How many hours a day does your baby spend breastfeeding (actually on the breast)? And how old are they?

CatsCantFlyFast Thu 26-Jan-17 07:38:52

My youngest is 3.5 months adjusted (5 months actual). She feeds for about ten mins at a time about 9 times in 24 hours

However my eldest was totally different. At a similar age she was feeding for 30 plus mins a time

Usually about 15-20 minutes, about 7-8 times a day. Occasionally though he'll be there for an hour. He's 8 weeks old.

Every baby is different imo. DS, 5-10 mins from birth to 18 mths. Around 9-10 times a day at the start and 2-3 by the end. DD, constant. Would have been attached to me 24 hrs a day if id let her. Every 40 mins at night for 30mins and hours at a time during the day. I was so worried about bfing DS after that, but he was so easy in comparison

Long time ago, but it stunned me at the time - oldest DS was a slow feeder and would feed 45 mins to an hour, 9/10/11 times a day, till about 3 months old. And even then, there' d be days when I would literally be feeding the whole time. He was also a shit sleeper.
DS2 would feed for about 10 mins a time, napped for 10 mins morning and evening, and went to sleep for the night ( bar night feeds) at 7.30.
Are you feeling you're spending too long on feeding?

icclemunchy Thu 26-Jan-17 07:53:12

10 mins or so anything from 5 to 50 times a day. She's 2

Why do you ask op, do you think your feeding too much?

5 minutes at a time, around 10 times a day. 12 weeks old.

A lot.

A lot is normal. If it's anything less than a lot all the time you are doing well smile

Mine fed a lot until weaning at 6 months when i could get a break by shoving a rice cake at them.

Just trying to get an idea of what's within the normal range and Google wasn't being terribly helpful. Sounds like there is a big range! Currently 6 weeks and averaging 9 hours a day, so definitely a lot but just about manageable.

Look at it in a more positive way, that's 9 hours sitting down snuggling your baby. I always think it's nature's way of making sure you rest a bit.
Need to make sure I remember this in a few months when I'm stuck feeding my 4th with a million other things to do.

My 6 week old is averaging about 5 hours a day. He takes 15—20 minutes per boob. Sometimes longer. Sometimes has one boob a feed, sometimes both.

If nature wanted me to rest, she'd let sleep, haha!

user1471451986 Thu 26-Jan-17 09:17:58

*let me sleep

sherazade Sat 04-Feb-17 21:19:35

My ten month old feeds for around 10 minutes each time - 5 on each side, probably around 4 a day and 2 a night so that's 60 min in total !

firsttimemum15 Sat 04-Feb-17 21:22:03

I had a 10 hour cluster feed one day. Not even joking

Do you know how to feed lying down? That was probably the best thing I learned in the early days. You won't sleep as such but you can doze and rest. Do it on a double bed, alone, with your back to the edge, then she won't roll off. More long term, you can convert most cots to a bedside cot and that works as a bed guard. It's not safe to have them in the middle if your partner's there.

Continuously, pretty much.
This is literally a full time job,eg 24/7 and no mistake.

ICJump Sat 04-Feb-17 21:38:19

I'd say 2-2/2 hours in 24 more if he's sick or cranky. DS is 2 years.

With Dd1, by 13 weeks about 7 times a day about 10 minutes at a time. That was when she started sleeping through

DD2 never went more than 2.5 hours without a feed (on average 2) until she was 6 months. She could easily feed for an hour. There was very little sleep.

I wouldn't pay any attention to ranges...I'd just ride it out!

I have an app that sums it up for me, I'm 22 days and 4-5 hours a day I feed , I do 10-12 feeds 20-40 mins each x
