I think it is one of the most old fashioned, user-unfriendly site I've ever seen Shock.

We can't reply to a particular person; we can't particularly see if someone has asked us something and it's just messy.

Anyone else think the same Hmm

Nope. I like it as it is.

Report
FallingWithStyle · 30/08/2010 05:04

Nope!
It's simple, uncluttered and logical.
You post, next person posts and so on....
Want to see if someone is talking to you? Read the replies.
Want to reply to a particular person? Start you post with: ParticularPerson...
ParticularPerson will READ THE REPLIES and see that you have addressed them directly.
Simple, uncluttered and logical.
If you want fluff and spoon-feeding then you might want to try elsewhere rather than rocking up here and whining.
Would be like me going to Netmums (I assume thats where you've come from?) and bitching that it was too bright and sparkly and wouldn't it be so much better if each spangly, pastel-coloured post didn't take up half a frigging page.
If you dont like it, thats fine - move on. Dont hang about to whinge that its not quite to your liking.
WE like it.

Hmm There's nothing wring with it. You just read it and then write what you want and then read on. You can see if somebody has said something to you, with the power of reading.

In what way is it not user friendly? I think it's fine. I'd rather the Facebook Twitter hoo haa wasn't there, but that's it. And I have my settings so that there are no pages, just one long post for each thread.

I LIKE IT

Grin at 'the power of reading'

I also like it, I frequent other forums and find the additional crap all over every post.unnecessary and irritating.

Report
PositiveAttitude · 30/08/2010 07:58

Savoy - how do you get your settings to do that?
Some of my threads are like that and it is so much better, but generally I have all the pages and I give up reading through half the time!! Blush

It is not outdated. It is simply a different kind of message board.

Some are threaded. Some are stacked.

Some are so fully of sparkly crap you can't read the messages.

And you know, coming into someone's forum and saying they should change it to suit you is just as rude as coming into someone's house and telling them their furniture is ugly.

Quoting is not good etiquette, I think.

It tends to stifle discussion because people are reluctant to join in what appears to be a closed conversation.

Similar to threads titled "mooos, come over here". I dislike them too, just CAT a person fgs

If you want to direct a response to a specific poster there are other ways to do it.

Quotes take up waaaaaay too much page space too.

Mooos · 30/08/2010 09:14

Teet2072 what do you mean "coming into someone's forum"?!" WHO'S forum would that be then? Do you think it's yours? If we can't give opinions and suggestions then nothing ever changes - for better or worse.

I think it needs an edit feature..apart from that its ok ...it is quite old old fashioned compared to a lot of forums though I agree

Report
ethelina · 30/08/2010 09:20

I like it it suits me.

Report
werewolf · 30/08/2010 09:20

I like it. Clean and logical. I can't be bothered to read those boards where you have to make an effort to winkle out the replies.

Of course I preferred it when it was full screen width..

Hello PA - Click on Customise under the Mumsnet Talk header, scroll down a bit to other options, change messages per page to Unlimited. Makes it a lot easier to keep up with long threads.

It is lovely and soothing, I belong to several other forums (not parenting ones, specialist things) and the smaltzy, tickery, glityery, quotey crap makes my teeth itch.

Agree though, that an edit wouldn't go amiss and would stop mw looking like such a twat somethimes with my appalling typos.

Report
Rockbird · 30/08/2010 09:25

It doesn't need an edit feature, you'd have people going back and changing what they said so nothing would make sense.

The only thing that I think we need is the op's name highlighted in a thread. It's a pain in the arse on a phone to have to scroll back up to see who the op was.

I like it the way it is. in fact I am so averse to change I am still in "MN Classic".Grin

No need to have a way to specifically answer to 1 poster, what is bolding for otherwise! [granny emoticon]

Report
MollysChambers · 30/08/2010 09:25

I like the simplicity of it actually.

Report
savoycabbage · 30/08/2010 09:26

Yes, like MrsDinky says. It is much better when it's all on one page.

Report
usualsuspect · 30/08/2010 09:27

You can have time limit edits ..they seem to work fine on other forums

Report
PositiveAttitude · 30/08/2010 09:31

Thanks MrsD and HIGrin Done it and will go and see if it works.....

The reason it has stayed as it is for so long is that every time they have tried to update it, there has been a massive adverse reaction. Personally I like the fact that MNHQ are willing to listen to their members and not just impose change upon them.

Threaded message boards do make it easier to reply to a particular point, particularly if some time has passed since it was made, but they also make it less easy to follow the thread as a whole, rather than having to follow a subthread to its conclusion & then try to pick up the main theme where you left off. One of the attractions of MN for me is how threads often take on a life of their own with digressions being introduced into the main thread as people react to particular points in a previous post, rather than being shunted off into a separate subthread.

I also suspect that threaded discussions would give rise to even more cries of 'clique' if people replied to a particular post by a friend, rather than to the OP.

no, no, no, no. the lay out is incredibly easy to read and follow. i like the "last post first" style. i just don't see how its "user-unfriendly" at all. Ive tried a few other sites and all the fannying around with tickers, picture, pm boxes put me off. they are unnecessary and ridiculous.the majority of users like mn the way it is, those who don't... well noone's forcing you to use it.

There are a few things that would be helpful. I would like to be able to quote another person's post. I know I can do it by hand, but much better to have it as a single click with the timestamp.

Of modern bulletin boards, the administrators do not have to give the full range of mods to everyone, so tickers are not inevitable.

Report
ethelina · 30/08/2010 09:38

Mooos if you really would like to suggest a change why didn't you start your thread with a question asking what if we did x or y instead and asking for constructive critiscism? Coming in all aggressive about what you don't like is guaranteed to piss people off.
