in the local shop offering an ironing service . Only costs 50p per week, so I've started off with just one week, to see if I get any interest, if I only get one call (even if they decide they don't want to use my services) I'll pay to keep it up there for longer.

Browsed some of the other threads on ironing here on MN, and looked at the (very few) ads I could find for local people doing it and have set what I feel is quite reasonable prices.......even offering slightly lower prices for pensioners and people with disabilities.....

Now I just have to wait and see if there's any takers.

The ironing service I use charges by weight. They pick up and deliver unless I need stuff in a hurry and have missed theie day for my area.

I did ask them if my stuff was insured whilst it is with them though.

QueenOfQuotes · 04/08/2005 00:35

Yes I had thought of the insurance thing - hope it doesn't put people off too much me not having insurance for their stuff......but then hopefully they're also realise that if they want the security of insurance they'll have to pay more.

Do you think it will put a lot of people off???

I don't think it will put too many people off. Most ads I see do say something like fully insured. I did use the question to weed out the teenage girls and after I had used one service who sent my stuff back smelling of smoke.

lemonice · 04/08/2005 13:16

Can i just ask How do those steam iron presses work?

And QOQ how did your website advert thingy go?

QueenOfQuotes · 04/08/2005 13:32

Lemonic - I have no idea about those steam presses LOL

As for the website ad, we didn't get any sales, but quite a lot of interest. Sadly at the moment the retail sales are down (even with the big companies) so the chances of selling anything at the moment is slim.

bubblerock · 04/08/2005 13:39

Hi Lemonice, you just put the item in it and pull the top down onto it, it's light and easy to pull shut but creates a lot of pressure on the item once it's in there and presses both sides at once. small items are really quick and stuff like pillowcases take seconds to do. We do Duvets etc.. almost daily and it is easier. I hate ironing as I get leg ache but I don't mind using the press sat down watching tv (it will beep if you have an item in too long )

bubblerock · 04/08/2005 13:41

What website Ad QoQ?

lemonice · 04/08/2005 13:46

I've been meaning to ask you something Bubble rock but now can't remember what!!

I feel an empathy with you and QOQ as in similar position regarding income and business...

QOQ I would be tempted to get a press if you do get some ironing. I thought of doing it but dp was very unsupportive, so i've signed up for the AQA

bubblerock · 04/08/2005 13:49

I'm sure you wanted to ask if you could come and have a go on the steam press next Sunday after our 14 guests have gone home - No problem at all!!

Bloody AQA

lemonice · 04/08/2005 13:56

oops that was insensitive, forgot that you did try for that, never mind i did my trial on Saturday and in 12 hours I earned 7.00!!

bubblerock · 04/08/2005 14:02

It was my stupid fault for not reading the instructions properly - doh! I signed up for some of those consumer survey sites and have earnt a couple of quid on those, one day I will make my millions

bubblerock · 04/08/2005 14:10

QoQ I forgot to say - we use the big blue bags that you get in Ikea for our laundry. They are really srong and don't take up space like baskets do when they are empty.

QueenOfQuotes · 04/08/2005 14:28

bubble - DH and are have recently set up a company importing african furniture and furnishings (accessories) into the UK - it's still only online, and not doing very much at the moment and we did a 1 month ad campaign on Premier Christian Radio.

OP posts:
bubblerock · 04/08/2005 14:31

That sounds great QoQ - quite ambitious though, hows it going? Can you link it for me?

QueenOfQuotes · 04/08/2005 14:34

it's here

Still pretty quiet - we only started trading in May, and at the moment don't have any stock here in the UK - which means that the delivery costs are still pretty high (we would love to 'subsidise' them but simply can't afford to at the moment).

We did sell a complete garden furniture set a few weeks back, but are still waiting for the next elusive sale. Of course current retail trends aren't helping, so for the time being it's being put slightly on the 'back burner' while DH finds a paying job to pay the bills.

OP posts:
bubblerock · 04/08/2005 14:43

What a fantastic site - very easy to navigate and very professional. Beautiful items too, unfortunately out of my price range I like the ostrich egg design! Hopefully things will pick up, I can imagine it would take quite a bit of capital to bring a load of stock to the UK.

QueenOfQuotes · 04/08/2005 14:47

Thankyou bubble - yes we love a lot of the stuff we're selling too - but as DH keeps telling me - I'll have to sell a lot of stuff before we can buy any for ourselves - even though we would only pay the 'trade' price - no point in charging ourselves extra to make profit LOL

Yes the capital required is quite a lot. Although we're hoping that once DH has got a job we'll slowly bring in some of the smaller items (prints and accessories) and keep them at home, thus being able to reduce the prices - as we'd go right up to the weight limits therefore getting the 'most' for our money.

OP posts:
bubblerock · 04/08/2005 14:56

It's horrible having to work for someone else when you want to spend time on your own business isn't it? DH will have to go to work in the winter as we wont have made enough money to keep us going out of season, he'll only do part time though to keep us fed

QueenOfQuotes · 04/08/2005 20:41

bubble - where is your hotel (it is a hotel isn't it )?

OP posts:
bubblerock · 04/08/2005 20:53

We are in Blackpool, a very low risk venture though, we bought it with my Mum and don't have a mortgage so as long as we cover household bills each month we still have a roof over our heads. There's only really a 6 month window of opportunity to make money though.

We'll stay here for a few years and build up the business then sell it for a profit and hopefully move abroad somewhere - that's the plan anyway
