Cheap Travelodge/Premier Inn type hotels in London

When we go to London for the theatre we go down on the train into Euston and usually stay in a Premier Inn or Travelodge somewhere centralish, Euston, Kings Cross, Southwark, Kensington etc.

This year we are going to The Barbican which is an area I've not been to before. I'm debating whether it is easier to stay near to there so as to get back to the hotel quickly and easily after the show, or whether we should stay somewhere closer to Euston which is where we will be heading to the next morning.

Any thoughts?

Dh used to stay in Easyhotels. He would not be able to now due to the bright orange colour scheme in the bedrooms (unless they have toned it down a lot). I don't think they do family rooms in any case.

It’s only 10mins on the tube so much of a muchness? If there’s a hotel you already know you like at Euston I’d do that.

Pre-covid we always went for hotel near the station so that they could save our luggage and we had the day in London. Now most are saying they aren't doing left luggage.

There's a travelodge near there from memory - you could stroll into Shoreditch and find a nice restaurant? I think nicer staying there than Euston tbh

We always use the premier inn at Putney Bridge, it’s right next to the tube and really cheap, easy enough to get to from Euston too

Z hotels all the way! I LOVE them. They are like posh premier inns - the same price but MUCH nicer. I'm not sure where the nearest to Euston is, but we have stayed at Fleet St, Gloucester Place and Old St. They're cheap as chips at the moment - we paid £60 for a King Rm on saturday night.

Just be careful though - the small rooms really are that - a bed and a tiny walkway along the side, and not always a window. Totally fine if you just need a bed for the night though. Bathrooms are always really nicely specced out, and everything is always pristine and spotlessly clean.

Gloucester Place is my favourite, because it's in several Georgian houses, so the rooms tend to be bigger, and it's a quiet road, so you get a great night's sleep.

Premier inn I think are doing luggage storage but not Travelodge. I have the premier inn booked for a couple of weekends for that very reason.

They are also really responsive on messenger. If you ping them with queries.

There are a couple of premier inns near Euston. You cant really go wrong with them. My mother is coming down this week and staying at one in Brixton. Tube takes around 20 mins to Euston. Although she chose thats as it is closer to me. There is a nice premier inn in Covent Garden. My sister stayed there and thought it was brill.

Premier Inn at Old St or Travelodge just off Bishopsgate - both a 10/15 min walk max from the Barbican

Old St to Euston via Northern Line. The Premier Inn is less than a 2 minute walk to Old St

Bishopsgate Travelodge is across the road from Liverpool St where you can get to to Euston Sq via multiple lines

Barbican to Putney Bridge looks a bit of a convoluted journey, especially at night. TFL planner says it takes over 50 mins.

I'm fairly sure that Z hotels are double beds only apart from a family room with bunk beds. As ds is 17 and dd is 19 we'd end up having to book 3 doubles which then starts to make it much more expensive than Premier.

I think Premier is winning over Travelodge due to th fact that Premier are at least doing served to your table breakfasts whereas Travelodge are grab boxes only.

Gotta love a Premier breakfast.

Actually I am sure there is a Premier Inn at Farringdon. Much nearer the Barbican and only one stop between Farringdon and Euston Sq

We will probably want to go into central London for a bit the next morning before getting our train home. So do we double back to collect our luggage from a hotel near the Barbican or stay closer to Euston is what I'm wondering?

Easy enough to get from Barbican back to Euston after whatever you’re going to by bus (straight up goswell road) or taxi. Tube doesn’t make as much sense for that journey. Addison Lee cheaper than black cab depending on what time of day.

Youth hostels really don't appeal. I'm sure they are very nice but London theatre trips are our alternative to going on holiday.

We've only ever done tube in London as I assumed taxi would be much more expensive but I'll bear that in mind, thanks.

In that case I would just stay in Premier Inn across the road from Euston. It is only a few stops between the Barbican and Euston and that journey is covered by multiple lines so you will get from the theatre back to your hotel in about 15 minutes

The Euston Premier Inn has so. E awful rooms right on the road. You literally have buses going past 2 feet away. Ask for a quiet room if you go there.

Try the Premier Inn at Farringdon. That's a really short walk from the Barbican.
