Covid

If the government were honest about the next 4 months

They'd say that children are probably going to catch covid, there is nothing to stop this happening. Lots of families will probably catch it off their children, school staff will probably catch it off children too.

Education is going to be disrupted again if the above happens. No way around it. But it could be 'over' by November when the bad weather kicks in and older folk start getting ill as per usual circumstances. At that point booster vaccs could start.

It's definitely 'an approach', but not telling people that this is the plan is unfair. Do you think people have realised this yet? Or are the Emperor's new clothes still in view?

Why are you talking about booster vaccs like its normal? They said two jabs, all sweet. It's not though is it?

Another doom mongering thread....

How do you know that's the plan?

It's not doom mongering, it's fairly realistic - and actually quite 'positive' in that it (in theory) prevents the NHS being overwhelmed.

Sept - Nov it'll be younger folk who are ill, probably fewer people admitted to hospital, probably for less time. People are in this mix - ie going to work, children in school etc, will be able to make a sensible choice about avoiding older relatives if that's what they want to do.

Then Nov time, when normal winter stuff kicks in, there will be flu and so on like usual, but by boosting vaccs, they'd be able to reduce the number of older bods in hospital with covid. Again, reduces impact on the NHS.

They said two jabs, all sweet.

Doesn't matter what 'they said' - it's all still experimental. Immunity is waining in those who had early jabs. Israel as evidence.

Personal opinion but I think maybe 40% have realised the possibility (and it is only a possibility at the moment) and 60% haven’t.

I simply don’t see how schools can’t be disrupted. If school age children remain largely unvaccinated and there is no isolation of household contacts then a virus will do what viruses do. Given the speed/transmissibility of the delta variant I can’t see any other scenario playing out. It won’t take government policy to close schools, it will happen of its own accord when staffing/pupil numbers are low enough due to high numbers off sick.

I’m not sure what numbers PHE will classify as an actual outbreak in schools but I’m sure I’ve seen around 5 cases being the point they may recommend extra measures. I don’t know whether that’s applicable to a whole school or just one class though.

The plan definitely appears to be let it gently rip through the population. The government have mitigated as much as possible via vaccinations, but it is endemic, can't be eradicated so pretty much everyone will get it, repeatedly, forever.

It's depressing , but I am not sure what are viable alternative is. I presume the government is trying to dampen spread only for the aim of keeping services running.

How do you know that's the plan?

Isn't it obvious? Without any mitigating measures anywhere in society, 'everyone gets it' is the plan.

Why can't you just accept that we have to try and get these kids into a normal routine and life again. Your speculating and catastrophising. It's generally becoming really boring now.

Of course - I hope I put enough 'probably' and 'possibly' in the OP to emphasise that it's only a possibility - it's a big old gamble.

I'm speculating because that's what people do - they wonder how things will go. If it's boring then just scroll by.

No one said that, it was always a concern about vaccine efficacy for certain groups particularly with the emergence of variants.

Not a new concept, we offer 'flu boosters every year to certain groups

Or offices starting to suggest working from home again - it'll be specific to individual buildings/organisations.

No, me neither. I'm not saying it's a 'bad' option, just realistic. A gamble - but what other choice is there? I'm just wondering why the government isn't just honest about it.

Er I seem to remember lots of things being said, like jab the older generation, but then it trickled and trickled down the generations. Please don't say that wasn't said it was. Now look, they want to vaccinate healthy children.

Yes. But nothing the government is doing suggests otherwise. If you don't want to talk about this subject without just telling me how I'm thinking, or things I already know, then scroll on by.

Why will more children get sock now than before? We more availabe and more frequent testing, which should mean infected people are out of circulation much earlier.

I was under the impression right from early on, listening to various scientists on podcasts, that the booster jab was always a possibility. Much like people have the flu jab annually.

No it's not for a virus that's very mild to children.

Why will more children get sick now than before?

In school.
More transmissable variant (see July for examples)
No small/contained bubbles anymore.
No isolation of close contacts.
No notification to parents of cases in school.
No need for family members to isolate in an infected household.
No mitigation measures outside of school.
No mask wearing anywhere - public transport to school for eg.
More parents back at work places.

There are more.

What? Intelligent discussion of things that might happen to us over the next 4 months? OK, no worries, I'm sure those 'people' are very happy you're selflessly putting yourself out to condone 'behaviour' you consider unacceptable, but could easily just avoid seeing. I won't be engaging with you anymore. Have a nice day.

What I don't understand is that you trusted the government enough to take the vaccine I assume? But now you don't agree with their approach going into Autumn. I'm finding this so bizarre.

Why are boosters for 'flu totally different from boosters for coronavirus? It's exactly the same principle.
