But I am just not going to be able to get one.

I have very difficult and fussy specific requiremnts it has to fill.

I do not want to have to use any childcare. The main reason for that being that whatever small amount I earn will be spent on childcare.

So that leaves a job that I could do with the kids . CM/nanny come to mind . I've done that and need a change. I am qualified in both. NNEB etc. But can't imagine getting a nanny job where I can fit in ds's nursery collections and also dd's school run ( unless I nannyed for a family with same age kids at same school, not likely)

Or another idea I had was to get a job mornings only whilst ds was at nursery. BUT the gap of time is just so small. I dont have anybody who could look after him for me after nursery.

I thought of being a dinner lady but you need to work till 1 ish and nursery goes on till 12.30 at the latest (thats with paying for an extra hour)

Then I thought about evening work Really dont want to miss putting the kids to bed. But we are soooo OD.
So,I came up with care assistant. Apparantly you dont need qualifications. Is this right? A friend works 4 till 9 which could be do-able . I would have to sort something out for dc's untill dh is home. He would be back just too late for me to be on time.

Could I do this do you think?

Aaaarrrggghh if only we were rich! lol

Cleaning? Okay it's not that glamourous, but it is reasonably well paid and you could do it in the mornings whilst your DS is at nursery.

FeelingLucky · 16/12/2008 13:37

Cleaning in the morning.
Babysitting / bar work in evening if you can't get any care assistant work

ideas · 16/12/2008 13:37

That what dh said.

I am rubbish at cleaning! I only do my house when dh can't!!

hmmm

Supermarkets & call centres do various flexible hours to work around childcare IIRC

What about part time TA?

VinoEsmeralda · 16/12/2008 13:37

Teaching assistant?

MadreInglese · 16/12/2008 13:38

that's Teaching Assistant, not Territorial Army

sazzerbear · 16/12/2008 13:39

I'm sure cleaning would be more enjoyable when getting paid for it!!

MrsMattie · 16/12/2008 13:39

Care assistant is an idea, but they might have specific requirements for the hours they need you to do, rather than being flexible and fitting in around you - worth a shot, though

What about going self employed (any bright ideas? )... or taking on a 'franchise' job that you can fit around kids - like selling Usborne books or similar?

ideas · 16/12/2008 13:39

Called our local supermarket where I used to work(as a teenager) and they have no vacencies.

Also tried Matalan. Again no jobs . Also shifts were 9-1 12-5 or 1-4. all no good

grrgh

TA I think would be ok if the hours matched. Aren't those jobs very hard to come by?

I may ask our head today.

chambermaid in a hotel?

dog walking

waitress in a bar/ restaurant (shifts usually start at 6 or 7pm, so you could still be around for dinner and DH put DCs to bed)

you quite often get call centre jobs which do the 4-9 shift

Something like this
www.usbornebooksathome.co.uk/.
I have not done it personally so dont know much about it. But was speaking to someone recently who said they earned alot from it, she goets most of her business from visiting toddler and speech therapy/health visitor clinics

orangehead · 16/12/2008 13:44

Sorry should of read first meant 'gets' not 'goets' and 'toddler groups'

MadreInglese · 16/12/2008 13:47

What about evening babysitting? You could charge a decent amount if you are registered CM, but might not be regular work.

My mum used to work from home packing cards for a local company, wasn't fab £££ but could be done while watching her soaps!

Or what about asking local employment agencies if they have flexible PT vacancies?

bigspender30 · 16/12/2008 14:49

Why not register with some nanny agenices to do babysitting as previous post suggested? Or try looking on workingmums for home based work?

pinkdelight · 18/12/2008 08:42

I know some mums like you, with childcare qualifications and young dcs, work in the creche at our gym as the hours are 9-12 and they do shifts across seven days a week. Worth checking if there's something similar near you. Some of them also do babysitting for creche clients to top up their wages, which may fit in with you when your dh gets home. Cleaning is also worth a try - totally different when it's a job, just stick some music on and think of the money! Hope you find something.

twentypence · 18/12/2008 08:48

Looking after children after school?

nannyeggnogg · 18/12/2008 08:56

I second the franchise type stuff - Avon, Ann Summers (shudder), Body Shop parties etc.

Or mystery shopping?

Have a look here for tips and links and especially ways to avoid scams and getting ripped off.

Going to have a look myself too..

ruddynorah · 18/12/2008 09:04

i have loads of mums working for me at m&s. 3 night a week, 6pm til 11pm. no childcare issues, still can put kids to bed 4 nights a week, plenty options for overtime. is there a big m&s near you? our is open til 9pm.

mazzystartled · 18/12/2008 09:07

would you consider putting your ds into nursery for 2 sessions on 2 days instead of 1 session per day?

that way you would have 5 or 6 clear hours and more flexibility.

bar work? waitressing? supermarket evening shift? library - evening and weekend shifts [that is my fantasy job] look on the local council's website they might have similar stuff on casual basis too.

i have friends who are care assistants and they work changing shifts but you might find somewhere that can work around your availability.

ideas · 18/12/2008 13:45

Hello everyone

Sorry I didn't get back here the other day.

Fab ideas from all of you.

I can't change the nursery sessions. It is a nursery school. And we are allocated mornings. plus ds couldn't cope with a full day.

There is a large M and S quite close, but I wouldn't be able to be there for 9am. Unless I sorted something out....and then I couldn't take ds to nursery but I dont really have a choice.

Cleaning - I really am rubbish. Not organised enough. All the clients would complain that I'd done a rubbish job.

I would like a teaching assistants job, have emailed the local schools. So we'll see.

My friend hasn't got back to me re the care assistants job yet. Not that there is a job, it was just an idea.

franchise hmm it's good in theory but there is loads of that round here already. Lots of my friends do regular Virgin vie, Jewellery, Mini IQ, Usbourne, Pampered chef parties. Don't think there is any call for anything else.

I thought of the creche in a gym etc. idea myself. I will call some local ones this afternoon.

children after school is sort of what I do now and I would like to get away from that.

babysitting fills me with dread. But if I have to do that I would.

Sane with bar work. I'd be nervous and would hate it.

Gosh I am so not helping myself !!! I really cant afford to be so fussy.

The ones I wouldn't mind would be

M and S, Waitrose in the morns
Care assistant in the mornings
Library " " " "
Creche " " " "
Teaching assistant

Thanks guys.

i was meaning m&s in the evening. if it's a big store it'll probably open late, then they'll be filling the racks and shelves. worth a try. and you'll get discount

ideas · 18/12/2008 13:49

Oh yes, sorry I see that now.

Yep a 6 pm start would be better for dh getting home
