AIBU?

To think that cat owners that smoke don't realise how bad they smell?

I bought some cake decorating stuff (second hand) at the weekend and it stinks. I put it through the dishwasher and now that stinks too. Why don't people realise that having cats shitting in the kitchen is vile - and why are cat litter trays often in the kitchen? Would the bathroom not be more appropriate? Why mix cooking with the toxic stink of cat shit?

And in answer to all of the cat owners that will tell me that their cat/house doesn't smell, you're wrong, it does, and there's cat hair all over you. Smokers have no defence other that you probably can't smell how bad you are because you've knackered your tastebuds.

I am never going to buy another second hand thing unless it's from a 'smoke & pet free house'. Stinky fuckers.

Bathroom is possibly more appropriate but if I'm in there with the door shut, the cat can't get to the tray...

Sounds like your dishwasher needs a service at the very least.

YABU.

Don't generalise, I know smokers who don't smell, nor do their houses and my cat litter trays are in a spare bathroom (with the door slightly ajar so a cat can walk in) that only gets used once in a blue moon.

Sil has a cat and her house does not smell. My mum smokes her house does not smell - it is bloody freezing though because she keeps the doors and windows open!

I have a cat. My house doesn't smell and I'm not covered in cat hair. I also don't have a litter tray.

I think if your dishwasher is tainted after use then you probably need a better dishwasher Hmm

My cat doesn't have a litter tray. She likes to come and poo in your garden op.

There is no circumstance under which putting hard metal or plastic objects in a dishwasher should cause the dishwasher to take on the smell of those objects.

That's not how dishwashers work.

I have never known any cat owners house to smell to that extent. I've been in houses where it smells a bit cat pissy, presumably because the cat has been pissing everywhere but the litter tray though.

Was this person some kind of hoarder and therefore there were excessive amounts of cat poo lying around? Or are you particularly anxious about this stuff?

I have a cat. It probably makes the house smell of cat a bit. Who cares? The cat makes us happy, which seems rather more important. I actually feel quite sad when I read about people as uptight as you, OP - I know it's not your fault you're neurotic, but it must be so very joyless.

I don't give a hoot if my house smells of cats - no one has to come here, or buy anything from me.

If something smells, why buy it in the first place?

If buying online, why not ask if the item is "from a smoke and pet-free home" - fairly standard information for a seller to give?

No cat makes plastic or metal objects that they've presumably not used unless they're a cat prodigy stink. And your dishwasher is seriously dodgy if it stinks after use.

There's something wrong with your dishwasher.

I can't see how they made your dishwasher stink? I think you're being over the top, goady and exaggerating.

Surely if it smelled so bad that it tainted your dishwasher you could smell it before you bought it?

I've got two cats - one indoor and the other outdoor. My house doesn't smell like cat either.

My cats do however complain about the overwhelming reek of my DD's perfume! Alien anyone? Smile

Cat owners don't seem to be able to smell it - the same with smokers. It's foul, though.

If you walked into the house and saw cat hairs/smelt smoke and cat then saw litter trays in the kitchen why did you buy the stuff in the first place? Confused
