to be irritated by my 6yo dd receiving a valentine gift at school today?

Handed to her today by a boy in her class. It slightly embarrassed and confused her and we just think she's far too young. Her excellent school has drummed into the kids that there are no boyfriends for some time yet and she's a great little girl who clearly feels that she can't chat to us about it because it's not quite right. Both me and dh are cross. Feel free to tell us to lighten up.

Lighten up ffs.
What is the problem here, she is hardly being proposed to??

Lighten the fuck up

They're 6yrs old and it was a nice thought, even if it did make her slightly embarrassed.

She probably would have been slightly embarrassed too if it was a Birthday gift.

What exactly are you cross about?

Honestly? Lighten up. I think DD had four boyfriends in reception. (Not sure she's had one since...)

YABU I much prefer valentines day being about love and friendship rather than romantic love. My 4 year old dd wrote her friend a card because she loves her. Nothing weird about it IMO.

Oh for goodness sake. I'm disappointed that my 7 year old has got nothing so far this year. Lighten up.

I have 2 dds, 7 and 11. My oldest has exchanged "valentine gifts" with female friends. At primary age, I really think they are just a bit of an excuse to send little presents, nothing sexual or untoward about I time.
Some children love to give, in our case it was love heart sweets.
I am sure the little boy was just being friendly/affectionate.
No need for confusion, just focus on the fact her friend bought her a little present as he likes her.

Well, I hope the giver of the gift wasn't made to feel rubbish by this.

So you are both cross and your daughter feels she can't talk to you about it???
Good luck with that when she's a teenager!

I'd be more worried about the fact she feels she can't talk to you.

But yes lighten up

My kids made cards for their friends. My daughter is busy making cupcakes for us.

Why is school talking about boyfriends and girlfriends? That's ridiculous.

Catch. A. Grip.

He likes her and wants to be friends.

I'm assuming it wasn't a gimp mask and crotchless panties.

It's just a bit of fun.
TBH I'm surprised this is the first year. Since DD(5) started school there has been a lot of talk of who is marrying who and swapping from one day to the next. DD says she is happy to kiss any boy who wants to kiss her as long as he doesn't have snot. Glad she has some standards at least!

When I was that age I seem to remember fancying a boy in my class although I was too shy to do anything about it!

I think it's quite sweet and a normal developmental stage. It's not as if there's anything serious going on!

She can't chat to you and her dad because she knows it's not right?? She is 6!!! If she doesn't feel able to talk to you now, then there's no hope for when she gets older!!! You're taking the whole thing way too seriously, it's a bit of fun!!

So yes lighten up and YABU!!

Definitely lighten up! It's sweet. Would you be concerned if it was from a girl?

Far too young for what, exactly?

Report
Only1scoop · 13/02/2015 21:22

She senses you are 'cross' and its 'not quite right' she chooses not to talk about it....

Best of luck down the line when she wont talk about anything that you may think is 'not quite right'

Yabu
