so I did not get another job today and I am wondering if I need to change direction

I have no idea what to do

what if I retrained for something; would it bankrupt me? I need to earn money

I have done all sorts of bits of freelance fundraising/ marketing/ arts work/ copywriting recently and I feel like a pinball in a machine; I can't seem to get a permanent post

have lots of teacher friends

listen to their stories and work chat

no interest

it is irritating

I mean it is irritating that I have no interest

my friends are not irritating at all

onebat it's not the confidence I lack, it's the opportunities. A couple of jobs have been filled recently leaving no real outlets.

you are like my mother when I was 16

"work in a bank"

"no I don't want to"

"work in another area of banking"

I am in the same boat. I have been doing a post grad course since having children. We've recently moved to a town where the type of employers for this type of work are more scarce. I am soooo ready to go back to work. I didn't even get an interview for a job I am overqualified for and it has left me demoralised and wondering what on earth my plan B could be.

I feel for you.

have you got any national trust places near you

i keep trying their jobs but no luck so far

GrapefruitMoon · 07/10/2008 17:00

My problem is that I don't really want to work full-time which rules out my previous career.... and I am probably over-qualified for anything part-time that comes along. (I don't mind that btw but employers seem to...) Plus there are hundreds of applicants for the part-time jobs.

Blackduck · 07/10/2008 18:15

Agree Cap - you can't go into teaching just because the holidays fit with children! (I know I am an ex-teacher) - it really isn't that easy! Thou' have seriously thought about going back and re-training (was a secondary teacher - may be I could do the little ones.... - on the other hand may be not...)

Cappuccino · 07/10/2008 21:10

no blackduck it looks like blardy hard work

Ladies, ladies. If you are going back to work post children you must apply for jobs that you don't really want. You always get those jobs even if you suck your teeth at the interview. From there you shape your job and change it into something you do like because it's impossible to suppress your particular flair for whatever it is you are good at. Job titles are rigid and misleading.

Cappy - where do you live (roughly)?

Cappuccino · 08/10/2008 09:35

North Lancs

oh and Swedes I am such a dogooder

I will doggedly do whatever shite I am given

I think perhaps this is one of my problems

A suggestion. A new government initiative means that GPs' pay will be cut by a substantial amount (I think it's 20 or 25%) if they receive negative feedback from Gov random patient surveys. A common complaint is that communication is poor. Could you contact large GP group practises in the area and offer to write a Newsletter quarterly or every six months (showing all the dates of the various clinics and contact numbers and meet your doctor type articles etc).

Swedes · 08/10/2008 09:49

You would probably be able to pick up some advertising which might offset the cost of them hiring you.

Blackduck · 08/10/2008 09:57

God Cap you sound like me....I take a job dutifully accept all the shte until one day I explode! I am SO pssed off with being treated like cr*p! Sorry Swede, I can't just do anything it does my head in

Swedes · 08/10/2008 10:28

I wasn't suggesting that Cap takes a job where she is treated like shit or a shitty job in fact. Journalism jobs are often shitty and poorly paid.

zippitippitoes · 08/10/2008 10:42

swedes you are a lateral thinker

my bf keeps making suggestions to me along those lines

being proactive look at my skills and offer them to people

i never do this

do you honestly think you can do that kind of job creation?

Cappuccino · 08/10/2008 11:35

okay

swedes is now my new life coach

no zippi I always think "That can't work"

dh has ideas too but they always sound like insanity to me

however I'm sure he could have them going by the end of the month

I once filled in one of those personality form things which said I was a pragmatist

there were all sorts of positive things about pragmatists but what it came down to was I was constantly saying 'Oh no that will never work'

Cappuccino · 08/10/2008 11:36

What about charity fundraising? Lots of part-time jobs. We can never find anyone to fill fundraising roles. Doesn't pay much - 21-26k here in the sticks - but there does seem to be a shortage of people with the right skills. (i.e. basically being Clever and Nice)

ahundredtimes · 08/10/2008 11:45

OMG. My admiration for Swedes grows on a daily basis.
