School leavers hoodie is wrong

We ordered a school leavers hoodie for our dd, at a cost of nearly £20.
The PTA were in charge all proceeds going to the school, we recently changed DD surname however old surnames is now a middle name.

So we asked for previous surname and new one to be on it so the kids in class would know who it was and it would have the new surname we legally have to use on too.

The front has the initials on and is correct, both surnames.

The back is completely wrong.

They've left out punctuation within her name, and it only includes her old surname.

The school are claiming it is the PTA's fault, PTA are claiming it is a data protection issue (although it was handed from 1 person to the next to another) and that they couldn't clarify names however we confirmed it via facebook and have screenshots, we are not the only one to have a child with an incorrect name on the hoodie.

The pta and school are refusing to recall the hoodies or communicate with us or update us. Yet they've updated another parent and told them the wrong name will be scraped off and the right one stuck on top (it will look shit).

AIBU to expect all hoodies to be recalled and corrected? Her friends will have the wrong name on.

Also we the leavers are wearing theirs but the children without correct named hoodies have had them taken and are left out. This is causing other kids to laugh at these pupils.
The pta member who royally f up, her child is blaming the parents for giving her mother the wrong spellings etc and is intimidating the kids.

The school arent touching the issue with a barge pole.

Do I have rights as a consumer?

Are all the PTA people volunteers?

So the front is personalised with her name correctly, and the back, her name is in presumably a list?

Honestly, I'd ask for a full refund, to keep the hoodie for free, and forget about it at this stage. Unless there's some story about her changing her name?

Getting the full whack replaced seems OTT, and I'm not sure GDPR goes as far to legal use of a name on a hoodie...

Thing is thy will have paid for these and won’t be able to claim a refund on it so the replacements will essentially be coming out of school/pta funds. If the name people know them by is on there I wouldn’t worry too much about the correction

Sheesh.... I can see where you're coming from but it's a huge ask for them to be recalled and changed.

Tricky one.

Nevermind, its not really a biggie, I think they will know who she is.

First world problem.

Yes they are. I don't believe that is an excuse though for getting it so wrong, plenty of volunteers are amazing in their roles.

If they couldn't cope with the pressure of typing names correctly into an email to the design company then they should have simplified the design or not bothered.

You’re making a mountain out of a molehill. If you recently changed your surname, everyone will know who she is. And they’ll have grown out of them in six months time anyway and they’ll lie in a drawer. Mistakes happen - a PTA VOLUNTEER will have spent hours of her (and I bet it was a woman) time coordinating these hoodies.

For £20 is it worth the hassle?
It will be on the floor of the wardrobe for 15 years, never worn.

You haven't paid for the right to change everyone's hoodie. I don't think her friends will be fussed that it's not got her new name on it

I see why you want it changed and would support getting one changed for your child but getting every single one recalled and reprinted is a huge and inconvenient ask.

yes, you're being ridiculous. What a massive waste of time & resources.

I'd ask for a refund of her own hoodie & leave it at that.

It REALLY doesn't matter that other kids have your daughters old name on their hoody. Ask for your daughter to have a new one printed if she's bothered by it.

If they'd just spelled someone's name wrong by accident would you expect a recall etc? No, you probably just laugh and make a joke of it. I think maybe you're overreacting because of whatever the reason behind the name change was.

It's a real shame for your daughter.

But who is going to pay for all these new hoodies?! The company who made them (rightly) don't have any responsibility if they were simply provided with a list.

Presuming PTA haven't marked them up, they're £20 a pop. How many kids in the year are we talking? Even 30 and that's £600.

I think accept the apology, maybe ask for your own daughter's hoodie to be corrected, but you'll just need to leave it there.

It's one of those things, an honest mistake probably, and really taking hundreds or thousands of pounds from the PTA to correct it would be ridiculous.

They are not going to recall it so I think you need to get over it. If it's right on he front I would just drop it now. As you have changed the name your daughter was known by the whole way through school kids probably wouldn't associate that name with her anyway.

YABU - to ask for the whole school’s hoodies to be recalled and redone is unreasonable. That’s a waste of precious funds for the school. Your child’s name is correct on the front of hers and everyone will know who she is. I think they could give you yours for free but I don’t think the school should be doing anything more.

YANBU to expect a new hoodie for your daughter - why should you pay for something that isn't how you ordered it?

I don't think you can insist on a total recall of hoodies.

I would expect them to supply me with a hoodie for my child with her own named spelled correctly on it. I don't think that's unreasonable.

lol, a first world problem indeed. Get over it. You are being far too precious. Kids will remember DD via social media not a cheap hoodie that they won't be seen dead in after a couple of weeks

Report
RedSkyAtNight · 21/06/2018 12:14

No one will notice it (except you).

No one will be wearing them after the end of the summer holidays.

It's really not worth the fuss (which will actually draw more attention to the mistake).

PrivateDoor · 21/06/2018 12:14

OP, have I got this right - the surname that she used all the way through is on there but her new name is't, is that correct? Surely that isn't the end of the world? Can you not see that it is OTT to insist that all hoodies are recalled over this and the PTA use their funds (which are parents money really that they have donated) taking that away from things that would benefit the children?

DD in Y7, last week the leavers hoody was presented to me along with other charity shop items. They move on!
(Not that anyone will want it so it's going back in the cupboard incase she ever has a nostalgic crisis!)

Yabu. No one else gives a shit about the name change.
Some poor volunteer has spent hours of their life sorting this out. Just suck it up.
