To be totally put off running

gogojojo · 12/05/2021 22:11

I've recently started to get back into running - I used to run a lot before my youngest child was born but haven't for years now. I've been really enjoying it and was already feeling the benefits after just a couple of weeks though am still fairly overweight

However this evening I was out running and had slowed to a walk on a very steep hill when someone in a car drove past and opened the window and shouted run fatty run out of the window - they seemed to be a total stranger a youngish girl from what I could see

Now I am totally disheartened I don't think I could face going out running in public again might try to go very early in the morning when it's still dark but don't want to be seen - why would a stranger feel the need to do this

AIBU to stop running

Get a high vis bib with

FUCK OFF

On the back.

And keep on running.

MamaWeasel · 12/05/2021 22:14

You would be unreasonable to stop running when it will have an overall positive effect on you.

I don't know why some people are like this, but "the best revenge is a life well lived"....so bolster yourself up with a few inspirational quotes and get back out there Smile

shivawn · 12/05/2021 22:15

What an absolute bitch! That is not a normal person, most people will take zero notice of someone out for a run. I normally will silently cheer them on because I know there is no way I would have the motivation to do it. She's an immature little twat.

Feelingconfused2020 · 12/05/2021 22:16

Please keep running. The person who shouted this is an arsehole and probably hasn't got the stamina to run 500m. This has nothing to do with your weight and everything to do with their inadequacy. I've recently had to give up running due to repeated injury and I miss it terribly. I don't look like a runner but I loved running, I loved seeing the beautiful countryside, I loved exploring and I loved how I felt afterwards. It crushed my depression and made me a much happier healthier person. I wouldn't give that up for anyone.

Who cares what that random stranger said and how they made you feel, think about how running makes you feel. Don't lose something that brings you joy for someone who doesn't matter.

FrozenCucumberPresse · 12/05/2021 22:16

YANBU. It’s totally up to you, you wouldn’t be unreasonable to stop for any reason.

I love treadmill running but I would never ever run outdoors, it feels like you’re opening yourself up to so much shit. Lecherous comments and looks or verbal abuse. I’ve tried it before and just feel safe at all. Running while female is a heck of a lot more challenging with more aspects to consider.

Tickledtrout · 12/05/2021 22:17

It's a badge of honour. Do not let the bastards grind you down. Nobody who runs would say or do what she did. Her loss because you're a runner and runners are amongst the most supportive people I know. It's why I keep on keeping on despite age and knees urging me otherwiseWink.

flossletsfloss · 12/05/2021 22:17

Please don't stop running. Don't let something so positive be ruined by such a twat. It's all about their issues and nothing about you.

tonyharrisonboosh · 12/05/2021 22:18

The person that shouted at you is a pathetic, nasty waste of oxygen. Do you not let them put you off. They don't deserve the power.

Keep going and good on you for even giving it a go.

DaisyDreaming · 12/05/2021 22:19

Please don’t stop running. I would be devastated too if someone said that to me but F them, good for you for getting out there running. Please keep running and run in day light! I rarely ever notice the weight of people running but if I see someone who looks like they are struggling on their run all I think is ‘good for you, I admire your determination’. Keep going

HunterHearstHelmsley · 12/05/2021 22:19

Their opinion isn't relevant to you. If their hobby is shouting out of car windows at people they don't know then they don't deserve any of your thoughts.

If you enjoy running then run. I bloody hate running but I'd never let strangers bully me into giving it up.

PansyIvy · 12/05/2021 22:21

I’m so sorry this happened, what a nasty thing of someone to do.

I like the bib idea posted above.

Moaningkimono · 12/05/2021 22:21

Please don’t give up running! You are completely brilliant to be out exercising!
There are some horrible people in the world. But the vast majority are lovely and will be willing you on! Honestly I run, I’m crap at it. So slow, no technique, I walk the tough bits if I can’t be arsed! I go for miles! Once you’ve got through the pain barrier of being able to run for 15-20 mins without stopping the rewards are huge! Keep going! 👏

TravelDreamLife · 12/05/2021 22:21

A*sholes will always find the best way to hurt people for their own amusement. It's not about you.

Most of us are driving past thinking 'good for her, I should do that too'. So imagine 99% of us are thinking that & don't give the nasty people your time. They're not worth it.

sbhydrogen · 12/05/2021 22:21

I'd keep running. It's annoying, but they're just being dicks for the sake of being a dick.

MightNeedABiggerGlass · 12/05/2021 22:21

I love running, I'm shit and slow but I bloody love it - fuck 'em keep on running Grin

ExplodingCarrots · 12/05/2021 22:22

Please don't stop running ! Don't let that horrible girl get you down. I also had people hurl abuse at me when I started running . 'Run you fat bitch ' 'run fatty!' Now I have my headphones on quite loud so I block out everyone around me so if people are saying horrible things I'm none the wiser.

MaddieElla · 12/05/2021 22:22

Unfortunately this is the shit we have to put up with as women who dare to exercise outdoors.

It does not stop me running but I give them zero engagement. If they persist they get a death stare.

Do not let this stop you. Keep going. Smile

Flossie44 · 12/05/2021 22:23

Don’t give up!! She obviously has major issues and feels inadequate in some way!!
Weight doesn’t matter anyway, it’s about deeper rewards, including metal health benefits and overal health.
The jumped up bitch, obviously hasn’t faced those rewards just yet.
By carrying on running, you will have not let her win!!

littlepattilou · 12/05/2021 22:24

What a nasty fucking bitch she is! Hmm

Sadly, society is full of cunts like this.

@gogojojo PLEASE don't be put off running. People who are genuinely into fitness and health will look at you in admiration, for doing your best to get fitter.

I know this sounds super fucking patronising, so apologies in advance, but I saw an overweight woman last week (circa 19-20 stone,) on a bench outside the swimming pool. She had wet hair so she had just been swimming, and she was eating from a punnet of strawberries. And I thought 'aww, good for her. Eating healthy!'

To slag off someone's weight at anytime is nasty, but to do it when they're making a conscious effort to get fit is fucking vile.

HelpMeh · 12/05/2021 22:24

Can you run with headphones? I run but have no idea if anyone's ever shouted abuse at me cos I can't hear Grin

People are twats. Ignore and keep trotting.

Meme69 · 12/05/2021 22:24

Don't stop running. I wish I still could but an injury has forced a temporary stop. I often see larger people out running and the thing that I think is "well done you". When I was underweight I used to get people shout out the window at me that I was too skinny and my legs would snap. People can be arses. Well done for doing something good for you that you enjoy. Don't let arseholes get you down. Life is too short and I guarantee you more people think good on you, than look down on you

HelplessProcrastinator · 12/05/2021 22:26

Definitely don’t stop running if you enjoy it. I started last year and I’m a size 18 (finally doing something about that now but will never be slim). I am not aware of any negative comments but that could be because I have thumping dance and rock tracks on my headphones.

Kittykat93 · 12/05/2021 22:26

@JayAlfredPrufrock

Get a high vis bib with

This

Yep.

I have just started running. My husband and son run with me, but are much faster so they don't look like they are with me most of the time.
Funny how they don't comments, yet I have a chest starer, one man blocking the way, and sniggers from groups of people.

It is shit. Please do not stop though if you enjoy it. I'm sorry you experienced that Thanks

Retrievemysanity · 12/05/2021 22:27

Don’t be put off, some people are just knobs. You’re setting a great example to your kids as well as getting healthy, don’t let one person stop you.
