed, informed moderation and policies. The mods don't seem to understand the different covert tactics of sealions and concern trolls that derail threads. This is a skill based issue where coercive control training could well assist in spotting the pattern of derailing and undermining posts not the one big aggro comment.

Ironically and sadly, this is exactly the same issue facing then police when they attend many DV incidents where the woman, the genuine victim, can look like the problem as she has been unrelentingly and unreasonably provoked and harassed over long periods, each incident in and of itself not looking particularly concerning to the untrained eye.

The modding policy and execution would do well to skill up to understand these covert methods of coercion that most trolls are now skilled in. They have refined their MO like all male abusers. Also understanding threats as in cyber security, but pertaining not only to network attacks which is what most cybersecurity focuses upon because "boys like that", but also understanding the threat profile i.e. stalkers an harassers in the form of trolls and abusers. Bedford University have expertise I understand in this area of cyberstalking and cyberharassment by stealth

womanformallyknownaswoman Thank you, thank you, thank you. I have been flogging around on this (much less eloquently) since before the breach. The utterly casual handling of this whole situation has left me somewhat shocked.

womanformallyknownaswoman · 24/04/2018 00:10

@Weezol - you're welcome. I admire your tenacity - it shines through. Keep up the good work :)

Yes I am shocked at the casual "userism" - i.e. taking their users' protection and data somewhat for granted and as a given, but without the appropriate self-reflection on what they are doing that is contributing to leaving many at risk, especially those with histories of male violence, where there will motivated individuals and organisations all too ready to kill and harm women online, as in real life.

Those aggressive males who abuse the transgender banner as a cover for their predatation being another motivated group - where the genuine transexuals are thrown under their bus so to speak.

Seems like mods and MN in general don't understand Cluster Bs and they really need to. These are the guys (mostly but not always) who harm others and know no limits. All abusers groom, using either charm or other disguises (good man, she's too sensitive, it was an accident) to disarm the unsuspecting public and target. These tactics are seen in abundance from the trolls on the FWR board plus, it would seem, in the actions of the recent stalker and data thief.

I'm short and Northern - tenacity comes fitted as standard.

It's, what, 8 years since I had any back office involvement on message boards. Those had maybe 15,000 registered members, protocols dated from 2000 ish and it got diddly from advertising. It was run on hope and gaffer tape from 2 laptops and a frankenserver. All the mods were volunteers.

None of our users were vulnerable in the way that some posters here are.

It's unbelievable that a company turning profits of over £2 million come nowhere close to it in terms of user value, basic knowledge, security and PR.

CuntinuousMingeprovement · 26/04/2018 20:31

Good idea OP.

CrochetBelle · 27/04/2018 08:08

Still no response about moderation?

Weezol · 27/04/2018 15:43

Given the incredibly randomised approach to moderating the AE threads, I don't think there are coherent strategies in place for every day things, never mind the sort if threat posed by the people @Womanformallyknownaswoman is referring to.

There has also been the 'Trusted Partner' mess which has caused problems for users. This demonstrates a company culture of failing to carry out due diligence on commercial partnerships as well as recruitment, leading to the hiring of a Trojan intern and the temporary legitimisation of scammers.

It's disappointing that we aren't getting a comprehensive response to questions on this.

TheNoseyProject · 27/04/2018 15:47

Would 24 hours work as an alternative. Just
Means that if people join on a ‘oh I’ll hsve a pop at mn’ troll-fun then they won’t be able to do it immediately and in the cold light of day it won’t seem so fun?

OlennasWimple · 03/05/2018 01:15

I'm in a different time zone to the UK, and what gets left to stand during my evening MN sessions (ie middle of the night UK time) is astounding compared to during the day. And stuff takes much much longer to be zapped. I agree that 24/7 modding is the answer (or at least part of the answer) but only properly trained mods who really understand what is going on

Weezol · 03/05/2018 11:37

@MNHQ You are being asked questions about this on multiple boards and threads. Do you care about your users at all? We are the people who bring in the advertising revenue.
