good thread title ts. Very apt as we have trotted up north and then we trotted to France and then we trotted home. Since we got back ds has been ill - temperature the last few days, much upset, sickness and general grottiness. No real improvement today unfortunately.

Morning all.

Hi sambo good to hear from you, I was wondering where you were on the last thread. Sympathies for grotty DS - mine also has something going on that we are a bit about. He hardly slept at all last night, totally wired, glazed look, was running a bit of a temperature and didn't know what to do with himself. Seems a bit better today after two doses of Calpol through the night, but still not really himself. I'm worried it might be the heat - we were outside all afternoon yesterday, in the shade but still it was boiling - but it could also be his teeth, a bit of post-nursery upset, the rotten cold that I've got...spin the wheel, really. Not sure what to do for the best - gp's is shut all weekend naturally - so we're just going to watch him closely and see what happens.

Probably not the best day for a trip to Ikea but hey ho!

Report
cyteen · 30/05/2009 10:39

Hmmm, temp of 39.6. Ikea is off the cards, we are waiting for a callback from an NHS Direct doctor.

DS is in my lap, feeding - it's like holding a hot water bottle

Hi All

We ahd a lovely day yesterday at the Bath and West Show and came home with a touch of sunburn.

I saw the consultant today and it's not that great. I need a massive does of the medication I am on. It is not safe to BF DD whilst on the huge doses so have to move her to bottles and formula by Monday, I have cried and sobbed over this but know it is best for her. So we have bought a variety of bottles and a few different formulae. Now what do I do? How many bottles should she have? how much in each bottle? I haven't the foggiest. I tried DD on a little formula in a TT bottle and she played with it and drank nothing then started mouthing my t-shirt for a breastfeed. I'm off to cry a bit more and hope the stopping feeding doesn't hurt too much.

Sorry that was a very self pitying e-mail!

Oops it's going to be alright. {{hugs}}

Here's what I can contribute to your formula feeding journey. Variety can confuse. Pick one style bottle and nipple that works best for you. Poppy will learn to use it. She's 9 months now so she'll only need to use it for 3 more months really. That's why limiting things to one is going to be best.

Formula comes is so many different types and flavors. With Reese we went 360 degrees. Today she is drinking the very same formula we gave her immediately after she arrived into this crazy world. We pay top dollar but it's a short term investment. You probably don't have the brand but it's Similac Advanced. We use the premade liquid that comes in 8oz individual servings. At any one feed Reese will take 4oz to 8oz. Feedings total 6 a day. Her larger feeds are at night (during the night) which I believe is because we are feeding her more real foods (2 to 3 servings) throughout the day.

Persistants and Positivity is KEY. You've done so well with her. She'll understand and move into this new way of feeding like a champ.....because she LOVES her Mummy!!

oh lovely oops. I can feel your pain. But well done x milliosn for doing it this long and only giving up cos you have to.

ok.

How many bfs are you currently giving?

I think at this age my dd was on 3-4 ffs a day. She was a gannet and was having 9oz a go - it only reduced when we moved to a beaker at 12mo.

I agree with twlight - stick to one bottle. we use tomme tippee ones for ds when he has a bottle occasionally and they seem ok. I used avent with dd (wholly ff by 6 months) and they were fine. I personally prefer the shape of the tt ones lol.

Maybe give Buckets a shout. I have a mobile number for her (not sure if it is current) if you want to drop her a text.

Also when ds was having a ff at bedtime we were using the ready made cartons but if it was more than one feed a day i'd be using powder. I gather than the taste can vary a wee bit, but nothing much, but if little P is feeling sensitive to the taste try and stick to one or the other.

Lots of love to you and P as you wind this down and I hope it isn;t too painful in either sense.

Oops you poor thing.
The sudden part of it is hard for both of you.

When DD has had formula when I've been teaching she has had the aptamil with the avent teats. They are much nicer than the ones we had 6 years ago which were much more rigid.

I know a lot of people swear by the Tommee Tippee ones.

Can you post on the bf threads to get help from Tiktok and co ... I have a feeling there is a homeopathic remedy you can take to slow down the milk supply problem.

And congratulations on the success you have made of feeding DD to this point. It is a wonderful achievement!

Heh I was going to say more but was interrupted by DS calling from upstairs. The poor duck has been really poorly today: fever, obvious teething pain, plus what I think is a bit of post-nursery clinginess. We ended up going to the emergency GP clinic near A&E and seeing a rude, disinterested doctor who prescribed anti-bs and eardrops in between giving us attitude. Then went to Ikea anyway on the grounds that it's cool in the car (lovely air con) and DS would get some much-needed sleep. He did, but despite being clearly worn out he just can't settle in bed so is hanging out with us in the lounge

Ramble ramble Hi to everyone, hope you've all had better days than us!

Hello all

Lovely shiney thread ts... France for us in about 6 weeks time, hooray!

Sorry to hear about the poorly babes and *cyteen& about the doctor you saw. Rubbish.

oops, must be difficult having to switch like that, but cyteen is absolutely right. We use tommee tippee as well, and aptimil formula - she has 3-4 bottles a day, I make up 8oz but often she doesn't completely finish them.

redlentil, love your new (well, new to me anyway) James Bond look. I had to do some detective work to find out who you were

to everyone, I am sitting outside, beer in hand, loving this gorgeous weather

Report
RedLentil · 30/05/2009 20:38

That first really high temp is a very frightening thing to deal with Cyteen. Grumpy docs are no good when you are genuinely anxious and need support in making decisions.

Oops - DD's grown-up self will be livid with you if you don't do what is right for your health, just as you would be with your own mum.

She will cry of course over the next few days and that will be heart-breaking for you. She will do her best to persuade you that the world is ending because one of the familiar things in her life is changing.

All of us would get upset at losing a source of comfort (look at TS's reaction to her ailing laptop)

Try to hold on to the fact that it is you yourself, your voice, your way of holding her (and DH's) and the smells and sounds of home that offer her the vast majority of her security at this age.

Tis easier to be calm about temperatures and weaning and all the other stuff from the perspective of dealing with a third child. Not because you are less traumatised by what upsets them, but because you are more confident that your presence alone at times of crisis is enough to see them through their upsets.

How did bedtime go tonight?

Ello Ataraxis.

Lovely to hear from you.

I must put the littlest small here into her cot, so that she can wake up and demand promotion to our bed later.

hotterpotter · 30/05/2009 20:47

Hello Ataraxis your beer sounds yummy

Cyteen hope the anti-b's kick in quick and DS is soon back to his normal self I have had horrendous fluey feeling last couple of days, hot sweats dizzy feeling sick etc (wondered if it was swine flu) but has softened into a normal cold today thank goodness. DS has a gooey cough and is a bit hot, it's not too bad, just means he needs a few extra mummy cuddles

Oops how awful to be worrying about your own health and feeding DD too . Another vote here for tommee tippee (despite the shite name), or you could just give it to her in a sippy cup if she's used to those for water already. Do you know how long you will be on the meds? Is there a chance you could express a bit to keep your supply then re-establish feeding afterwards. I must confess I was amazed how long I continued to lactate after DD stopped feeding, for at least six months after I could get a few drops out just by squeezing so chin up chuck

DH gone to Leeds tonight to see The Damned play so I am all alone He texted to say he arrived safely and that everyone there was over 35

Oops do you absolutely have to start the medication on Monday? Could they give you a few days to wean DD a bit more gently?
