Would you buy this cake?

It's DDs birthday this week and she's obsessed with dogs - specifically Great Danes.

She requested a Great Dane shaped cake. This is entirely beyond me. I made her a dinosaur cake one year that looked like a green hedgehog.

For a school project last week she randomly decided to make a cake with a picture of a sunset on it and had great fun making a scene out of food colouring and icing sugar.

Which gave me idea - cake shaping is not my forte but I can draw a bit.

So I've just make this using black food dye (mostly), an eyeliner pencil and a toothpick.

It was a bit of an experiment but it's worked (this is not a stealth boast, I can draw but didn't know if I could drawn on royal icing - I'm genuinely pleased with it)

Some family members have suggested I market myself on local Facebook groups as a cake painter.

Would you buy this or similar (I can draw most things though best at animals) and what would you pay.

It took me about 3 hours but I'd maybe get quicker with better tools and practice.

I can't draw well enough to do pet portraits (and it's a crowded market) but it's struck me I might have found a niche where people are a little more forgiving of less than 100% accuracy.

So, should I market myself or just be content with a happy DD and kind family members.

It’s very good and if I bought cakes then I’d certainly think about paying for one like that. Confused about you using eyeliner on the cake though! Surely eyeliner is not edible.

OohKittens · 30/05/2021 10:57

That is fantastic

WannabePilot · 30/05/2021 10:58

It’s brilliant! And if you can do things like flowers or kids tv characters as well then yes, definitely think there’s a market. You’d need to be able to bake well too though, and do plain fondant icing I guess to then paint on top and look professional? And obvs not use eye liner!

I'd buy it if it had a Cavalier King Charles spaniel on it!

Amdone123 · 30/05/2021 10:59

It's a great idea, and I've certainly never seen anything like this. It looks great, you're very talented.
I adore my dog and if my husband bought me a cake with his face on, I would be overjoyed.
I'm unsure about what he'd pay though, or what I would as I don't really buy celebration cakes.

UnwantedOpinionBelow · 30/05/2021 10:59

Stunning, I would

newnortherner111 · 30/05/2021 11:01

Lovely cake, and the only reason I would not buy it is because I prefer cats.

CatsPyjama · 30/05/2021 11:01

It’s really good! Not sure about the eye liner...

Fitforforty · 30/05/2021 11:02

No I wouldn’t but it doesn’t mean others wouldn’t. I only buy from online sellers who have appropriate food hygiene certificates.

You need to be carefully about infringement of copyright.
hilarymantlepiece · 30/05/2021 11:03

Eye liner? Is that edible?

weaselwords · 30/05/2021 11:04

I think you are onto something! I would.

RedRec · 30/05/2021 11:04

Yes, would definitely buy it. You are very talented and it is a good business idea. Good luck x

CatsPyjama · 30/05/2021 11:05

You could make dog birthday cakes. With their face on it.

mayflower21 · 30/05/2021 11:08

I'd buy if it was vegan. With some book or cartoon character. I wouldn't like to have eyeliner on my cake. If I knew you used it- even if you told me it's edible I wouldn't buy it. I rarely use make up so don't use that often on my skin either

Babymamamama · 30/05/2021 11:09

It’s brilliant. I would buy it.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 30/05/2021 11:12

Looks good but I wouldn't want to cut into the dog's face - it seems sort of cruel! Sad

Sorry! Eyeliner brush! A new one that was entirely clean. And I used food dye not eyeliner.

Sorry eyeliner brush!!

It's food dye and 100% edible

Would you buy this cake?

WineAcademy · 30/05/2021 11:28

So you wouldn't be baking the cakes, just selling a cake topper essentially? I think it is an interesting idea, and possibly unique.

Beeeeeeeeeeeeeep · 30/05/2021 11:28

It's amazing!
Some people will definitely buy those. Did you buy the cake underneath?

Shannith · 30/05/2021 11:28

It's also vegan and my thought process was doing pictures of people's pets.

I like drawing animals. And I can bake well, so the underlying cakes would be tasty.

I'm pleased the general reception is that there is an idea there. It was a completely random set of circumstances that made me think of having a bash.

To reiterate -
I didn't use actual eyeliner. I'm not a savage.

DrFoxtrot · 30/05/2021 11:30

Yes OP, I would definitely buy one!

HeronLanyon · 30/05/2021 11:32

Great! Ea enough to get photo of pet pinged to you and away you go.
I can imagine them selling really well.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 30/05/2021 11:33

That's fab!
