AIBU?

AIBU to be irritated by this mum at DD's school? (Nativity play related)

DD is playing a star in the school nativity play (reception age) There are two other stars. When the letters were sent home to say who was playing what, DD's note stipulated that all she needed for her costume was yellow clothing and it suggested t-shirt and leggings. After trawling shops for a week for yellow arseing leggings, I finally found some today, along with a yellow top (harder than you might think in winter Angry)

Then at the school gate today, one of the other star mums said that she'd been to Tesco and bought a star costume for her DD. Now, I am annoyed for two reasons; 1. Her DD will look like the main star, the Beyonce of the stars and my my DD and the other girl will look like Kelly Rowland and the other one, and 2. DD is feeling hard done by that she has yellow clothes and a tinsel headband. I can see her point. I feel pressured to buy DD a star outfit now.

AIBU to think that the other mum is a show-off and a bit of a nob? It's a reception nativity play ffs. Just get the cheapo yellow clothes and stick some tinsel on yer kid's head.

Yes, I DO have bigger problems to worry about, yes I AM childish and I probably do need to suck it up. (Am a regular under a nc, by the way)

TBH it's probably cheaper to buy the star costume than the yellow clothes! Maybe she borrowed it from a friend? I don't think parents will think your child is that other one for Destiny's Child either! Panic not.

Stick to the yellow clothes,
children that age are far more comfy wearing familiar things ;)
The other mum must be lacking in the imagination department!
spend your energy helping your DD with her lines/songs instead & be snug on the day

I would hazard a guess that at about £5 the star costume was cheaper than the yellow top and leggings. Especially if you factor in all the trawling that you did.
I don't think that the other mum is a show off though-it hardly takes much effort to pick up a star outfit with your weekly shop.

Nip to Asda now...

YANBU, but this kind of crap happens all the time at school. Grow a very thick skin and grit your teeth. Don't conform to what the other Mummys do, or you'll be doing it for the next 12 years!

ds2 is also a star in his nativity play (one of 24 stars in fact) and we had to make the costume... i must say i was tempted to get the tesco one which would have been considerably easier and cheaper... luckily my dc all hate performances of that nature so tend to scull around the back looking murderous, so i am spared the whole competitive nativitying.

I only paid £3 for a yellow top from Primark (shoot me now) and I've just found some yellow tights on eBay for 99p (free delivery) The one that the pushy other mum bought was a tenner.

I am dithering between making DD a fabulous star outfit myself and then farting in the genral direction of stage school mama on the day, and sticking to my principles which is it's a reception age nativity, tinsel on the head is as snazzy as it should get.

I always did the trawling round shops to find correct colour clothing for DD1 (and its always something out of season) did less trawling for DS and now with DD2 go for the easy option (online) which is always cheaper (in money and time). This year was first ever with easy request that did not involve buying anything special

I think yabu really, maybe the mum just wanted her dd to look nice for the navity, in a proper costume? I probably would have done the same, and as people have said its 5 quid from asda so if you are that worried about it go and get the same one yourself

I wouldn't worry-it's a reception nativity, children wear all sorts. I brought ds a costume because it was £10 in fancy dress shop. It was cheaper than buyingas striped dressing gown and accessories. I suspect they suggested leggings and t.shirt as they thought some children may already have them so would save money, but I think if you're that bothered go and buy a 'star' costume. They sell them in tesco and asda I think

According to my stepmum there is always one parent who has to go one bigger and better than everyone else. Grin My sister and brother took part in their school production of "Austrailian 12 days of christmas" (A kookaburra in a gum tree, 4 surfers surfing etc etc) and one little girl turned up dressed in a Calvin Klein bikini to be one of 8 sunbathers. Her mum bought it especially Xmas Hmm and made a point of telling anyone who would listen that it was CK.

Anyway FWIW I'm sure I saw a star costume in Asda yesterday for about £8. Bet it was bloody hard finding yellow clothes in December! I take my hat off to you for that! Xmas Grin

YABU. Thank God DD only has pre-school nativity at the moment but if there's a costume to buy in Tesco I'm buying it, sorry. I am utter shite at costumes.

Arf at your DD being the Kelly Rowland of the nativity play.

I wouldn't worry too much. Who gives a shit who's the main star?

"Who gives a shit who's the main star?"

Mini Beyonce's mother, obviously.

worry not, the supermarket star will look out of place among the "yellow" stars, " black" sheep, "white" angels, "grey " donkeys and "brown" shepherds.

I got it sooo easy 2 years running. Last year boy was a bear and was asked to wear brown, this year he's a waiter and gets to wear school trews and white shirt ( uniform).

Why don't you sew onto the yellow t-shirt she's with me in large sparkly letters and a big arrow pointing to the showy star....

My son is a camel, my daughter was a kangaroo (dont ask). Im sure your dd will do fine and look lovely no matter what. My ds is apparently going to be dressed in brown being pulled on a lead by a wiseman, i dont want to be picky but i always imagined little angels in the nativity and what i have had so far is a kangaroo and a camel Grin. no matter i have three more daughters - one of them is BOUND to fulfil my angel dreams?

Not unreasonable, in my opinion.

The other mother probably didn't mean anything by it, and the kids probably won't mind/notice, but I'd be pissed off too.

Loving Kelly Rowland analogy.

plantsitter · 05/12/2011 19:48

If you do make her one, make it fabulous and make the other girl one too. So then Mini Beyonce will look like the other one.

I actually contemplated doing something sililar today Blush

DD is an angel and I have been asked to provide a white short sleeved t-shirt and a pair of white tights. Tights probably not too much of a problem but where on earth do you buy a plain white t-shirt for a 4 year old at this time of year?? Sainsburys have got a huge stock of angel costumes...

sloppyguiseppe · 05/12/2011 19:50

I am thinking of making one and incorporating some LED battery-operated lights into it...

But.....if the SCHOOL said to wear yellow clothing, why is one child in star costume Confused ? I think pushy mum's child is the thst will look out of place, but if OP goes and does likewise, she will spoil all the fun Grin

Report
LingDiLong · 05/12/2011 19:51

I think you have misread the situation. You have put loads of effort in to trawling the shops finding the exact specified yellow top/tights. The other mum has clearly had a half hearted look round thought, 'bollocks to trawling round finding a yellow top, I'll just buy this star costume'. Those Tesco star costumes are nothing special, DD has borrowed one in the past, she's basically going to look more pointy that's all.

I think you sound crazier and more pushy than the other mum to be brutally honest...

Report
Miette · 05/12/2011 19:53

It sounds like the Tesco costume was a lot easier to source than the yellow outfit. I'd probably buy the Tesco costume to wear on top of the yellow outfit to be honest. It won't cost much I shouldn't think.
