Suggestions for cover up pregnancy interview outfit anyone?

WideWebWitch · 12/05/2003 12:24

I've got an interview soon at 13 weeks pregnant and can't think what to wear to cover it up, any bright ideas? If I get the job I'll admit to being pregnant and see what they say but in the meantime where should I go for a good but not too expensive suit? Nothing in my wardrobe fits anymore - TIA for any ideas.

Depressing as it is, you have to wear something that just makes you look fat instead of pregnant. I would advise something with gathers at the front. ugh.

You may well not look pregnant to anyone who doesn't know you. I remember that it seemed bleeding obvious to me when I was pregnant but no one else noticed!

Why not wear one of your existing suits, buy a longer top/shirt that covers up the waistband and zip and then use an elastic band or a piece of elastic, loop it throught the button hole and then back round on itself so it is fastened and then over your button. I did this for quite a while and it worked fine.

tigermoth · 13/05/2003 00:15

good luck with the interview www. I am just wondering if proper suit is necessary? Could you possibly get away with wearing an unbuttoned shirt dress with a plain and formal top and trousers underneath? Quite loose fitting and concealing, but still smart. I have a black shirt dress that is standard interview attire for me. Mine was from hennes but I know La Redout (sp) feature lots of shirt dresses in their catalogue.

scoobysnax · 13/05/2003 08:40

Wearing a colourful scarf will focus attention away from the bump - I agree with the just looking fat approach! Don't wear any top that tucks in.

A dress with a scarf might work well, and a normal jacket left open...

What tye of job is it for?

Thanks for the advice everyone. I've just found a Fenn Wright Manson suit (size 14) in my wardrobe that I can get into provided I don't do up the skirt or jacket. It's pale green (sort of dull mint, not bright green, actually it's the sort of internet explorer background colour but a little bit greener - you get the idea) linen though so I'm not sure it's smart enough plus I'd feel slimmer in black. What do people think about linen? It creases but everyone knows that but I still don't know if I think it's smart enough. I've got a black jacket and trousers that don't match but are flattering but the trousers would have to be under my bump so I'd have to find a very good top. Aaaggh! I really don't want to spend any money if possible. The job is quite senior so it is best to be as formally dressed as pos at the interview I think. Tigermoth I do have 2 x shift dress/matching long jacket combos but I can't even get the dresses over my hips (size 12s). eeek. Thanks for all the advice. Determined to find something in my wardrobe without spending money...

www, just a sneaky thought - if really stuck, could you buy something from Marks and Spencer, wear it for the interview then return it to the shop afterwards and get your money back?

Hope the anti-eating-grapes-in-supermarket brigade don't spot this!

tigermoth · 13/05/2003 10:04

ps, www, just to clear things up, I didn't mean shift dresses (not kind to pregnant women) but shirt dresses (that you leave unbuttoned and then wear something underneath).

sis · 13/05/2003 13:55

WWW, I'm sorry that I can't help with your problem but I just wanted to wish you luck for the interview. Hope the clothing dilemma is sorrted out soon too!

meanmum · 13/05/2003 14:10

I've got loads you can borrow. I'm big anyway so my suits would fit you without even having to contemplate maternity wear.

Personally for interviews I always like people to look very smart, even if the company has a very casual dress code. It shows they have made an effort and are wanting to put in an effort to get the job. Kind of warped thinking now that I write it down but I know that is what others want as well.

So my only advice is go with what you were thinking initially which is formal. Try to tuck clothing in where you can as even if you look pregnant to yourself you probably won't to others.

CAM · 13/05/2003 17:28

ooh tigermoth I'm going to report you to the supermarket thread!

WideWebWitch · 13/05/2003 20:27

I'm going to go for a dark and formal suit. Thanks for all the advice and tigermoth, I'm off to look around M&S tomorrow. Make of that what you will

good luck with the interview, www!

ooh Batters now I'm really shocked!!

Mum2Toby · 14/05/2003 08:53

My friend makes a living out of buying goods..... wearing them, then damaging them and taking them back as faulty goods!! Must point out that I don't condone this.
She is the QUEEN of discounts. And she does an insurance job on her house once a year or, and I quote "It's not worth paying your house insurance".

She's had a 3 piece suite and her living room redecorated so far! Her next mission is the carpets.

I'll just stand back now and wait for the gasps of horror.

Mum2Toby · 14/05/2003 08:53

Good luck WWW.

TheOldDragon · 14/05/2003 08:58

M2T, it's people like that who ruined my profit sharing (and pay rises) when I worked for an insurance company!! You can argue that stealing grapes doesn't harm anyone but fraudulent insurance claims do.

Grrrrr!

SoupDragon · 14/05/2003 08:58

(and good luck WWW!)

Mum2Toby · 14/05/2003 09:01

OldDragon - who are you? Anyone sussed you out yet?
I know, it's awful!!! But she gets away with every time. She's been trying to convince me to do it. My TV has just stopped working and she's told me to throw coffee or juice down the back of it and claim accidental damage. I'm not going to for many reasons.... one of them being I'd be scared I got caught out!!

Mum2Toby · 14/05/2003 09:02

AAAAH You're Soup Dragon!! How slow am I???!?

TheOldDragon · 14/05/2003 09:03

No, no one's guessed! I'm both reassured that I'm not that obvious when using anonymous names and a bit disappointed

SoupDragon · 14/05/2003 09:04

See! I thought it was obvious!!
