Or at least tell me if it's just me that when I look at the baby names boards and I'd say a good number of names I've never heard of and TBH I find some strange and wonder if it's a wind up? So I'm wondering if it's just me perhaps in my own little boring bubble?

Are you really asking people their names? Confused It's an anonymous site and people posting about unusual names risk outing themselves or other people..

I've had a good laugh at baby name sites and suggestions! The top ten for 16 was unreal or maybe I was looking in the wrong places?

Report
LouisevilleLlama · 31/03/2017 01:03

Livia that's why I said or general names of people around you I wasn't really expecting " hi I'm Kate" " hey it's Mary checking In" " daisy here" more that you know generally say more Shannon, Lucy Ben, Matt etc type names than say the more exotic Ines suggested in baby names

See looking there are most that I'm used to seeing in real life but in baby names in the first few threads I clicked on in baby names I saw these as names or suggested:

Ignatious
primrose
marietta
leontine
coralie
Wilhelmina
Thaddeus
Xanthe seems a favourite

Now I'm not trying to pass judgement on whether they are decent names or not at the end of the day it's personal taste but I can't say I've ever met someone named as such in real life.

Ignatious was on my list, DH said no.
primrose real old school so assume it came in on time same wave as Elsie and Ruby and Edith
coralie perhaps from the movie?
Xanthe really popular on my FB parents group for actual girls. And on Neighbors. I like

I know a young Primrose.

I know what you mean though, most of those OTT names on the boards would be ridiculously out of place where I live.

I live in the Southern USA and out of the 140 children in my DC's year at school there are no names as odd as the ones daily suggested on the Baby Names board.

That's cost we suggest there names we haven't the guts to use

I've often thought the same, but I just put it down to the fact that a lot of posters on MN seem to be described as Middle-Upper class whereas I am most definitely not therefore I just don't roll with the same crowds Wink

I've worked with kids for the last 16 years and I have never met anyone with the names on your list!

My social group generally consists of:
Noah

Ha, I reckon you"require right, MommaGee

A bit like when people say how they wouldn't put up with something, that they would have to say something. And I think to myself, yes you will, and no you won't. ..

Is this a thread where you aim to scoff at the names of the lower class?

Report
Dixiestamp · 31/03/2017 01:55

Hmm, a selection of children's names (primary aged) around here would be:
Boys:
Ben
James/Jamie
Charlie
Harry/Harri/Harrison
Tom/Thomas/Tomos
Ethan
Luke
William
Oliver /Ollie (very popular)
Josh
Alex
Cai

Girls:
Cora
Faith
Darcie
Seren
Nia
Elise/Ellie
Lily
Abbie
Lara/Lana
Maddie
Isabel
Chloe
Freya
NB this covers my DC and lots of their friends.

PS just to add it's a very working class 'valleys' area, and I think these names are pretty typical- and not necessarily what some people might associate with our area!

WomanScorned · 31/03/2017 01:58

I didn't get that impression from the OP, at all, Lionking1981

If that was OP'school intention, then she must be feeling very disappointed, as it's definitely not happening, here!

Firstly its you LinkIng who have bought "lower" class into it and secondly are you looking at the same list of names OP posted as me cost I don't know many Thaddeus or Wilhelmina on my council estate

Thaddeus? As in Judas Thaddeus? Shock

I haven't been brought up as a Christian but this is my only association with the name. It's a lot to live up to Grin

Small children around me are Freddie, Reggie, Oscar/Oskar, Kian, Riley, Jayden, Ralph, Dexter, Tamsin, Mabel, Clara, Elizabeth, Layla, Aria, Angel and Florence.

A real 'mixed bag'.

My peers, on the other hand are mostly called Nicola. Except for the odd Tracey, Claire, Jackie, Joanne or Louise. Care to guess my age, OP? Grin
