I can't pronounce it Vi-o-let without sounding like I'm from Cornwall?

I say it as Vi-let (2 syllables) and wondered if that was an acceptable pronunciation?

Two syllables here in Australia.

Mumzypopz Sat 22-Apr-17 21:14:43

Vy o let.....It has an o. Why would you not pronounce it?

Squidgling Sat 22-Apr-17 21:17:43

I say vy-let, but the last syllable is not pronounced like the word let, more of a uh than eh sound if that makes sense? I struggle to write things phonetically.

DramaInPyjamas Sat 22-Apr-17 21:19:08

Vy - ah - lit

Vy-lut. I font pronounce 'violent' with three syllables either.

RoccoW14 Sat 22-Apr-17 21:38:10

I say: Vee-oh-le.. but I'm also Mrs Bucket (pronounced: boo-kay).

AndNowItIsSeven Sat 22-Apr-17 21:39:55

Vi let

EllaHen Sat 22-Apr-17 21:41:24

Same as you, Vi-let.

However, when I read it I pronounce all three syllables. Mind you I read Siobhan as Si-oh-ban when I'm reading. wink

Vio lut.

ShatnersBassoon Sat 22-Apr-17 21:46:14

Three syllables. I say violent with three syllables too. I'm nothing like West Country grin

DramaAlpaca Sat 22-Apr-17 21:46:39

I pronounce it with three syllables, but the middle one is hardly there at all.

ShatnersBassoon Sat 22-Apr-17 21:48:14

Yes, same here. The 'o' is separate from the 'i' but sort of runs into the 'let'.

wickedgamestoplay Sat 22-Apr-17 21:48:27

Vi let

Cineraria Sat 22-Apr-17 21:50:04

I think that it's having too much of a y sound on the end of the Vi that makes it sound a bit west country. I do three syllables but don't say Vi as Vahy if that makes sense, more like Vah-uh-lt.

Imstickingwiththisone Sat 22-Apr-17 21:50:40

I say Vi-let but the o in Vi-o-let is really subtle so i don't think it's a big deal

Alwayshungryforcrisps Sat 22-Apr-17 21:50:54

Vy-er-let from Manchester

Fauchelevent Sat 22-Apr-17 21:52:39

Like cineraria - vah-ah-let

AmysTiara Sat 22-Apr-17 21:53:25

Vi let

moonlightmile Sat 22-Apr-17 21:53:31

I pronounce it Vy-let

RoganJosh Sat 22-Apr-17 21:54:16

Vie lut - I think because the two I've known have been pronounced that way.

Sallylondon Sat 22-Apr-17 21:56:11

It's Vi-o-let. Same as vi-o-lin.
Violin isn't vi-lin, so why should Violet be Vi-let?

TurtleBay20 Sat 22-Apr-17 21:57:24

But I do say Vi-lin...
