Charlie Gard 12

This is a thread following the legal and ethical questions raised by the recent court case involving Charlie Gard.

Please could we refrain from insulting or otherwise "bashing" his parents. It isn't in the spirit of Mumsnet and will get the threads removed.

Please could we also remember that at the heart of this case is a terminally ill baby and his heartbroken parents. There are those participating in and watching this thread for whom these issues are painful. Please let's try and be mindful of them when we post. This isn't a place for name calling or trivialising the very real pain they feel. Many parents of severely disabled children are on here.

Lastly, here are some hopefully useful reference points of facts surrounding the case.

Question du jour: is the US citizenship fake news?

muckypup73 · 19/07/2017 12:05

BubblesBuddy, I have not saw the Telegraph, piece.

What a farce the is turning into :(

GabsAlot · 19/07/2017 12:06

thanks mucky

terrible journalism going on posters saying well done to connie and hop it all works

its ridiculous

BeyondDrinksAndKnowsThings · 19/07/2017 12:06

My interpretation was that the real (and verified) senator account retweeted that about citizenship from a different (unverified) account

reallyanotherone · 19/07/2017 12:06

Also why are the news reports firmly laying the blame on gosh?

"Us expert fails to convince gosh"
"5 hour meeting does not change Gosh opinion"
Etc..

Surely the clinical facts are being reviewed by both gosh and the us/italian experts, but it is the court they need to convince, as that is who makes the decision.

Sick of the GOSH bashing from all sides.

The lighting in blue thing really does annoy me. One thing that would really help Charlie Gard is people being honest. Some people on the CA side seem to think that if they can persuade enough people, even by using lies, then this will help Charlie Gard. It won't. But it will entrench his parents more into a position where they think that with enough belief this will give them their child riding a bicycle. I'm amazed anyone wouldn't be able to see how harmful this is.

I think people are more than justified to post with distaste at the use of misinformation "to help Charlie". Especially since when this is questioned the response is an attack.

However, there was an uptick on the last thread of subtle and not so subtle jibes against CA and the parents. My impression is that in the absence of news some posters were looking for "eye-catching" stuff. I hope this thread will be more temperate. But that applies to both sides including those joining the thread just to stir up a fight over "people being mean".

This series of threads is still the best general and open discussion about this story on the Internet.

BubblesBuddy · 19/07/2017 12:09

The Telegraph piece suggested that GOSH has not changed their minds after the meetings and examination by Dr Hirano. It makes more sensible reading that the rubbish currently reported on this thread.

The court is due to resume on 24/25 July. The compexity of this takes time to digest and the barristers will need to be advsing their clients regarding how they wish to proceed.

oakleaffy · 19/07/2017 12:10

Are all these journos just copying each other blindly?..or isit actually true about citizenship?
I thought one had to get ''residency'' first?..

LapinR0se · 19/07/2017 12:11

Of course, all we can do now is share what is being reported in the mainstream media.
Latest of which is the citizenship story.

zeezeek · 19/07/2017 12:11

After being sucked into the Sun comments on FB last night (I was away from home and bored so using that as an excuse for the inexcusable) what I am finding concerning from some of those posts is this stance that "as a parent" one would do the same, and that anyone disagreeing isn't a parent. That is incredibly insulting to both parents and non-parents and seems to be excusing the polarisation of people into parent= good and non-parent=murderer.

in reply she posted an Italian newspaper article about Charlie which had a photograph which was lifted directly from Autism Awareness day

That was probably the local newspapers fault. I have found other blue fountain photos accompany the "light up the fountain for Charlie" news stories. No idea if they too are stock photos from Autism awareness, or from other occasions when the fountain lit up blue, or actually from the lighting up for Charlie.

It could be that decent professional photos of the blue lights for this specific issue are thin on the ground compared to stock photos from other events.

Lights are already in place (on anything old or pretty enough, fecking everywhere) , coloured filters to hand. So v. cheap to do. Event specific professional photographer...perhaps not so much.

There is not the level of hoo har (so far) over here the blue lights and hashtag signs would suggest. With possible low turn out and perhaps it being in the main an act of a certain amount of appeasement of individuals with religious/political pull.. there may not have been the motivation to take genuine, high quality images. So Autism Awareness ones could have been subbed in by reporters and ascribed to a more recent event.

As we have discovered, journalistic standards might not be at the level they were assumed to be. Can see where that would spill over to bylines on photos.

I meant to post this last night. But forgot.

muckypup73 · 19/07/2017 12:13

GabsAlot, can you imagine Connie is curentl gagged and if she has been denied the treatment for charlie, how it would be making her feel?? all the comments coming from Ca. the ones that are saying fighting, and all the news reportys??? it would be shredding her to bits.

BubblesBuddy · 19/07/2017 12:13

If the report is true about GOSH, their barrister will put that argument forward in court. The Judge will have read and digested the evidence from the medical meetings. The case is not about citizenship, is it? I believe that is a separate issue. However, it does mean the parents are just as reluctant as ever to see the GOSH point of view.

oakleaffy · 19/07/2017 12:14

Ah..looked at Indy page, they are covering their backs by saying ''Charlie Guard has reportedly been granted citizenship''

So what implications does this have?

Can the USA insist that Charlie be moved??? sounds dreadful if so...the child is but a pawn now in a political power struggle.

muckypup73 · 19/07/2017 12:14

BubblesBuddy, thanks, I will go look and see if I can find it.

This Fortenberry appears to be yet another pro-life, ultra-right fundamentalist. Probably has links with Pastor and his pals and the tow congressmen who put forward the bill AcrossthePond has told us about. Why he tweeted what he did is beyond me to understand. Maybe misheard something and keen to be the first to share 'good news' with the world. Who knows?

BBC still has nothing on it. I might contact the DM and ask them why they appear to be not fact-checking.

BubblesBuddy · 19/07/2017 12:22

The Independent quite clearly says "it is reported that....". In other words they are reporting what they have seen elsewhere. That is not the same as fact. It is perfectly acceptable for them to do that.

WeDoNotSow · 19/07/2017 12:26

It's all just 'click-bait-y'headlines.
The standard of journalism nowadays is absolutely shocking!
