How did it go?
My DS found maths to be a bit different from what he has been practicing!!
How did it go for your boys?

my dS found maths challenging but as expected, was a tad rushed at the end, but still managed to complete.

Fingers crossed and good luck to all. Mine was rushed too. Could not work out the last sum hence just made a guess. Phew.😜

I hear the VR was quite tricky. Did your boys think that?

Report
mastfam · 12/01/2019 22:10

DS found VR easier compared to other papers.

English a bit weird? Reasoning quite easy but maths very challenging. Usually breezes maths exams but didn’t finish this one / guessed a couple at the end. What a process. Relieved it’s done. Worse for the parents than the kids I reckon !

Agreed Mastfam VR probably the more straight forward of the papers, albeit a lot of questions in such a limited time. My DS got close to the end and with last min left guessed the remaining few.

I'm glad everyone feels that way and I'm not alone. When do you reckon the first set of letters will go out? This one month is not going to be an easy one. 🤞🏼

Assuming it follows the same format as we had last year - it was the Friday following the exam for the interviews and then the Tuesday was the scholarship letters.. the no letters were the last week of January the yes letters came at the end of the first week of February.

The letter RGS handed out yesterday said that the final letters will be post out on Thursday 14th Feb. The scholarship letters (not that we are in the running at all for one of these!) will be sent out during the week of 21st Jan for the interview on 30th Jan. The other interviews are 22 Jan, 23 Jan, 25 Jan and 1st Feb. I'm trying not to think about it now!

Sorry off topic, does any of yours doing the exam for Witley King Edward's on Monday? Do you know what time is the start. Lost the paperwork as focusing on RGS. Thanks!

As King Edwards has boarders there may be someone there tonight who can help you

We did RGS on Saturday. DS said it was ‘fine’... on closer questioning: English was ‘easy’ (was not expecting multiple choice), VR was long but standard, Maths was long and last question hard (but Dr Cox had already told us that at open day). Interview was very low key it sounds like... a few generic questions and a short ‘debate’. So now the wait.... yikes.

Ah! The RGS thread! Have seen these on mumsnet every year and followed the agony/ectasy....and now its my turn! DS sat the exam on Saturday. He said the math was hard and there were a few very tricky questions...english seemed ok but I guess with multiple choice comprehensions you never really know how well they have done as easy to make silly mistakes. VR seems to have been quite straightforward....so its just the waiting now. He did KCS on Tuesday and said it was a lot easier which surprised me a bit ...... Does anyone know if the interviews are RGS are just for the 11+ candidates - I seem to remember reading in previous years they didn't recall 13+ candidates but you could get a "come back at 12+" letter in the post instead of a yes (which would be horrible - can't go through this again!)

We had the same feedback as you..RGS maths more challenging than KCS...I was also surprised! There is an Admissions supplement on the RGS website that shows the borderline interviews for 11+ only.. The 13+ borderline candidates get the 12+ invite instead..but not sure of the timing of that

DS sat KCS too found it to be the easiest of all the papers he's sat.
What I understand from the threads from past year first set of letters go out on the Thursday after the assessments. 🤞🏼some of us might have something before the weekend.

Is it just me or does your heart sink a little when they come out and tell you the math was "easy" (like for KCS)....all I'm thinking is that he's probably made loads of silly mistakes or missed the point! ....or worse still, it WAS easy and everyone found it easy so you have to get 100% to be in with a chance...or it will all come down to the English......or am I just overthinking it? Hate this process!!

Do RGS offer more places than they have? I’m fascinated to understand how they can know how many people will accept.

It's a job fit for a mathematician... I'm thinking they should be okay ;)

longtime lurker first time poster!

The whole process is painful, more so with RGS given the range of letter possibilities. Yesterday we received a call back for an 11+ maths interview for next Friday...not sure what to expect. Would hugely appreciate any hints/tips!
