I have been S/E for 5 yrs plus & I now have a temp job.....so how do I cope?

What mustn't I do?

tbh I really can't remember what it was like

I will be too bossy I just know it

cheap as in one the the pack of 12 from the supermarket that the children eat with as opposed to a nice one which matches the lovely 1980's cutlery that DH brought with him when we got married

don't take your own mug at first

assess the tea/coffee situation

sometimes they have those crappy machines that dispense in plastic cups

if it's a make your own type set up, they might provide cups/mugs

There are a few people in our office who like certain of the provided mugs (so there's someone who always wants the yellow one and another one who will only have one with a white inside) -

remember, the best part of your job will be deciding who is a lunatic and who isn't and who is shagging who etc.

Figment · 29/08/2008 14:43

I never poo at work.

Never, ever, ever.

Figment · 29/08/2008 14:43

Sorry I kinda forgot what the thraed was about......

What happended to your Nursery or I am getting confused again......???

KatyMac · 29/08/2008 14:56

But what if day 1 there is no mug?

If it' a machine I won't be drinking it tbh

I will be the lunatic

No bank will lend me money to open the nursery (would have lent me £220K - 9m ago but won't lend £50K now due to the 'current economic climate')

I think if a temp on day 1 turned up with a mug I'd probably think she was a bit control freaky. On day 2, it looks like you considered the situation and then brought one in iyswim.

Figment · 29/08/2008 15:07

There will be a mug. I am sure of it.

What kind of work is it?

KatyMac · 29/08/2008 15:07

Oh

P/T Temping at the council

Cash Office

Crap money

OP posts:
oi · 29/08/2008 15:23

it'll be fun, think of it like that. And it's temporary.

Good thing about council work is that if you get on ok (and I'm sure you will - control freaky people are JUST what they need in cash offices, trust me ), you will get called from them again when they need people.

KatyMac · 29/08/2008 16:18

hmm that may not be a good thing - this is just to dig me out of a short-term hole

OP posts:
KatyMac · 01/09/2008 21:24

Reassure me

Please reassure me

Janni · 01/09/2008 21:27

LOL at 'do not ask can I poo?'

That would be the LAST thing on my mind were I to return to work any day soon.

KatyMac · 01/09/2008 21:30

Did NOT think about putting this in 'Going back to work' topic - which is very dim of me really

Don't be rude to customers and then pretend you were talking to a fly.

zippitippitoes · 01/09/2008 21:32

lol

i hope you enjoy it katy

how did the test with the agency go

you were a lot quicker than me at getting a job

KatyMac · 01/09/2008 21:32

I'll try not to

I guess not recruiting children to childmind would be a big one too?

OP posts:
KatyMac · 01/09/2008 21:33

No test
Part-time
Crap money

Interviewer was very concerned that I could be assertive.....I think this is a very very bad sign

how many floors are there where you are working? if you need to poo, nip onto another floor

speaking as a team leader... turn up on time or communicate if there is an issue. Smile. Listen. Offer to fetch tea if nipping to get your own. Scan the office, if things are put away (clear desk policy etc) then keep area neat and tidy. I loath having to tidy away from my staff!!

overthemill · 01/09/2008 21:38

if working in council, bring your own mug. there may be a tea club for you to join or bring in own tea bags.

someone will always be sleeping with the boss/be their sister etc so never ever gossip with anyone.

be nice to all of them. offer to do things for people (not creepily) and they will love you.

wierd cliquey culture v often but generally pleasant good luck

KatyMac · 01/09/2008 21:40

See it wasn't that daft an idea to bring my own mug

I am absolutely terrified tbh - I know we are all joking. But I have been bullied at work before & I am scared

I'm not the person I was then - but I feel all defensive and edgy

OP posts:
ElfOnTheTopShelf · 01/09/2008 21:43

You will be fine

overthemill · 01/09/2008 21:48

i am sure you will be ok. you sound very nice to me

and btw councils do have millions of roles inc project management etc and offer training to staff which is excellent. think of this a real opportunity to research what roles they have and see if a job in the public sector might suit you. i know someone who went from a role in a council as temp admin officer and now works in the cabinet office in very senior role!

KatyMac · 01/09/2008 21:48

Thanks

I really hope so

OP posts:
KatyMac · 02/09/2008 15:29

I survived......just

No major faux pas (that I know about) but it would have helped if I hadn't kept yawning through my training

I am SO not used to being indoors all the time
