How long should you stay in a new job before leaving?

What’s the consensus of the minimum amount of time you have to put into a new job before moving to not look flakey to future employers. A year? (Please no!) 6 months?

signed a woman who joined a new terrible company a month ago and has been crying in her car pretty much daily for the past two weeks before heading home.

I don't think it is a problem having a short-term job on your cv. You write down that the role itself turned out to be entirely different from what was advertised.

Less is better if the question is about looking flakey.
recognising it’s the wrong place and getting out is honest and respectable

Exactly. I'd respect a candidate for this (assuming their CV otherwise looked normal)

It’s fine to leave quickly and say in interview the job wasn’t as described or the culture wasn’t the right fit. As a one-off you will get away with this. If you have a string of them that might raise eyebrows. Or just leave it off your CV if you aren’t there long.

I had this once. Knew within the first 6 weeks I’d made a terrible mistake. My boss was a narcissistic bully. I stayed for 3 years and was a wreck when I left and my self confidence took a battering. Would never do that again or recommend anyone else do. Ironically I had a few sessions with a coach (at my own expense) right at the beginning and her advice was to leave immediately and I ignored it but she was absolutely right in hindsight.

ASAP. The earlier you do it the better.
