Why do you complain about migrants working? Especially when your preceding complaint was that they didn't have a job before they arrived. If they didn't take "British jobs" they couldn't support themselves andcontribute. What is a "British job"anyway?

I note you missed the 'not statistically significant' bit off most of your figures.
i'm so fed up of this anti-immigration bullshit; i welcome every single one of them to the UK.

EU immigration is a good thing. I don't know any immigrants who don't work and contribute to the uk via tax.

The underclass in the uk who have never and will never work aren't going to suddenly decide to!

Palehorse the ONS may say it is not significant but 630,000 in 1 year (equivalent to 6 million a decade) is high

Interestingly I spent last night in A&E.

We had 2 ambulance crews, 4 people. 2 were Australian, one was Irish and one was British.

When we got to the hospital, the nurse looking after my mum was Spanish, and because of where we were situated we could hear the reception area and very few of the staff had "British" accents.

I have no idea why there were more foreign staff than Brits but I did find it interesting, and I have to say we had absolutely no complaints about any of the treatment received.

If we didn't have immigrants/economic migrants then I think the UK would grind to a halt.

What do you mean 'British jobs' OP? Hmm What an utterly racist comment. I am an EU immigrant, have lived and worked in the UK for a very long time and have competed against British candidates on various occasions for jobs and scholarships and won them on merit. For that I will always be grateful for the rules of this country, things feel generally very fair, the best candidate gets the job despite their nationality. Your comments are racist and divisive and thank goodness most people don't think this way. If you moved to another country (and you may never need to, but you have to consider that the people that move here do need to--or want to, which is also legitimate) you would hope that you would be able to get a job honourably, on the basis of merit, not gender / nationality or anything else!

and 300,000 people left. You're deliberately trying to be a GIF (goady immigration fucker) by using words like gigantic, British Jobs and British Workers

See if anyone at any place I worked used such terms ('British workers / British jobs') they world unequivocally be considered racist and that would be correct, they would be racist. I'm originally from another European country and I would say 100% the same there, if people from other countries came to settle and contribute in the country I grew up in, I wouldn't dream of talking about (that country's) jobs!!

It worries me OP. I don't know why people are happy about those figures.

42% of EU immigrants did not have a job when coming to the UK

This is surprisingly low, IME. I didn't have a job when I moved from UK to EU country because its quite hard to apply from abroad, but I got one straight away once I arrived and started paying taxes. It is impressive that so many are employed before coming.

The term "stealing British jobs" always makes me Hmm This is really lazy as I'm now C&P from a facebook post but:

"They're either starting their own businesses (in which case they're actually creating jobs), or they're skilled labourers taking jobs there just aren't enough trained British people to take (such as doctors or surgeons), or they're unskilled labourers taking the jobs that you don't want (like toilet cleaning or washing dishes). If an immigrant with no contacts, no skills and no local knowledge of the language and/or culture can steal your job, maybe, just maybe, you're shit at your job."

Because they're spun to fuel xenophobia.

Eg "immigration from Bulgaria and Romania tripled" - so? Thrice not very much is still not very much.

"42% did not have a job before they arrived" - well, because they found it most likely straight after arrival and will have supported themselves until then anyway to no cost to the British taxpayer (and wouldn't be entitled to any support anyway) So why mention it? Unless you're headhunted, it's difficult to find a job without being physically there.

I thought immigrants had to have a job lined up to immigrate to the UK. Is that not correct? I thought that's what David Blunkett said on the Today programme this morning, but I assume I misunderstood then.

Motheroffourdragons · 26/05/2016 11:37

Oh we are back to the immigration debate.
I am so bored with this.

It is xenophobic nonsense.

Report
Palehorse · 26/05/2016 11:38

I assume Blunkett is talking about migrants from outside the EU, of which there were only 60,000ish I think?

Report
WidowWadman · 26/05/2016 11:40

Throughthick - not true for EU citizens, as they can exercise treaty rights to live and find work anywhere within member states. (You are only deemed to exercise treaty rights if you are either working or have proof of being self sufficient, though: a period of unemployment would not count into the qualifying period for obtaining citizenship.

Report
ThroughThickAndThin01 · 26/05/2016 11:42

It definitely was about the EU, because it was about the new EU members which came in under Blunketts watch, would that have been around 2005? I'll have to relisten to it, I should have paid more attention!

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 26/05/2016 11:45

Ok then widow I stand corrected. But I don't think its something not to worry about.

Depressing thought that our low-skilled and unskilled are condemned to the scrapheap forever, with comments like this If an immigrant with no contacts, no skills and no local knowledge of the language and/or culture can steal your job, maybe, just maybe, you're shit at your job.

Big business is very happy with unlimited immigration, because it keeps wages low and working conditions poor.

Population increasing by 1 million every 3 years due to immigration alone - that's very bad news for the environment. Where will all the extra people live?

What is important is the long term trend rather than the figures for one year. The interesting points are the number of immigrants has flatlined & fewer people have emigrated. In the past the number of immigrants has tailed off after following years when immigration has been high.

The other thing is the impact of measures intended to reduce immigration yet to take effect such as immigrants having to leave the country if they earn less than £35k after 5 years, & reform to benefits if we stay in the EU

Why as soon as someone says immigration is a problem does everyone start calling them racists or xenophobic.

I'm getting the opinion that the lower class who struggle to get jobs, housing, benefits are fed up with someone from another country being given them things.

However if you are middle or high class your ok well educated, private medical, own your home, or have a good job then you seem to be ok

It's not racist! To say we have a immigration problem!

It's however a myth and a lie to claim that people can just rock up here and "be given them things".
