i am living on borowed money

i just cant see me geting a job

i just had my first interview for two years

i am crap at interviews and i did try

i just dont have suitable experience and wherever i look at whatever level i can see that i wont get the jobs because there will always be someone who is better

if i apply for low paid jobs i hear nothing because no one wants me

if i apply for better jobs then i either hear nothing or 3 times in two years i have had interviews and the in terviewers have basically just been mistaken when they asked me and i have been crap

im in warwickshire but i am prepared to move..the job interview i had was in surrey

it was this

very hard to find anything similar

i had a shop and a retail website

i loads of useless arty qualifications including an english degree a poce from 1081 so useless and art foundation and che in finart from the mid noneties and i have just done an nc in horticulture

i am trying to motivate myself to apply for a facilities manager job in central london, an assistant to events fund raiser and a job with the charity commission the latter is highly unlikely but it doesnt seem to make much odds to be honest

Laugs · 05/08/2008 11:34

Yes, I have an english degree too. Not much use.

So you'd really liketo work in horticulture?

ScottishMummy · 05/08/2008 11:35

occupational therapy assistant in mental health?they co facilitate art groups etc

zippitippitoes · 05/08/2008 11:35

the problem withjobs now is that everything is very tight and focussed and my cv idsnt

i have tried leaving things off it and still no luck

i know what you mean about trying for certain jobs thsat would be fine if i had any specific skills to offer but i dont

and my pc skills are all random self taught need to know stuff

i do have to rewrite my applications every time because i jsut have such an odd cv and employers dont like odd they like ticking boxes

and they like you to have worked in teams and had a line of command etc

OP posts:
Laugs · 05/08/2008 11:37

Could you get a job in a garden centre and work up from there (also using retail skills)? Is this too lowly paid?

objectivity · 05/08/2008 11:39

So what about positions in galleries, or teaching assistant positions?

Could you set up in business again at all? If a different field?

Do you prefer to be in a office situ.ormore independent?Like working with kids?

ScottishMummy · 05/08/2008 11:39

woah!stop this constant self berating.it will not propel you to employment will it

applying is about a bit of quiet confidence, i can do this

consider any entry level post to get started
voluntary
Job centre classes

But you run your own business didn't you? That is a skill in itself. Is there an area you enjoyed from it that you could concentrate on eg admin (PA), telephone (switchboard), Tax Returns (Accountancy), sales (Customer Service)? The fact that it failed should not be even on the radar in your mind - lots of people fail (thousands and thousands) but you should always be able to learn from an experience.

I am one of those people you hate, always get the first job I interview for but I have faith in myself and believe that each corner we turn in life brings a new experience. Never regret mistakes, learn from them. Believe in yourself and you will get the next job you go for. My df did this and, after 18 years of SAHM to 6 LOs got the 1st job she went for and loves it to bits.

Get out of bed now, tomorrow is the start of a new positive thinking Zippi. Be prepared for a lot of hard work, jobs do not just land in your plate, you have to do a lot of work to prepare (at least 2 days) for each interview but think of this not as wasted time but learning time to lead you to that job.. Good luck.

zippitioes, I do see what you're saying about employers wanting to tick boxes.

I found that smaller businesses are less like this. They don't have to answer to an HR dept or employment policy, they just employ people they like and think are competent.

In a small bus. there's also less hierarchy and need for line management experience.

Why not try sending out on spec letters to small businesses you like the sound of. They might prefer to employ this way if they can't afford to advertise for jobs.

WideWebWitch · 05/08/2008 11:45

I'm sorry about the job, I thought you had a good chance.

overthemill · 05/08/2008 11:45

zippi you got an interview with a highly respected charity. you got the interview on merit. they didnt choose you: find out why

they will tell you - usually offer it

then use that info to target next interview
treat it as applying for an interview

I am 50 and very highly regarded in my fiedl and cant even get an interview after years of freelancing (feedback: not sure i will fit into a permanent role again). So i have to concentrate on making them realise i am a good bet

happy to pair up with you and bolster each other up

MrsRecycle · 05/08/2008 11:46

Gosh a lot of postings - had a look at the jobs you are going for. Can I be honest and say that you are never likely to get a managment role without previous experience in the industry. This is where you are going wrong, you need to work out what industry you want to be in and focus your efforts (changing your CV to match role, etc) in this specific industry. To be a Facilities Manager, you need to have previous experience and, sometimes, qualifications.

How about Retail? Do you like this area?

Personally, I wouldn't go into the charities Industry but you may enjoy this.

zippitippitoes · 05/08/2008 11:48

id have to mug up on royal residences

MrsRecycle · 05/08/2008 11:48

wow and you got an interview - congratulations, the next step will be a job. See you can do it.

giraffescantdancethetango · 05/08/2008 11:49

would you consider joining a temping agency? or would that be a childcare nightmare?

if you can afford to for a few months then voluntary work is great, gives you experience and references. i would have gotten no where today if it hadnt been for voluntary work filling in the gaps i had. plus it shows willing. doesnt even have to be much.

Laugs · 05/08/2008 11:51

I know exactly how you feel. Each time you go through an application process you get yourself revved up for it, but each time you don't get the job it knocks you back down.

I think that's normal actually. Don't beat yourself up about it. Sometimes it is worth the 'down' periods as this is when you can reflect and reassess.

But of course you have a great deal of skills and you will find a job.

zippitippitoes · 05/08/2008 11:52

the feedback from that interview was i was a strong candidate and it was a difficult decision and they liked my cv

but then they qarent going to say anything else really and kick you when they just rejected yoiu

yes i agree this is my problem

no one wants me as an admin asistyant because i have too many qualifications and i am not a fast typist hahaha or any of the pc skills required

and i agree no one wants me to manage anything either

I worked for Barnardo's for several years and was largely employed for my artistic abilities initially, although I did also have a teaching qualification and expereince working with children....as you do (your own!)

Have a look at their vacancies list - there are usually lots of jobs there that require creative talent because they have a role in getting parents to play together/use art and play therapy, etc.

overthemill · 05/08/2008 11:55

zippi - that feedback is good - now go and ask them why the person they chose was stronger

you can do this type of role, inetrviewers dont just call people in to make up the numbers. everyone they interview coudl do the job. the interview helps them choose which one

overthemill · 05/08/2008 11:56

oh and i'd avoid moving to london - v expensive and you'd need new networks. do one big thing at a time

zippitippitoes · 05/08/2008 11:56

i do have to work really hard to sound employable and i do put loads of effort in

it just gets you down

i know how hard it is for me to get an interview

my last one before this was for an asylum case worker for the civil service and that involved all this online testing

i got through that

but didnt get throught the assessment centre which was really hard day and they basically picked me up hard on teams in the interview
