AIBU?

To cook spuds in goose fat for vegi BIL at xmas

I'd imagine most vegi's would think IABVU?

DH's family are with us for Christmas. They'll be 11 of us to cook for and BIL with obviously need something to replace the Turkey, no problem.
He'll also need separate gravy, hardly any bother.
I usually make a couple of stuffings and make sure one is meat free, again, no bother.
He also likes to have some vegi sausages to replace the pigs in blankets.

I like to do a good job with xmas dinner and I love doing the spuds in goose fat.
I ponder over this every time we have them for xmas. It's a PITA having to pretty much cook a separate vegi dinner alongside a traditional one, find space in the oven and get all the timings right.

Would it really hurt, for one day, if he was unknowingly more flexible?

The rest of the year when we see them, I just make something vegi for all of us, but this is xmas dinner and I like going to town a bit.

So;
a. Would he notice?
b. Would it be really, really bad?

Do two types of potatoes, point out the roasts are in goose fat. Where is the problem?

YABU
Get a bag of Aunt Bessies, they're veggie, chuck a few of those in a separate small dish.

Also depending on how long he has been veggie for you could make him very ill. My aunt accidentaly ate beef and vegetable gravy and her body seriously rejected it. Not nice.

Does he have to have roast? Give him boiled potatoes.

Shocking manners and utterly disrespectful to lie to him. Do as others have said, two types of potatoes, boiled or mashed and goose fat roasted. Hell, you can even do a jacket in the microwave and scoop out the inside, but don't lie to him.

It would be pretty bad, yes. Why not ask him if he'd mind? It must surely be no more complicated than making an extra stuffing for people who "have to" have suet in theirs... I'm a committed carnivore myself btw!

It might make him poorly.

Vegetarians stop producing the enzyme that allows them to digest meat. So he might end up having a very uncomfortable afternoon/evening.

I think you should just have a chat to him about it. I'm vegie too, and I wouldn't expect the person catering to go to that much trouble on my behalf. But I also would be very upset if they fooled me into eating something non-vegetarian. He will be used to these kinds of issues - just be upfront. At the end of the day, it's only potatoes - he can survive without them!

YABVVVVVVU

if you don't want to cook the different spuds, just get a packet of Aunt Bessies from the supermarket and bung them in.

why make two stuffings, though? just have one stuffing made veggie. noone will complain.

If its hassle, why not have some previously cooked spuds (in olive/veg oil) to warm up on day for his, think vegi would rather eat reheated food than food that is cooked in goose fat!

We had this exact same thread last year.

YABfuckingU and a complete bitch to be honest. If some cunt did this to me it would be the end of our friendship. Thankfully all my friends respect me too much to do something so low.

It's not his turkey substitute thats a problem. I usually make something beforehand and freeze it.

But as well as cooking that on the day, doing two stuffings, two lots of sausages and finding room for two lots of spuds?
I've done it before and tbh it is a pain.

I did ask SIL (his wife) one year if she thought he'd notice and didn't think he would. But I felt a bit guilty so didn't do it.
Now I'm pondering it yet again....

Goose fat is overrated for spuds anyway. Groundnut oil gives a much better crisp in my experience... or as grimma and nickel suggested, I'm sure he'll be happy with some aunt bessies.

reminds me of last xmas when I cooked for 12 people and my sil and her partner who are vegatarian pointed out just as I was serving the meal up that they could not have pots as they where cooked in goose fat (i had totally forgotton) they had a lovely veggie meal cooked for them and veggie gravy too.

Anyhow that was fine and I did not serve them any, and they then both proceeded to eat my sausage meat and turkey skin Shock

I was gobsmacked as obviously turkey skin and sausage meat are meat Hmm

I was well peed off Angry

Yes, you are BVU. My son is vegetarian - he'd rather go hungry! Just cook Auntie Bessie's in a separate tin!

YABU.

Just do him a baked potato and say "I've done the roasties in goose fat, so this is for you". You've gone to a lot of trouble doing other alternatives, I'm sure he'd be fine with this.

As a veggie, I do understand that it's a pain for meat-eaters to do lots of separate things and would appreciate the effort of veggie stuffing etc.

I would, however, be totally pissed off if someone intentionally gave me meat...

I think Eric thinks YABU!

I agree, it would be really disrespectful and shows that you're not that sensitive to his beliefs.

Would you do the same if it was your Brother/Sister etc?

I would get a small pyrex dish which can sit inside your big tray for roasties, cover it with tin foil and do that.
